~ Quan Chi to Sub-Zero after winning a round. |
The Quan Chi of Liu Kang’s timeline is one of the secondary antagonists in the 2023 video game Mortal Kombat 1, the first installment of the "New Era" in the Mortal Kombat franchise.
He is the new version of Quan Chi who resides within the timeline created by Fire God Liu Kang, having been striped of his original counterpart's powers to ensure he and Shang Tsung do not cause any more chaos. In this timeline, Quan Chi was an impoverished miner and was destined to live and die as a nobody. However, thanks to the manipulations of Titan Shang Tsung, he was given the same necromancer abilities his original counterpart had.
He's voiced by Sean T. Kirshnan.
Biography[]
Background[]
Unlike his two previous counterparts, Quan Chi, instead of being a demonic sorcerer from the Netherrealm was instead born as a Outworld miner with a miserable life, in an attempt from Fire God Liu Kang to prevent him and other villains like Shang Tsung and Shao from being a threats to the realms like they were before in their previous timelines.
Even in this state, Quan Chi is a selfish and ruthless individual, having betrayed his fellow miners to the owner when they were on strike to gain favor. At some point, he is approached by Shang Tsung, supported by his benefactor Damashi, and together they form a new Deadly Alliance to conquer both Outworld and Earthrealm. Quan Chi later learned dark magic, and formed the Brotherhood of Shadow and the Sisterhood of Shadow, both made up of Netherrealm demons and demonesses, respectively.
Mortal Kombat 1[]
Quan Chi first infiltrated Empress Sindel's court, and claimed to have prophesied that predicted that Liu Kang and Earthrealm would betray and invade Outworld. He and Shang Tsung would recruit others into their plan, such as General Shao, the Vaternian Nitara, and the Seido rebels Havik and Darrius, giving the former the ability to survive in other Realms' sunlight and Havik his powers.
After Kitana, General Shao and the royal guards arrived to Shang Tsung's false laboratory, they knocked out Kung Lao, Kenshi Takahashi and Johnny Cage after Shang Tsung made them believe they were sent by Liu Kang to prevent the sorcerer to cure Mileena and confuse Outworld by revealing her illness. After Kitana refused to believe Liu Kang would do such a thing, Quan Chi appeared through a portal and told Kitana that it was no misunderstanding but rather his "prophecy" being confirmed, before "apologizing" about arriving late to defend Mileena. When General Shao asked the sorcerer when will Earthrealm strike again, Quan Chi "anticipated" that the next attack would be soon, with Shao suggesting Kitana to act now, but the Princess replied to rather bring the General's concerns to Empress Sindel, as the latter should be in charge of deciding what to do, before leaving with Rain and Tanya carrying her unconscious sister.
After they left, Shao asked Shang Tsung what really happened here. The sorcerer replied that while the Earthrealmers indeed interrupted his treatment of Mileena, they were actually here to capture him for Liu Kang although he doesn't know the reason of it, before revelling in about the fact the Earthrealmers' interruption turned into an advantage to convince Princess Kitana of Quan Chi's false prophecy, with Quan Chi himself gloating about the inevitability of an upcoming war between Earthrealm and Outworld, only for the other sorcerer to explaining that Sindel doesn't generally favor war. General Shao added that, should Sindel resist to declare war, she will be replaced as, according to him, Outworld needs a steadfast leader, with Shang Tsung guessing that the "steadfast leader" should be Shao. As the General left, he suggested the sorcerer to kill the Earthrealmers or else they'll escape and report back to Liu Kang. Now without Shao, Quan Chi and Shang Tsung gloated more about the fact that the Earthrealmers' death will greatly increase the chances of war, before Shang Tsung reminding that their benefactor needs the realms entirely at war in order to make the conquest easier. Quan Chi remembered his suffering past when he was a low miner before their benefactor found him, saying that at first he didn't believe of a possible rise to power but nowadays, he will become even greater than he was.
