~ Quan Chi to Raiden and Fujin in Mortal Kombat X.
Quan Chi is one of the main antagonists of the Mortal Kombat: Titan Trilogy, both a reboot and spin-off of the Mortal Kombat franchise.
He is a powerful demon necromancer from the Netherrealm, the right-hand follower of Shinnok, and founder of the Brotherhood of Shadow, an ancient demonic cult that worships the fallen elder God. He is the arch-nemesis of Hanzo Hasashi, as he was responsible for destroying his clan and killing his family, and deceiving him into believing Sub-Zero being responsible for their demise.
Quan Chi is a very tall pale white demon with a well-built body, a bald head, red eyes, and chakra markings on his forehead and his arms.
In Mortal Kombat (2011), Quan Chi is a topless, wearing only a spiked sash secured with a leather belt, black leather pants, and brown boots, with armor guards on his knees. In Mortal Kombat X, he wore an armored cuirass with spikes on his collar, which is clearly a reminiscent of his original outfit in Mortal Kombat 4.
Personality[]
Similar to his original incarnation, Quan Chi is a heavily ruthless and manipulative demon necromancer who does not care for anyone but himself and his master, Shinnok. Quan Chi is willing to manipulate and cheat to get what he desires and shows no sign of remorse for his heinous acts. He always speaks in a polite and formal tone, but that's merely to hide how much of a sadistic demon he truly is as he often goes to mock the heroes numerous times, especially if he taunts them about their loved ones' demise and using them as his personal servants.
History[]
Backstory[]
This version of Quan Chi is implied to share a similar history to his original counterpart, being a Netherrealm sorcerer who aligned himself with Shinnok. At some point, Quan Chi was sent to infiltrate Shao Kahn's court at act as a double agent for the Netherrealm. While there, he elected to kill his queen, Sindel, feeling that she was a distraction. He made her death seem to be a suicide, and claimed that she had turned against Shao Kahn and had put up a protective barrier around Earthrealm, when in reality he who the one who set it up so that he could manipulate Kahn later. As well as this, the events of Mythologies are referenced to have happened before the Earthrealm Mortal Kombat tournament.
Mortal Kombat (2011)[]
Quan Chi is first seen in the game with Shang Tsung during the first tournament when Scorpion appears demanding to face Sub-Zero. Quan Chi, who had sent him there, tells Scorpion to restrain himself, but Shang Tsung initially denies Scorpion his request. after Scorpion defeats Kung Lao and Nightwolf he is able to face Sub-Zero and defeats him. However, Scorpion decides not to kill him as he remembers the deal he made with Raiden. Quan Chi however, senses this and, not wanting all of his plans to be ruined pushes Scorpion to kill Sub-Zero by showing him fake images of Sub-Zero slaughtering his family and clan, when Quan Chi himself did it, which is enough to get Scorpion to kill Sub-Zero. Quan Chi uses the situation to his advantage more by resurrecting Sub-Zero as Noob Saibot to be one of his loyal soldiers. He also later teams up with Scorpion to fight against Liu Kang.
Quan Chi also appears during the second tournament on Outworld, where he is once again the one who sent Scorpion. After the younger Sub-Zero defeats Reptile, Shao Kahn says that Scorpion is Sub-Zero's next opponent. Quan Chi summons Scorpion from the Neatherrealm in order to make that happen. Later in the tournament, Quan Chi partners with Shang Tsung to defeat Kung Lao, but they fail, and Shao Kahn is eventually defeated. Quan Chi helps Shao Kahn heal when Liu Kang punches a hole through his chest with his sorcery and in order to make Shao Kahn's invasion of Earthrealm happen he helps Shao Kahn with resurrecting Queen Sindel and brainwashing her to be completely loyal to Shao Kahn, which meant the Sindel's magic no longer protected Earthrealm.
During the invasion of Earthrealm, Quan Chi is in Shao Kahn's throne room when Mileena returns from Earthrealm with the body of Motaro, who had been killed by Raiden. He also witnesses Shao Kahn sacrifice his right-hand, Shang Tsung in order to enhance Queen Sindel's powers, which causes her to be able to murder almost every Earthrealm warrior. After Kabal wins his battle with Noob Saibot and Mileena, Shao Kahn orders Quan Chi to seal the portal to Earthrealm that Mileena came through so Kobal is unable to escape, but while Quan Chi success in closing the portal Kabal is able to escape just before the portal closes. Quan Chi also with Noob Saibot's assistance opens a Soulnado to the heavens, but is stopped by Nightwolf, so Quan Chi retreats to the Neatherealm.
