Professor Achilles Milo is a supporting antagonist in the DC Animated Universe, serving as a supporting antagonist in season 1 of Batman: The Animated Series, specifically as the secondary antagonist of the episode "Cat Scratch Fever" and the main antagonist of the episode "Moon of the Wolf", and as a minor antagonist in the Season 2 of Justice League Unlimited, specifically as the secondary antagonist of the episode "The Doomsday Sanction".

He is an unscrupulous Gothamite scientist with expertise on genetics who works in shady businesses with whoever is able to afford his services, such as Roland Daggett or Amanda Waller, even joining the latter's Project Cadmus later on. His unethical schemes often involved the intervention of Batman, the protector of Gotham City, though Milo saw the Dark Knight as more of an obstacle than a rival.

In his first two appearances, he was voiced by the late Treat Williams, who also played Stanley Kowalski in the 1984 A Streetcar Named Desire film, Jimmy Conway O'Donnell in Once Upon a Time in America, Arnold Friend in Smooth Talk, Howard Prince in Tales from the Crypt and Xander Drax in The Phantom. In his last appearance, he was voiced by Armin Shimmerman, who also played Bractor and Letek in Star Trek: The Next Generation, General Reginald Skarr in the Grim & Evil franchise, Dr. Nefarious and his remake version in the Ratchet & Clank video games and 2016 film respectively, Emperor Sun Hai and The Keeper in Jade Empire, Andrew Ryan in the BioShock video game series, Psycho-Pirate in Batman: The Brave and the Bold and Buttonwillow McButtonwillow in Regular Show.

Appearance[]

Milo has a black bowl cut and a long nose. He wears a white (although it was once brown in "Cat Scratch Fever") coat, a light blue shirt, and dark grey pants. His design has not changed much in Justice League Unlimited, although he now has a bit of stubble, and his blue shirt has a darker tone.

Biography[]

Batman The Animated Series[]

In "Cat Scratch Fever", Professor Milo is hired by Daggett Labs CEO Roland Daggett to create a special virus that turns animals feral against their nature: Dagget's plan involves unleashing the aggressive animals over Gotham City, let them infect as much Gothamites they could and then Daggett would market a anti-toxin to profit from it. To test his toxin, Milo sends his henchmen Jessy and Paunch to abduct all the stray dogs and cats they can. One night, Milo demonstrates the effectiveness of his formula by injecting it on a dog, impressing Daggett, who orders Milo to finish his operation as soon as possible, so Milo proceeds to infect all the other stray animals with his toxin.

The following night, Catwoman breaks into Daggett Labs to rescue her pet cat Isis, who was among the abducted animals, but the infected Isis bites her just as Milo and his minions enter into the room. Catwoman manages to escape, but Milo lets her do it because the toxin's effects have started on Catwoman, which makes her dizzy and clumsy, with only a few more hours to live if not injected with the anti-toxin. Meanwhile, Milo and Daggett prepare to drop the animals over the city, but Milo and Jessy find out Batman interrogating Paunch, so they release an infected dog to chase Batman away and kill him as they prepare to leave all the strays over the city.

Before they are able to drop a single feral stray animal, Milo and Jessy follow Batman thanks to the infected dog to the hideout where he has been hiding Catwoman and shoot at the thin ice from the frozen lake where Batman cures the dog, breaking it and sending both Batman and the dog into the cold waters. After only the dog emerges from the cold lake, Milo and Jessy expect Batman to die from hypothermia, but Batman breaks the ice under them and captures them, getting the anti-toxin and saving Catwoman in addition to getting Daggett into trouble with the authorities.

In "Moon of the Wolf", Milo returns as Gothamite athlethe Anthony Romulus' secret steroid supplier. It turns out that before Romulus' participation in the Autumn Games, Milo approached him with chemical steroids of timberwolf hormones when Romulus asked for something that could guarantee a gold medal. Romulus took the steroids and gained fame and wealth, but turned on Milo and refused to pay him. However, the steroids had a terrible side effect that only Milo knew: they would slowly turn Romulus into a werewolf, so Romulus had to become the doctor's minion if he wanted to be cured from his condition.

With Romulus under his control, Milo dispatches him to kill Gotham Zoo guard John Hamner because he was the one who allowed Milo to extract the hormones from the zoo's timber wolves. However, Batman manages to save Hamner and surrenders him to the authorities. As such, Milo orders Romulus to trick Batman into going to his house so they can dispose of him. Romulus does so, but before the two can decide what to do with the Dark Knight, Romulus permanently becomes a werewolf and attacks Milo, who drops the antidote in fear, much to Romulus' fury. In the end, Batman manages to defeat Romulus, who vanishes without a trace, and Milo is taken into custody by Commisioner James Gordon and his cops, though Milo confidently gloats that he will be able to avoid justice.

The New Batman Adventures[]

He is featured on the cover of the first issue of the tie-in comic for The New Batman Adventures, titled "Batman: Gotham Adventures", however, he is not seen within the story itself. He appears as a cameo, alongside many other villains.

Justice League Unlimited[]

Professor Milo eventually resurfaces in "The Doomsday Sanction". Since his last appearance, Milo has joined Project Cadmus, forming part of the organization's inner circle alongside Amanda Waller, Tala, General Wade Eiling, Professor Emil Hamilton, Hugo Strange and Doctor Moon. Financed by Lex Luthor, Milo and his Cadmus colleagues conspire together to undermine the Justice League, all unaware that the true mastermind behind Cadmus is none other than Brainiac, who hides inside Luthor. His Head Division was that focused on splicing, but despite his previous expertise and counting with the redeemed Kirk Langstrom's notes, Milo's work doesn't meet Cadmus' high standards, with him experimenting with a warthog that ended up wrecking his lab. Angered at Milo's disastrous experiments, Waller cites him and the other Cadmus leaders and told Milo that he was fired from the Head Divisions, instead being reassigned to a lower position within the organization.

Angered at his firing, after fantasizing about shooting his superiors dead, Milo opts to go to the room where Doomsday has been held since his lobotomization at the hands of Lord Superman from the Justice Lords. Desiring revenge against Waller and Hamilton, Milo informs Doomsday of his origins and his purpose, trying to convince him to not go after Superman but instead go after those who indoctrinated and fabricated his hatred for the Man of Steel. Doomsday apparently accepts Milo's offer and tells him to free him so they can both have their revenge. Foolishly believing that the Cadmus abomination would serve him, Milo releases Doomsday, but his smug face soon turns into one of terror when Doomsday menacingly goes towards him. Milo asks what he's gonna do, but Doomsday simply replies that his problem's solved and kills him. Following Doomsday's escape, Waller swears to have Milo severally punished, but one of her guards assured her that Doomsday had already beat her to the punch, presumably hinting that Doomsday fatally crushed Milo's head.

Trivia[]

Professor Milo debut in the DC Animated Universe was his first overall appearance (outside of a cameo in the intro of the 1966 Batman TV series) in other media than in comic books.
Due to his status as a lesser-known Batman villain, Milo was able to evade the Bat-embargo in the last two seasons of Justice League Unlimited.
Milo appears in the Golden Books' "Tale n' Tape" adaptation of "Moon of the Wolf", with Treat Williams reprising his role.