At the Living Forest, he sought help from Nitara, Havik, and Darrius to power up one of his soul stealers. He received a crystal from Nitara, and while the anarchist was more sceptical, Quan Chi convinced him that by demonstrating the soul stealer and invading Earthrealm, all those would gain what they desired. However the rebellious Ashrah, along with Syzoth, Baraka, Kung Lao, Kenshi and Johnny, arrived to stop him, but Quan Chi's allies held them off as he managed to activate it. With enough souls from the forest, he created a new minion, Ermac, who he ordered to kill the heroes. However, Ashrah and Kenshi were able to defeat Ermac, and she deactivated the soul stealer by destroying the crystal, leading one of the souls to attack him, leaving him in a withered state before fainting, losing consciousness. He was then captured by the heroes so that Liu Kang interrogates him about his and Shang Tsung's plans (but not before they convinced Ashrah of not killing him).
The unconscious Quan Chi was dragged though the Sun Do parade, being dressed up in festival clothing, claiming that he was a drunken colleague. Their escape attempt was interrupted by the appearance of the Umgadi, Sun Do Constabulary and General Shao's forces, and Quan Chi awakened during the battle, briefly being knocked unconscious again by Johnny. However, the Earthrealmers and their allies were forced to flee without him, escaping back to Earthrealm.
Quan Chi managed to join his conspirators in Ying Fortress, overseeing the construction of more soul stealers. Quan assured Shang Tsung that with the aid of Damashi, the soul stealers would be completed, but were interrupted by the Lin Kuei after they infiltrated the fortress to capture him. Quan Chi and Shang Tsung battled Sub-Zero and Scorpion, but were defeated by the ninja. After the Lin Kuei were captured by General Shao, Quan Chi aided Rain with constructing the soul stealers out of gold, before they battled Scorpion, whom had escaped capture. The two sorcerers battled Scorpion, but were unable to prevent his escape. However, thanks to Sub-Zero joining with them, the Deadly Alliance were able to activate the soul stealers and empower the Dragon Army.
Shortly thereafter, a combined force of Earthrealmers and Outworlders infiltrated Ying Fortress, and Mileena briefly distracted them by pretending to defect their side. Using this distraction, the forces of Earthrealm and Outworld surrounded the Deadly Alliance and Liu Kang demanded to know who pulled their strings. Shang Tsung introduced his enemies to "Damashi", but the person who appeared instead was another Shang Tsung. This Shang Tsung revealed that he was a Titan of Time who had fought Liu Kang for the Hourglass, only for their battle to split time into two timelines with different outcomes. Titan Shang Tsung further reveals that he never intended to reward the Deadly Alliance for their service; they were merely pawns in his gambit to wipe out all life in this timeline and merge it with his own. Betrayed, the Deadly Alliance turn against Titan Shang Tsung and his minions, reluctantly battling alongside their enemies to save their timeline.
Retreating into the hills, the allies formulate a strategy. Heeding Shang Tsung's theory that there may be more than two timelines, Liu Kang and Geras travel back to the Hourglass to retrieve Liu Kang's Titan power and search for more allies. In the meantime, the other allies attack the Army and Shang Tsung's forces. The Deadly Alliance, alongside Raiden, are tasked with destroying the portals the Army needs to move between realms. The trio battle against several Dark enemies before realising Dark Shao's life force is what keeps the portals active. They kill him and close the portals for good before joining the others in fighting the Army itself. After the battle, Quan Chi and his fellow conspirators were imprisoned in Lei Chin prison.
Quan Chi would be freed from Lei Chen prison by Ermac, who required his aid due to the instability of his form. After the sorcerer repaired the damage, he attempted to put the construct under his control once more. However, Ermac fought back, using the abilities of his many souls to defeat Quan Chi and escaped. Left without allies, Quan Chi began plotting to take control of Liu Kang's Hourglass, and further his dark magic. Having reunited with the Sisterhood of Shadow, Quan Chi battled Ashrah when she came to save Sareena, but he was unable to stop her rescue. After the events of Khaos Reigns, Quan Chi requested that the Lin Kuei's current Grandmaster, Sektor, retrieve an Amulet from the Temple of the Elements in return for eliminating the Shirai Ryu, However, she did not fulfil his request, as she instead found Bi-Han, now in the form of Noob Saibot, and rescued him instead.

