Villain Overview

The question isn't what Maria would have wanted... it's "what do they deserve"? Remember what she meant to us. Remember what they took from us.
~ Gerald disregarding Maria's wishes as he manipulates Shadow.

Oh, Ivo... you're no Maria. The moment I lost her, my family was gone forever! The only way to give Maria's life meaning is to destroy the world that took her from me, so I'm BURNING IT ALL DOWN!
~ Gerald’s most famous quote, revealing his true plan to destroy Earth to Dr. Eggman, also revealing he never cared for the latter, prompting Dr. Eggman to turn against him.

Professor Gerald Robotnik is the main antagonist of the 2024 film, Sonic the Hedgehog 3, the third installment of Paramount Pictures' Sonic Cinematic Universe.

He is a brilliant scientist and the grandfather of Dr. Ivo Robotnik and the late Maria Robotnik, who had worked at G.U.N. 50 years ago, studying Project Shadow, hoping that he would be a great achievement in the future. However, after G.U.N. issued a warrant for his arrest for his shady practices, Gerald tried to escape with Shadow and Maria, but the latter ended up being killed in an explosion caused by a G.U.N. corporal who was firing at a tank that was filled with Shadow's chaos energy.

Filled with vengeance and grief of Maria's death, Gerald designed the Eclipse Cannon with the sole intent of wiping out all of humanity in a twisted desire to avenge his granddaughter's death. He would eventually get freed from his prison and free Shadow from his stasis, recruiting him, Ivo, and the latter's right-hand man, Agent Stone, in his quest of destroying the world. But when he reveals his plan to his grandson, he betrays him, so that he can stop him from destroying the world.

Gerald also serves the arch-nemesis of G.U.N., as well as the arch-nemesis of both Shadow, the latter who was his former right-hand and adoptive son, and his grandson and former protégé, Ivo Robotnik.

He was portrayed by Jim Carrey, who also played his grandson in the same film series, as well as the titular character in The Mask, the Riddler in Batman Forever, the titular character in The Cable Guy, Hank Evans in Me, Myself, & Irene, the Grinch in Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Count Olaf in Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events, Walter Sparrow in The Number 23, and Steve Gray in The Incredible Burt Wonderstone.

Appearance[]

Dr. Eggman: You do look like me but fatter and older and there's that funny smell. But the resemblance is uncanny. It's as if…
Dr. Eggman and Gerald: [breaking the fourth wall] We're two characters in a movie being played by the same actor!
~ Dr. Eggman to Gerald about their resemblance

Gerald is an elderly man who bears a striking resemblance to his grandson, Ivo. He appears to be slightly larger than Ivo, and he's completely bald, just like him. His mustache is entirely white, comically large, and pointed at both ends. He always dresses in white and wears a pair of glasses.

After obtaining the keys to activate the Eclipse Cannon, Gerald changes into a big white zip-up jacket with two white lines and black accents, wrapped around his waist and connected by four detailed golden ingot-like parallelogram-shaped buttons, with an additional four on the back. The coat features a highly detailed giant golden circle on each side at the front of the waist, surrounded by circuit board patterns. Underneath, he wears a black top, with silver zip-like lines running down the sides of the shoulders, also adorned with circuit board patterns. The collar of his coat has black ridges on the inside, and two white lines run down the back of his shoulders, connected by red buckles in the chest area, once again surrounded by circuit board patterns. He also receives new gloves, which are black and connected to black gauntlets with silver and gold fingertips.

Personality[]

Gerald is a rather intelligent scientist, being very calculated with his scheme and planning out everything ahead of time. At first, he appears to be a rather calm individual. However, he appears to be just as callous, arrogant, and eccentric as his grandson was in the first two films. When Gerald is introduced, it seems that his plan is just to simply destroy the G.U.N. base, using the Eclipse Cannon that he once designed for them. If anything seems clear, it's that Gerald is infuriated at G.U.N. for killing Maria and locking him away for 50 years, and that the imprisonment has completely warped his mind.

