King Mondo: Contemptible urchins. If there is anything that grinds my gears, it is the irksome laughter of human children!
Queen Machina: Yes, it simply makes my oil boil.
Mondo: They say that children shape the future of the Earth. If we can get those children on our side, we could rule supreme.
Machina: But look at them my love-bot. The little guttersnipes are so well behaved. It’s sickening.
Mondo: Not for long my dearest.
Machina: Do tell.
Mondo: That puppet has given me a smashing idea.
Machina: I’m sure it’s brilliant, darling.
Mondo: Thank you, my Queen. Your compliments mean the world to me. Now I will tell you my plan. It’s time that I played the strings on Earth.: Heh heh ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha.
~ The plan for the Puppetman.

The Puppetman is the Pinocchio and clown-themed robotic partner of Captain Pete and temporarily a monster of the Machine Empire under King Mondo. He served as the titular main antagonist of the Power Rangers Zeo episode "The Puppet Blaster."

He is voiced by Paul Pistore who also voiced Flashhead in Power Rangers Turbo a year later.

Biography[]

Unlike all other monsters of the Machine Empire, the Puppetman initially has no association with the organisation whatsoever. Instead, he was built by an unknown company and acts as the robotic partner of travelling children's entertainer Captain Pete. He is first seen at the Angel Grove Youth Center when Pete introduces him and the Puppetman successfully entertains the children only for King Mondo and Queen Machina to notice and see him as an opportunity to turn humanity's children against them and shape the future to thier desires. As such, they have Klank design a transmitter to corrupt him and send the Cogs who play along with the children's act as if they were just another part of the performance with the Rangers refusing to interfere due to the nearby children. This allows a Cog to attach the transmitter to the Puppetman who quickly turns into an evil form and brainwashes the children. As they cause chaos, the Zeo Rangers morph but are unable to fight the Puppetman due to him using the children as human shields before revealing he wants to use them to conquer the Earth. When the Zeo Rangers refuse to attack, he sends the children to attack but is soon called away by Mondo to start the next stage of thier plan.

Soon after the Puppetman's departure, he brainwashes several children in the Park before Billy reveals that he has gone with Klank and Orbus to the Angel Grove Satellite Center. The idea comes from Machina and aims to use a television satellite to broadcast his mind control signal across Angel Grove to brainwash the children. When the Zeo Rangers appear to stop him, they are initially outmatched with even the Advanced Zeo Laser Pistols proving ineffective but they then summon the Defender Wheel with which Tommy is finally able to stop him. However, Klank and Orbus then make him grow so the Zeo Rangers summon the Zeo Megazord which is no match for the Puppetman until they use the Zeo II Battle Helmet to destroy his cogs and take him down with the Zeo IV Battle Helmet. Despite him then unleashing a very powerful laser, Billy reveals that his power source is his nose so they equip the Zeo Megazord Saber, cleave off his nose and kill the now powerful Puppetman with an energised slash. Afterwards though, the Puppetman is rebuilt to once again become Captain Pete's partner with Billy mentioning that he installed something to make him immune to future brainwashing. What happened to the Puppetman after this is unknown.

Sprocket: I really hate those lousy Power Rangers! Look at what they've done this time! Mommy, they've ruined my favourite creation!
Machina: There, there my dear. Don't blame yourself. You mustn't take it personally. They have ruined all our creations.
~ Sprocket and Machina after Punch-A-Bunch destroyed his glove.

After Prince Sprocket complains about Punch-A-Bunch damaging himself during battle against the Zeo Rangers, Boohoo the Clown is indirectly referenced along with all previous monsters used up to that point when Machina reassures her distraught son that the Rangers have ruined all of their monsters.

When Adam finds a cog medallion whilst training for a karate tournament, Klank bemoans how this could lead to the failure of the plan with Admiral Abominator but Orbus mentions it not being the first time; indirectly referencing Boohoo.

Personality[]

The Puppetman is a kind and jolly robot who cares greatly about children and making them happy. After being brainwashed, he retained his jolly and jokey nature but changed so every joke was a poorly disguised threat. In the process, the Puppetman became a violent and manipulative sadist; willing to use children to protect himself from the Zeo Rangers and brutally beating them down later.

Powers and Abilities[]

  • Strength: The Puppetman took down each of the Zeo Rangers with strikes from either hand and wipe out both Rocky and Adam with a single sweep. When giant, he was able to knock back the Zeo Megazord with one mace strike to the chest.
    • Headbutt: The Puppetman could head-butt with enough force to knock back Tommy.
  • Durability: The Puppetman proved immune to multiple hits from Tommy, the Zeo Pod Swords hitting the light on his head and all five Advanced Zeo Laser Pistols being fired at him at once. When giant, he shrugged off multiple punches and a kick from the Zeo Megazord as well as the Zeo IV Battle Helmet ramming him without getting a scratch.
  • Expert Fighter: The Puppetman was able to outfight all five Ohrangers in battle.
  • Reflexes: The Puppetman was fast enough to spin and avoid a kick from Kat as well as knock down a running kick from Tommy.
  • Brainwashing Lasers: The Puppetman was able to fire blue lasers from the barrels on his left "hand" that could brainwash a large group of children.
    • Mass Brainwashing: If hooked up to a greater energy source, like the Angel Grove Satellite Station, the Puppetman could brainwash every child on Earth.
  • Teleportation: The Puppetman could teleport by flashing the light on his head and making blue enrgy streams swirl across him.
  • Cog Launch: The Puppetman could fire razor sharp cogs from his shoulders to slam into the enemy with devastating force.
  • Nose Blast: The Puppetman could fire a powerful blue energy blast from his nose.

Weaknesses[]

  • Nose: The Puppetman was controlled and supplied with power by King Mondo through his nose. When the Zeo Megazord cut it off, he was completely powerless and easily destroyed.

Arsenal[]

  • Mace Hand: In place of his right hand, the Puppetman had a massive silver mace which he could use to bash his enemies.
    • Ring Blasts: The Puppetman could fire large blue rings out of his mace hand's spikes that were strong enough to take down all five Zeo Rangers with one hit.

Trivia[]

  • Whereas Captain Pete was a knock-off of Captain Kangaroo, the Puppetman appeared to be based upon Bozo the Clown; an iconic American clown that was once very popular until the popularity of clowns as a whole began a steep decline following the arrest of John Wayne Gacy.