After Sindel murders almost every Earthrealm warrior, Raiden, in an act of desperation, goes to the Netherrealm to plead for Quan Chi's assistance. Raiden offers the souls of all of the fallen Earthrealm warriors and even his own soul, any future fallen souls to try and seal the deal. However, Quan Chi refuses, stating he already has a deal with Shao Kahn giving him the souls of everyone who has died in Mortal Kombat, and demonstrates this by summoning undead versions of Kung Lao, Nightwolf, Sindel, Kitana, Jade, Cyber Sub-Zero, Smoke, Jax Briggs, Kurtis Stryker, and Kabal.
He orders the undead revenants to attack Raiden showing him that they are under his control. After Raiden defeats the revenants of his former friends, he is forced to flee with nothing. Just before Raiden leaves, Quan Chi informs Raiden that Shao Kahn will soon arrive in the Earthrealm to merge it into the Outworld, giving Raiden the idea if he lets Shao Kahn win, which would cause the Elder Gods will have to get involved because Shao Kahn would be attempting to merge the realms without winning Mortal Kombat. Raiden thanks Quan Chi and leaves.
Raiden is victorious, but everyone fits perfectly into Quan Chi and Shinnok's plan, who he had been taking orders from the whole time, plan. Since most of the Earthrealm warriors are dead and Outworld is significantly weakened, soon Shinnok would be able to take Earthrealm and Outworld and nobody would be able to oppose him.
Mortal Kombat X Comic[]
As seen in flashback, after Hanzo Hasashi died at the hands of the cryomancer Sub-Zero, Quan Chi approaches the tormented Shirai Ryu in the Netherrealm. Intrigued that the fires of the Netherrealm did not burn him, Quan Chi questions Hanzo over his immunity to hellfire and when Hanzo could only call out to his family, Quan Chi becomes further interested. Using his magic to pull Hanzo to him, Quan Chi imbues Hanzo with the hellfire of the Netherrealm, all the while promising Hanzo vengeance and justice for his clan and family. To the dark sorcerer's delight, the infusion was successful and the wraith Scorpion was born. Quan Chi was present when Scorpion took his retribution on Bi-Han, who pleaded his innocence even as he was being burnt alive, and fought alongside Scorpion against Liu Kang in the Mortal Kombat Tournament.
Quan Chi was present when Shao Kahn adopted Reiko and declared him his most ruthless general. After Kahn's death at the hands of the Elder Gods, Quan Chi spoke with Shinnok. Neither the sorcerer nor the fallen god realized that they were being observed by an enraged Reiko.
As the Netherrealm War began, Quan Chi realized that the cybernetic Sub-Zero still possessed a soul and has his revenants, Smoke and Jax, hold Sub-Zero in place. When Sub-Zero expressed confusion by his friends actions, Quan Chi explained to him that his soul belonged to the Netherrealm and calls a defiant Sub-Zero his puppet. Using his dark magic, Quan Chi destroys Sub-Zero's cyborg body, saying that he doesn't trust technology and prefers the traditions of blood and sorcery. Quan Chi then restores what little of Kuai Liang's human body remained, reviving him as one of his revenants. In the final hours of the Netherrealm War, Quan Chi's fortress was assaulted by Special Forces, the necromancer himself under attack by Sonya Blade as Raiden used his divine power to free Sub-Zero, Jax Briggs, and Scorpion from Quan Chi's enslavement, reviving them in the process.
After the Netherrealm War, Quan Chi went into hiding deep within the Netherrealm, eventually coming into an alliance with the cleric of chaos, Havik. The two struck a deal: Quan Chi would provide Havik with Nitara's Blood Magik, which would allow the cleric to corrupt the Kamidogu that locked away Shinnok's amulet, and in return for this power, Havik would deliver Shinnok's amulet to Quan Chi after undoing Raiden and the Elder God's seal on the relic, so that the sorcerer could free his master. Havik, however, betrayed Quan Chi and attempted to use the amulet to sow chaos among the realms, even desiring to destroy the Netherrealm itself, only for his own plans to fail due to Quan Chi's former servant Scorpion beheading him and casting his still living head into the Netherrealm.