He initially appeared to form a bond with Ivo being happy to see him and try to connect with him on their numerous similarities. After reuniting with him, he spends quality time with him in a virtual reality world to just simply fulfill Ivo's dream of actually having a family that cares about him and the childhood memories that he never experienced. However, things do seem to be a bit off, as Gerald gets angry with his grandson for making a fool of himself in the G.U.N. base, briefly mentioning that he would've "gutted him like a pheasant" if he wasn't family, before immediately moving on.

Despite all of this, it becomes apparent that Gerald is a broken man who is unable to come to terms with his granddaughter's death, even after 50 years of imprisonment. He reveals that he actually intends to use the Eclipse Cannon to not just destroy the G.U.N. base, but also all life on the planet, including himself due to his misery. He eventually mentions to Ivo that "he's no Maria", despite how much Ivo resembles him physically and intellectually, showing both how little Gerald actually cared about him in the end. Ultimately, unlike Shadow, Gerald's pain of losing his granddaughter would completely consume him into becoming a monster and going as far as disregarding his only remaining relative who is a perfect mirror of himself.

Biography[]

Past[]

Gerald Robotnik was born in 1914. Gerald worked with the military organization that would eventually be known as G.U.N. over 50 years ago, working in one of their labs in Japan. Upon G.U.N. personnel finding Shadow in a meteorite, they took him over to Gerald's lab, where Gerald created a program called Project Shadow, which involves studying and utilizing Shadow's Chaos Energy powers in hopes of benefiting humanity. Gerald also had at least two children, as he had a granddaughter named Maria and a grandson named Ivo. And even though he never met Ivo, Gerald is incredibly close to Maria, allowing her move in with him there and even form a genuine friendship with Shadow.

However, G.U.N. became too concerned of Gerald's questionable practices with Shadow's powers. And then, they decided to shut down Project Shadow by issuing a warrant for Gerald's arrest. In a panic, Gerald attempted to flee the lab with Shadow and Maria, but the G.U.N. soldiers were in pursuit. One soldier aimed a firearm at them. But then, Captain Walters, the future leader of G.U.N., intervened, not wanting Maria and Shadow to get hurt, due to them being just children. And then, he tried to wrestle the gun away just as it fired. Unfortunately, the shot struck a glass tank containing some of Shadow's Chaos Energy, resulting in an explosion that kills several people, including Maria. Heartbroken, Gerald and Shadow rushed over to her body, devastated by her loss and angry at Walters and the other G.U.N. soldiers.

Following Maria's death, Shadow was sealed away while Gerald was arrested, taking one of Shadow's quills with him. Confined in a private facility, G.U.N. struck a deal with the professor. In exchange for his freedom, Gerald would construct the most powerful weapon in existence. Gerald agreed to this deal and created designs for an orbital super laser known as the Eclipse Cannon. He then got sentenced to 50 years in prison. Unbeknownst to them, Gerald was also planning his revenge against G.U.N. and the rest of humanity for the tragic death of his beloved granddaughter.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (2024)[]

In 2024, 50 years after the death of Maria, Gerald was finally released from prison at the age of 110. Upon his release, he used his genius intellect to hack into his grandson's Badniks and free Shadow. This action drew the attention of G.U.N, prompting them to send Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles to prevent Shadow from causing destruction in Tokyo.

After Team Sonic unfortunately failed to defeat Shadow, Tails announced an idea to stop at a restaurant called Chao Garden, where the Chao were the main focus. There, they came across Commander Walters, who reveals to the trio about the origin of Shadow. However, Ivo's Badniks had arrived, and they shot everywhere through the restaurant. Thankfully, they were each turned off by Dr. Eggman's henchman, Agent Stone. But while Team Sonic and Agent Stone survived, Commander Walters was badly injured. Just before dying, he gave Sonic a key to activate the Eclipse Cannon.

