Professor Richard Impossible later on known as Professor Incorrigible is a supporting antagonist in the animated TV series The Venture Bros. He's a super-powered scientist and the president of the think tank known as Impossible Industries. Despite his brilliance, Richard is secretly an abusive husband to his wife, Sally who purposely exposed her, his brother-in-law Cody and Sally's mentally-challenged cousin Ned to gamma rays, giving them defective superpowers. Richard later on becomes a full-fledged supervillain after joining Phantom Limb's Revenge Society.
In seasons 1, 2 and 6 he was voiced by Stephen Colbert, who has also played Zeep Xanflorp in Rick & Morty, Myron Reducto and Phil Ken Sebben in Harvey Birdman: Attorney at Law and James Bennett in Law & Order: Criminal Intent. In the pilot episode, he was voiced by Peter McCulloch. In season 3, he was voiced by Christopher McCulloch who also voiced The Monarch, The Sovereign, Dr. Z and many other characters in the same show, as well as Paul and the Doctor in Superjail!. In season 4, he was voiced by Bill Hader, who has also portrayed Barry Berkman in Barry, King Leonard Mudbeard in The Angry Birds Movie, Guy Gagné in Turbo, Bloodbottler in The BFG, Agent Haggard in Paul, Hansel in Hoodwinked Too! Hood vs. Evil and Cyrus Strange in The Addams Family 2.
Biography[]
He keeps his wife, son, and brother-in-law hidden from the public, but they eventually leave him for Jonas Venture Jr. and join a sub-sect of Team Venture. Richard is a genius and very successful (unlike most of the super-scientists who appear in the series), but he is completely amoral and arrogant.
After the events in the episode "20 Years to Midnight", Richard's wife Sally leaves him after tiring of his irresponsibility in taking care of their son Rocket and begins a relationship with Jonas Venture Jr. This causes Prof. Impossible to go through a phase of deep depression. Later on, Richard would join Phantom Limb in the "Revenge Society" and helps the Phantom Limb escape Guild custody. Their further plans are to be revealed.
Trivia[]
- Professor Impossible is a villainous parody of Professor Reed Richards, better known as Mister Fantastic from Marvel's Fantastic Four. His abusive relationship towards his wife and her two relatives is a reference to Reed's questionable behaviour in the early Fantastic Four comics which usually portrayed him caring more about his work than his own family and friends and subsequently led to the accident that gave all of them their superpowers.
- Funnily enough, Professor Impossible debuted in the show years before Marvel made their own villainous spin on Reed Richards in the Ultimate Marvel continuity.
- In the after-credits scene of "Ice Station Impossible", Richard analyzes a urine sample of Sally, thinking it's Rusty's and ends up coming up with the conclusion that "Dr. Venture is pregnant". While the scene is obviously a reveal that his wife was hiding her pregnancy from him, it could also be interpreted as foreshadowing to the reveal of Jonas Venture Jr. living inside of Rusty's body after the latter had eaten him inside the womb in the season 1 finale.
