“ | The only circus crew around here are the freaks that belong to that charlatan snake oil salesman, Professor Perry. You better pray that you don't run into them; them circus folk just ain't right in the head. | „ |
~ Mathias Lamprey to Red Harlow. |
Professor Perry's Circus are minor but crucial antagonists of the 2004 RockStar video game Red Dead Revolver as Professor Perry serves as arch-nemesis of Jack Swift, one of the game's main heroes.
Four of the gang members are playable characters.
Biography[]
Originally a friendly circus crew belonging to Preston O'Leary, the mad scientist and snake oil salesman known as Prof. Perry, along with "The Blade" Slade and "Lightning" Larouche (original Preston's crew members who betrayed him), murdered O'Leary and his crew when they were resting in tents just outside of Tarnation. The law enforcements were not able to arrest Perry and his cronies due to the lack of evidence and manpower and Perry took over the circus, turning it into a sadistic outlaw gang.
Professor Perry's Circus was known for travelling around the frontier, going from town to town and cause nothing but problems.
Eventually, the circus settled in old Fairgrounds near Brimstone and Widow's Patch which they ran after the death of The Ugly Gang. Unlike the Ugly gang, who functioned more as dimwitted outlaws, Perry's circus were homicidal (probably also suicidal) maniacs who seemed to kill and rob more for the thrill of it than any financial gain.
The circus had a thing for kidnapping and put Jack Swift, one of the game's heroes and a supposed sharpshooter who planned on joining the circus, into a cage at Fairgrounds after his falling out with Perry. At the same time, Red Harlow was hired by Brimstone's Sheriff Office to take down "Pig" Josh, the circus' demolition expert, who was causing troubles in Brimstone hotel with dynamite. Harlow freed Jack from his cage during the fight and the two fought many of Perry's cronies, including Fidgit and "Digs" Fowler before finally killing Josh himself.
Later that night, Swift went to Widow's Patch to finish off Perry and the rest of the circus once and for all and found Katie O'Grady tied to the water tower in the middle of the town. Attempting to free her, Swift was attacked by "The Blade" Slade, a couple of clowns and "Lightning" Larouche, but he managed to kill all of them. Finally, Prof. Perry (along with Atlas Jones) shows up in Jack's face and taunts him. After killing Atlas and shooting Perry, the Professor starts teleporting and regenerating his health, sending his minions (one of which included Asada) after Jack every once in a while when stopping to take a sip of his elixir. After running out of his elixir, Perry is finally finished off by Jack who then frees Katie and the circus possibly disbands after this.
Members[]
- Professor Perry: The leader of the insane circus and a known charlatan, Professor Perry is a twisted and disturbed man indeed and seems to possess a number of supernatural powers. Despite being a mass murderer, Perry is quite intelligent and manipulative, for he has convinced many unfortunate fools to buy his snake oil products which had terrifying results, either leaving people dead or seriously ill. To make matters worse, Perry even sold a couple of his elixirs to children, according to a woman in Brimstone. Perry has a lot of animosity towards Jack Swift for some reason and denied his entry into the circus as a sharpshooter along with mocking his English heritage. Perry uses an Inquisitor plus Snake oil as his weapons and in Showdown mode he is also able to grab and thrown down an opponent but lacks his teleporting abilities.
- "Pig" Josh: Real name Joshua, "Pig" is a former Confederate army veteran-turned outlaw with a love for dynamite and a bounty of 150$ on his head. He is the ex-boyfriend of Bat Lady and the father of dwarf clown Fidgit, who also has a love for dynamite just like his father. He gets killed by Red at the Fairgrounds after failing to kill him with dynamite. In Showdown mode he is equipped with the Pacificador, a bunch of dynamite and his special ability has him blow the dynamite very close to the opponent and he also has the ability to grab an opponent and throw him.