In order to show less confusion, Agent Stone brought Team Sonic to Ivo's base, revealing him to still be alive after the events of the previous film, much to their shock. From that moment, Ivo was able to track down his impostor's base, as no one had known it was Gerald yet. And soon enough, Team Sonic, Ivo, and Agent Stone were at Gerald's base. After venturing it throughout, Team Sonic and Agent Stone were captured by Shadow, leaving Ivo to reunite with his grandfather for the first time. Ivo was happy, but demands an explanation of why Gerald was absent throughout his life because he grew up as an orphan. Gerald then reveals that he was imprisoned for 50 years. Because of this, he simply couldn't "send any Christmas cards."

Over the course of the film, Ivo began working with his grandfather and Shadow in an attempt to aid Gerald in activating the Eclipse Cannon. However, whereas Ivo had believed that he and his grandfather would use the weapon to simply conquer the world together, he's unaware that Gerald is actually intending to use his weapon to utterly destroy the planet as revenge against humanity for Maria's death. Agent Stone even attempts to warn Ivo of Gerald's true intentions, but is dismissed by Ivo much to his chagrin.

During the climax of the film, Gerald gets Shadow to power up the Eclipse Cannon by creating a surge field made out of Chaos Energy before having him battle Sonic. Gerald eventually reveals to Ivo his master plan to completely obliterate the Earth for good and is cengefully going to wipe out everything so they can join Maria's death.

While he is revealing this to Ivo he also is revealing that the cannon will self-destruct (due to the overload of the Chaos Energy) upon firing the laser, which will kill them both inside, which Gerald himself is completely aware of because he is actually planning to join Maria's death as he tells Ivo to do the same as well. Completely horrified by this, Ivo tries to reason with Gerald by claiming that it's better to rule the Earth rather than destroy it, and that Ivo himself is the only family member that Gerald has left.

However, Gerald cruelly states that he never really considered Ivo to be family, following Maria’s death, proclaiming that he would rather destroy the Earth and kill trillions of lifeforms thus, calling them a failed science experiment (including himself, Ivo, and Shadow) to gain closure for Maria's death. Even upon learning that Shadow has had a change of heart and is teaming up with Sonic, Gerald wastes no time sending a vast army of G.U.N. Hunters to take both Sonic and Shadow down. However, the power of the Chaos Emeralds gave both Sonic and Shadow to destroy the G.U.N. Hunters.

Having realizing the truth now that Gerald can't be reasoned with anymore, Ivo tricks him into looking up as he point to where Gerald is paying attention to then Ivo tells his Genocidal Grandfather to look up higher which apparently he does, allowing Ivo to hit his throat from 3 oz of pressure having Gerald collapse to the ground in order to try and stop him with his evil plan, resulting a fight between the two upon pulling both of their mustaches, hitting and beating each other up by using technical upgrades from their specialized suits as Gerald spanks his grandson in the process.

Gerald turned himself into a robotic Scorpion whereas Ivo turns himself into a robotic Mantis, and the two fight. Afterward, Ivo manages to slice a chunk of Gerald's mustache off his face, scratching it. And then, Gerald referred to it as elder abuse, and he called Ivo an elder abuser.

Until Gerald gains the upper hand, he thrips Ivo with the scorpions tail and sends Ivo tumbling through a hatch in the Eclipse Cannon's main deck. However, Ivo is saved from falling into the vacuum of outer space by Tails and Knuckles.

With help from two of Sonic's friends, Ivo tells him that the one who thinks that all life is pointless was on him, claiming that his grandfather is way too dangerous to be left alive to try again with his plan. This means that Gerald is now confronted with the help from Agent Stone offscreen.