Quan Chi's servants Moloch and Drahmin delivered Havik's severed head to Quan Chi, and as the chaos cleric ranted on how the realms would soon be doomed to chaos, Quan Chi crushed his head under his boot, killing the cleric of chaos. Enraged that Havik had reneged on their deal, Quan Chi turned his ire to his Oni servants, having Kitana execute Moloch by decapitation, and as Drahmin pleaded for his life, reminding Quan Chi that he had never failed him as his master torturer, Quan Chi raged that he would trade a thousand Drahmins for one Hanzo Hasashi, and used his magic to murder Drahmin, reducing him to a skeleton.
Crushing Drahmin's bones under his heel, Quan Chi stated that the Netherrealm could not afford such failures with Shinnok still imprisoned. Regaining his composure, Quan Chi turned towards the returned revenants of Liu Kang and Kung Lao. Quan Chi explained their plan wasn't a total loss, as Shinnok's amulet was now exposed due to no longer being locked with the Kamidogu.
With both Earthrealm and Outworld on high alert after Havik's rampage, Kung Lao suggested to Quan Chi that they rely on subterfuge for the time being and turned to Shinnok's newest acolyte: D'Vorah.
Mortal Kombat X[]
Quan Chi is first seen leading an army of Netherrealm demons on an all-out assault on Raiden's Sky Temple. Quan Chi summons the revenant versions of Stryker, Sindel, and Kabal to attack Raiden and Fujin, they are able to fend off their attackers. Eventually, Shinnok arrives outside of Earthrealm's Jinsei chamber, intending to corrupt its life-force, to become the ruler of Earthrealm. However, Raiden with help from Johnny Cage successfully imprisons Shinnok inside of his own amulet, causing Quan Chi to retreat to the Netherrealm and go on the run.
Several years later, Quan Chi is confronted by Johnny Cage, Sonya Blade, and a bunch of Special Forces soldiers. Quan Chi fends them off by summoning the still undead Scorpion, Sub-Zero and Jax. Quan Chi is also nearly able to kill Johnny Cage and turn him into a revenant as well, after discovering his ancestral powers from him defeating Shinnok, but is stopped by Raiden and Sonya Blade. Sonya Blade also personally challenges Quan Chi and defeats him. As a result, which severs the link between Quan Chi and Johnny Cage, which Raiden is able to use to reverse the spell Quan Chi placed on Johnny Cage. As an unintended side effect, this also frees Scorpion, Sub-Zero, and Jax from Quan Chi's control and restores them to their human form after years of being Quan Chi's slaves. After this, Quan Chi is forced to flee into hiding having almost no resources left.
During Outworld's civil war and with Kotal Kahn keeping Shinnok's amulet, it's revealed that D'Vorah was secretly working for Quan Chi in order to get Shinnok's amulet back, and now D'Vorah is in the perfect position to do so. Unfortunately for Quan Chi, the Special Forces agents learn about this and storm Neatherealm in order to capture Quan Chi and also release the remaining Earthrealm heroes on his side. They are able to capture Quan Chi, but Hanzo and the Shirai Ryu arrives ready to kill Quan Chi, due to learning that Quan Chi was the one truly responsible for his clan and family's death. The Special Forces agents refuse to hand Quan Chi to Scorpion, however, and a fight breaks out. Hanzo and his clan are able to win and get ahold of Quan Chi. He beats Quan Chi mercilessly pushing him to a near-death state. Hanzo then prepares to kill Quan Chi, but just before he can, D'Vorah appears with Shinnok's amulet, and she throws the Amulet to Quan Chi. Just before Quan Chi is decapitated by Hanzo, he chants a spell to resurrect Shinnok.

Trivia[]
Quan Chi takes some of Shang Tsung's roles in the original games, such as resurrecting Sindel and requesting an invasion of Earthrealm.
According to dialogue between Jax Briggs, Sareena and Kenshi in Mortal Kombat X, Quan Chi needs Shinnok as his power source, and showed no signs of betraying his Master.