- Fidgit: Fidgit is one of Perry's clowns, clearly insane and the offspring of "Pig" Josh and the Bat Lady. He has dwarfism and also appears to have a Hapsburg jaw. Him and his brothers make up the army of "Perry's clown minions" and find humour in their homicidal acts and are probably suicidal as well, for they make laughing noises even when getting killed or attacked. They use six-shooters and rifles as their weapons. Due to his character model appearing a lot more often than the other clowns, Fidgit is possibly one of the higher-ups in the gang. In Showdown mode he is equipped with a Six-shooter and dynamite and his special ability is to put down a fake card which explodes when the opponent collects it.
- Clyde "The Blade" Slade: Clyde, along with Larouche, was originally one of Preston O'Leary's performers. Clyde was actually a very bad knife-thrower, and he accidentally killed some of O'Leary's performers with his Bowie knives after 'missing in his act' and was rumoured that O'Leary was going to fire him for it. Perry however, found use in Clyde and he allowed him to continue his act when he took over. Clyde uses his Bowie knives as weapons in story mode, while in Showdown he is also equipped with an Inquisitor. His special ability is throwing a couple of knives into a target, like a home-made missile and killing the opponent instantly.
- "Lightning" Larouche: Of French descent, Larouche was one of O'Leary's performers back in the day and an amazing fire-breather. For some reason he helped Prof. Perry take over the circus and helped him kill Preston by burning him outside of Tarnation. He was also very useful in persuading folks to buy Perry's "miracle elixir", for he threatened with his torch. He was killed right after Slade and uses his torch and a six-shooter as his weapons and is not playable in Showdown mode.
- Atlas Jones: Atlas Jones was Perry's personal bodyguard and strong man of the circus. Being over 7'1, he carried around a steel shield and brass knuckles, not like that he would need them, according to Sheriff Bartlett. Despite his strength, he was killed by Jack Swift after Larouche before Jack went after Perry himself. Atlas is not playable in Showdown mode.
- Asada: Asada was a known criminal around Brimstone of Hispanic descent but a really bad one as he spend all of his money as quickly as he got it. He was a carny and an acrobat in Perry's circus and served as one of his henchman, like Fidgit. He prefers to shot at Jack from the balcony with a six-shooter but is nevertheless killed by him. He is not playable in Showdown mode.
- Bat Lady: Very little is known of the Bat Lady since she is never seen in the game, only mentioned in Sheriff Bartlett's journal as being a mistress of "Pig" Josh and possibly the mother of Fidgit. Judging by her name, one can assume she had something to do with bats in the circus. It is unknown why she left it, but it is possible its criminal acts might have something to do with it.
- Gordon "Digs" Fowler: Though originally a member of Dead Gang, Fowler serves a henchman of "Pig" Josh during the mission "Carnival Life" and spawns four times in the mission along with an army of Fidgits. He uses a six-shooter and a rifle as his weapons. He is playable in Showdown mode where he also uses a large shotgun and his special ability grants him explosive bullets.

Trivia[]
- It is unknown what the reasons were for Jack Swift and Prof. Perry's falling out, but one can assume the circus' crimes didn't play a large part of it. Swift himself was a notorious bank robber in London and had to escape to America by boat to avoid being hang and when saving Katie O'Grady after killing Perry, he seemed to be interested only in a financial reward rather than actually saving her life.
- "Pig" Josh can be downloaded as a playable character in Red Dead Redemption via the Legends and Killers pack, along with a few other Revolver characters.
- The circus seems to have some sort of fixation on Satanism or at least the number 666 aka the Number of the Beast; Perry's old monocle which can be bought to unlock him as a playable character costs 666$ and the Napoleon statue which must be bought to unlock Fidgit costs $999 which is 666 if flipped around. Furthermore, Fidgit has the number 666 written on the left side of his journal page. "Pig" Josh's journal image also tries to depict him having devil's horns.
- Pig Josh is the tallest and heaviest playable members of the Professor Perry's Circus, standing at around 189 cm (6'2'' feet) and weighs 248kg (547 pounds).
- However, the tallest member of the circus is actually Atlas Jones, who is over 7' feet. At least on his journal page he is.