Using one of Super Sonic's energized quills, Ivo furiously zaps Gerald in the butt, sending him flying into the Chaos Energy field, disintegrating him to death on contact, and avenging Commander Walters in the process. Working together, Ivo, Shadow, and Team Sonic divert the laser away from the Earth (though it sliced a portion of the Moon, much to their horror). Ivo and Shadow then proceed to sacrifice themselves by moving the Eclipse Cannon away from Earth before it self-destructs while letting Team Sonic escape to safety, thus foiling Gerald's evil plot for good and bringing real closure for Maria's death. However, a post credits scene reveals that Shadow managed to survive. And if Shadow survived, it's possible that Ivo survived too.

Powers and Abilities[]

  • Genius-level intelligence: Gerald, like his grandson, Dr. Ivo Robotnik, was incredibly smart.
  • Hacking skills: Gerald was able to take over Dr. Robotnik's Badnik robots.
  • Nano-suit: Gerald's Nano-suit allows him to make whatever he wants, rockets boosters, a nano-fist, scorpion claws and stinger, etc.
  • Longevity and Resilience: Gerald is 110 years old, but he appears to be incredibly fit for his advanced age, and he's easily as mobile as his grandson. He's also remarkably resilient, as shown in his fight with nanotech weapons against Dr. Eggman, suffering no injuries, except for his trimmed mustache.

Trivia[]

