~ Puck, speaking to the newly awakened Swordsman

Puck is the main antagonist of the episode "PAC-MAN: Circle" of the 2024 anthology series Secret Level. It will also appear in the upcoming video game Shadow Labyrinth, a spin-off of the Pac-Man franchise which the aforementioned episode is based on.

It is a golden spherical drone that awakens a humanoid it dubs "the Chosen” and tasks him with escaping the maze, acting as a guide throughout. However, it turns out that the Swordsman is merely being used as a disposable pawn to help Puck escape from the maze it's been imprisoned in for an unknown timeframe. After the Swordsman's death at the end of the episode, Puck awakens another, identical humanoid to be the new "Chosen", starting the cycle anew.

It is voiced by Emily Swallow, who also played Amara in Supernatural, Belinda Zalman in the Beauty and the Beast TV series, and also voiced Emily in The Last of Us Part II.

Appearance[]

Puck appears as a flying metallic golden ball, roughly six inches in diameter. Despite being able to speak, it does not open its "mouth" in the show under normal circumstances; when it does, it reveals rows of rotating spikes inside.

When Puck possesses another being, that being's body transforms into a gigantic shadowy Pac-Man-like figure, with its original body inside acting as a core.

Biography[]

Puck awakens a nameless alien, referred to as the Swordsman in credits, and informs him that he is the "Chosen" who will escape from their dangerous planet known as the maze. While leading the Swordsman, Puck trains him in the philosophy of the maze: either eat or be eaten. To that extent, Puck encourages him to hunt and kill the local wildlife, and devour their remains.

When Puck and the Swordsman finally reach the exit of the maze, he is nearly killed by the monster guarding the exit; at this moment, Puck buries itself into his body and possesses him, turning into a larger monster that easily consumes the guardian. The Swordsman then realizes that Puck was using him to escape from the maze, which would only open for him. He then forcibly removes Puck from his own body and dies, leaving Puck unable to open the exit. Puck returns to the bunker where the Swordsman was awakened, as well as countless others before him, and prepares to awaken a new subject.

Personality[]

There's strength in repetition.
~ Puck

Puck's personality is deeply manipulative, predatory, and cunning. It operates with a singular goal: escape, regardless of the cost to others. Puck is a master of deception, presenting itself as a guide and ally while hiding its true intentions. By framing the Swordsman as the "Chosen," Puck exploits his desperation and survival instincts, shaping him into a tool for its own ends.

Puck’s philosophy of "eat or be eaten" reveals its nihilistic worldview, one that values dominance and survival above morality or compassion. It encourages violence and consumption as necessary means to an end, fostering a brutal, utilitarian mindset in its chosen subject. Despite its calm and calculated demeanor, Puck's willingness to possess the Swordsman at his most vulnerable moment exposes its ruthless, parasitic nature.

When its plan ultimately fails, Puck's reaction underscores its cold detachment. Rather than lament the loss of the Swordsman, it methodically resets the cycle, returning to the bunker to manipulate another victim. This cyclical behavior reveals Puck as an unrelenting, almost machine-like entity, devoid of empathy and focused entirely on its own survival and escape. Its personality embodies the themes of exploitation, futility, and the dark side of perseverance.

Trivia[]

  • The inside of Puck's mouth closely resembles the structure of GAMP; similarly, the exit to the maze has writing written in the Xevi language, suggesting a connection between the maze and Xevious.
  • Its name is Puck, which is half of Pac-Man's Japanese name, and it creates Pac-Man (or Puck-Man) by fusing with the Swordsman.