  • This is the first version of Gerald who actually ends up working with his grandson, and ends up not being executed in the past by G.U.N. However, Dr. Eggman does betray him after learning of his true plans.
  • Gerald serves as a negative counterpart to some of the characters in the film series:
    • Sonic and Shadow: Due to their grief and rage, Gerald and the hedgehogs wanted revenge for their loved ones: Tom for Sonic (who was only badly injured, but turned out to be okay in the end), and Maria for Shadow and Gerald. However, Sonic and Shadow learned that deep down, they still love them in their hearts, which made both of the hedgehogs realize the errors of their ways. And then, they decided to let their grief and anger go for the greater good. Meanwhile, Gerald refused to let go of his delusion of humanity as a whole because it brought him and Shadow pain and loss. He was also rotten and beyond redemption, due to the fact that he wanted to exterminate humanity for the death of Maria. If Sonic and Shadow hadn't let go of their rage and grief over what happened to the people that they cared for, they both would've ended up like Gerald.
    • Knuckles: They both have a grudge against someone who has killed the people that they care about. Knuckles had a grudge against Sonic because his first adoptive mother, Longclaw, killed his tribe. As for Gerald, he had a grudge against G.U.N. because they were responsible for Maria's death. But while Knuckles is able to let go of his grudge against Sonic, Gerald continues to get revenge on G.U.N., and he tries to destroy the world in order to avenge Maria's death. Gerald represents what Knuckles would've become if he tried to get revenge on Sonic for losing his tribe instead of becoming his friend.
    • Dr. Ivo Robotnik: They are both mad scientists with advanced knowledge for robotics and a desire to prove their intelligence to the world. However, Ivo shows a few redeeming qualities to a few people that he truly cares about (such as Agent Stone), while Gerald sheds whatever redeeming qualities (with the exception of his love for Maria), due to being unable to let go of his grief. Ivo even shows genuine disgust at Gerald's intent to destroy the Earth rather than ruling it. Gerald serves an example of what Ivo would've become if he became too consumed by his misanthropy and ego.
    • Maria: They are both eccentric and mischievous individuals with a connection to Shadow. But unlike Maria, who focused on the goodness and beauty around her, Gerald focused on the negative aspects of his life until it drove him insane. They additionally bonded with their allies differently, with Maria bonding with Shadow using imagination and nature, and Gerald bonding with Dr. Ivo Robotnik by using fake simulations and artificial activities. Gerald represents what Maria would've become if she hadn't met Shadow and became friends with him.
    • Tom Wachowski: Both Tom and Gerald served as a mentor to their adoptive hedgehog sons, Sonic and Shadow. However, Tom encouraged Sonic to listen to his heart and choose the right path, while Gerald tried to have Shadow embrace his vengeance and hatred for humanity. If Tom hadn't helped Sonic find the right path for him to take, he would've ended up like Gerald too.
    • Commander Walters: They both have a friendly relationship with Maria. They also work for G.U.N. And when Maria dies, Walters and Gerald feel sad about her death. However, Walters felt bad about causing her death after failing to stop the G.U.N. soldiers from trying to kill her, Gerald, and Shadow. Gerald, on the other hand, was furious because he thought that Walters and the G.U.N. soldiers killed Maria on purpose. As a bonus, Walters and Gerald were friends with alien hedgehogs (Sonic and Shadow). Although Walters tried to get rid of Sonic in Sonic the Hedgehog 2, they became friends in Sonic the Hedgehog 3. As for Gerald, he was friends with Shadow when he found him in a meteorite, but they became enemies when Shadow decided to help Dr. Ivo Robotnik and Team Sonic stop Gerald's plan to destroy the world. Gerald serves an example of what Walters would've become if he let his guilt consume him. Also, Walters would've ended up like Gerald if he hadn't became friends with Sonic.
    • Agent Stone: They are both Dr. Ivo Robotnik's partners/assistants. They also end up being betrayed by Ivo for different reasons (Agent Stone gets betrayed by Ivo when he thinks that he doesn't trust his grandfather; Gerald gets betrayed by Ivo when he refuses to help him destroy the world). But while Agent Stone stayed by Ivo's side (desetrayed), Gerald tried to kill him, so that he could stop him from foiling his evil plan. Gerald represents what Agent Stone would've become if he decided to abandon Dr. Eggman iIvoetaying by his side.
  • As Gerald states in the film, he's 110 years old, which makes him likely the oldest named character in the entirety of the film series.
    • It's implied that he achieved such longevity because of a quill he took from Shadow, prior to being imprisoned. It's fully confirmed in an interview with Jeff Fowler, the director of the Sonic the Hedgehog films, that the chaos energy within Shadow's quill has a revitalizing effect that has not only kept Gerald alive, but has slowly been rolling back his age, which further explains his relatively youthful appearance, despite being over 100 years old.
    • With the film being confirmed to be set in 2024, this means that Gerald was most likely born in 1914, and was 60 years old when Maria died.
    • Since Dr. Ivo Robotnik is said to be Maria's younger cousin, it's possible that she's actually older than him. And if Gerald was 65 years old when Ivo was born, it's possible that Maria died five years before the latter's birth.
  • There are several differences between this version of Gerald and his video game counterpart:
    • In the games, his death is an execution by a firing squad. However, in the film, he is killed by his grandson, being vaporized by the Chaos Energy of the Eclipse Cannon. This change was likely made to maintain the film's PG rating, as showing him being shot or executed onscreen would've been far more disturbing and violent for a young audience. It also would've resulted in a PG-13 rating for the film. Additionally, the producers wanted Jim Carrey to perform a double role, which required Gerald to remain alive.
    • In the games, Dr. Eggman already knows who he is, despite never meeting him, due to his execution, while in the film, Dr. Eggman has no idea that he even had a grandfather. This is likely because he was imprisoned for 50 years, and Dr. Eggman hasn't been born yet.
    • In Sonic Adventure 2, Gerald is already dead before the events of the game, which is evidenced by the 50-year-old video of his execution. But in the film, it only shows him being imprisoned for that amount of time.
    • In a flashback from Shadow the Hedgehog, he has Black Doom help him create Shadow, while in the film, Shadow merely crash landed on Earth, and his origins are currently unknown.
    • With the exception of Maria, Gerald has shown no attachment to his family in the film, while in the games, Gerald had a strained but mutually caring relationship with his family members largely, due to Maria's terminal illness, which is actually nonexistent in the film. When it comes to Dr. Eggman in the movie adaptation, it's clear that Gerald never saw Dr. Eggman as someone he wants to live for, although Dr. Eggman mirrors him. Conversely, Gerald's relationship with Dr. Eggman in the games is largely ambiguous.
    • He has several comedic moments across the film, unlike his video game version, who is commonly portrayed as a serious individual. Although, the film version does become serious near the end of the film after revealing his true nature to Dr. Eggman.
  • While he is labeled as Dr. Gerald Robotnik on his name lanyard, he is never actually addressed as such in the film. Instead, he is consistently referred to as "Professor", just like in the games. It's likely that this is an error on the filmmakers' part.
  • Gerald using nano tech in the shape of a scorpion is likely a reference to the boss, Scorpius, from the game, Sonic Spinball.
  • The novelization of the second film revealed that his grandson's middle name is "Gerald" as well. Therefore, this is the first and only incarnation of him to share a same name with Dr. Eggman himself.
  • Despite being the main antagonist of the third film, Gerald didn't have a lot of interactions with Team Sonic.
  • Gerald is the only main antagonist who doesn't meet or interact with Wade Whipple. His grandson, Dr. Eggman, has met and interacted with Wade in the first two films.
  • Gerald is also the only main antagonist who gets killed in a film. Although Dr. Robotnik was presumably killed in Sonic the Hedgehog 2, he was revealed to still be alive in Sonic the Hedgehog 3. He also sacrificed himself in the latter film, but his fate wasn't revealed.
  • Although Gerald isn't Shadow's creator in the Sonic Cinematic Universe, he is actually his adoptive father. And since Maria and Ivo are Gerald's grandchildren, it's possible that they're also Shadow's adoptive niece and nephew, respectively. The reason why is because Maria and Ivo's fathers are Gerald's biological sons. And since Shadow is Gerald's adoptive son, Maria and Ivo's fathers might be his adoptive brothers.
  • Unlike Agent Stone and the Scavengers, Gerald interacted with the Wachowski family. But unlike his grandson, he didn't have a lot of interactions with them.
  • Just like his grandson (who licks Sonic's quill), Gerald always licks Shadow's quill.
  • When they first met, Gerald and Dr. Ivo Robotnik broke the fourth wall by saying that they look extremely alike, and that they're being played by the same actor in a movie. They also looked at the audience. Their comment is actually a reference to the fact that they were both portrayed by Jim Carrey in Sonic the Hedgehog 3. In fact, this is the first time someone other than Sonic broke the fourth wall in the Sonic Cinematic Universe.
  • This is the first and currently only official incarnation of Gerald who is confirmed to meet his grandson, Dr. Eggman. This is because all other versions, including his mainstream counterpart, were already dead before he ever got to meet Dr. Eggman.
  • He is the first and currently only official version of the character to have visible eyes, whereas his own eyes were never revealed behind his dark glasses in other media.
  • Unlike his game counterpart, his Pince-nez glasses aren't tinted and blue. Although his grandson, Dr. Eggman, doesn't wear glasses like he does in usual media, he does wear a pair of goggles.
  • According to director Jeff Fowler, the makeup for Gerald took Jim Carrey three hours to do.
  • Gerald's mustache is almost as long and bushy as Dr. Eggman's was in the Mushroom Planet ending scene from the original film, which got shorter as the film series went on.
  • This is also the first and currently only incarnation of Gerald to meet Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Shadow after he was waken up.
  • An unused idea for the third film involved Gerald being trapped in a limbo out of time, manifesting as a Chaos Energy ghost in the real world.
  • Gerald's first name is also his grandson's middle name.
  • Gerald's belly size is also closer to what fans wanted Dr. Eggman's fat size to be.
    • However, in the video games, it's pretty much the other way around. The video games' timeline shows that Gerald is skinnier than Dr. Eggman, such as in Sonic X Shadow Generations. Dr. Eggman admits that his grandfather is fatter than him when he encounters him for the first time.