Quotes[]
“ | It is no misunderstanding, Princess. It is a confirmation of my prophecy. Left unchecked, Liu Kang will conquer Outworld. | „ |
~ Quan Chi's first words in Mortal Kombat 1, telling Kitana that his "prophecy" about Liu Kang's goal to betray and conquer Outworld has been confirmed after making the royal family believe Kung Lao and the others were sent to scandalize Outworld through Mileena. |
“ | Quan Chi: (to Kitana) I apologize for not arriving sooner, to defend your sister. I am glad she received her treatment. Shang Tsung: The Princess is safe, but the threat from Earthrealm remains. General Shao: Yes. Quan Chi, when do you anticipate they will strike? Quan Chi: Soon. Today's events were foretold in the final quatrains of the prophecy. General Shao: Then I am right. We must act now, Princess. Kitana: I will take your concerns to the Empress. It is for her to decide. Rain, Tanya. Assist me. |
„ |
~ Quan Chi "anticipating" the time of Liu Kang's strike in order to make Kitana believe his "betrayal." |
“ | General Shao: What truly happened here, sorcerer? Shang Tsung: That the Earthrealmers interrupted the Princess's treatment was happenstance. They were here to capture me for Liu Kang. General Shao: You? Why? Shang Tsung: That I must investigate. For now, let us revel in our good fortune. The Earthrealmers' serendipitous arrival has given us ample evidence to convince the Empress of the truth of Quan Chi's prophecy. Quan Chi: Conflict with Earthrealm is now inevitable. Shang Tsung: Not necessarily. The Empress has never been eager for conflict... General Shao: If she resists, she will be replaced. Out world needs a steadfast leader. Shang Tsung: A leader like you, perhaps? General Shao: If my realm requires it of me. Kill the Earthrealmers. They cannot report back to Liu Kang. (he leaves) Quan Chi: Ah... Their deaths will also feed the ire between realms. Shang Tsung: Two birds... one stone. Quan Chi: Our benefactor will be pleased. Shang Tsung: She needs the realms at war, not at the brink of it, in order to conquer them both. Only then will we rule at her side. Quan Chi: Before she found me, languishing in the mines, I would not have thought such a thing possible. But soon... she'll have transformed us from serfs into scions. |
„ |
~ Shang Tsung explaining to General Shao the interruption of Liu Kang's allies with Quan Chi expressing the higher possibilities of a coming war should the rest of their plans proceed as planned, as Shao expresses his desire of taking Sindel's throne to lead Outworld before leaving as he suggest the sorcerers to kill the Earthrealmers, therefore leaving Quan Chi and Shang Tsung alone gloating of their current magical status thanks to their benefactor. |
“ | I am ready for your contributions. | „ |
~ Quan Chi to Nitara, Havik & Darrius |
“ | Excellent, Nitara. | „ |
~ Quan Chi congratulating Nitara for giving him her crystal. |
“ | Quan Chi: I need yours as well. Havik: (stays silent for a while, briefly watching the crystal) Darrius and I have been thinking, sorcerer- Quan Chi: (harshly) Do not try to renegotiate, Havik. Havik: We need proof that you'll deliver. Sareena: That he's delivered for Nitara's Vaeternians is all the proof you need. Nitara: Sareena's right. Because of Quan Chi's magic, my realm's people are no longer poisoned by sunlight. We have finally escaped the shadows. Quan Chi: Rest assured. The spells you will receive will bring down Orderrealm's government. Havik: When will we have them, Quan Chi? Quan Chi: After the attack on Earthrealm... which could be called off if the soul stealer's efficacy isn't demostrated promptly. |
„ |
~ Quan Chi being confronted by Havik in terms of promises, much to the sorcerer's annoyement before managing to convince the anarchist to give the other half of the crystal. |
“ | Quan Chi:Yet again you evade capture, Ashrah. And now it appears you've found allies. Ashrah: We are joined against you, sorcerer. You won't be stealing any souls! |
„ |
~ Quan Chi confronting Ashrah and her allies. |
“ | Ashrah: What dark magic is this?! Ermac: We are Ermac. A collection of souls, bound by Quan Chi's magic. We live to obey his commands. Quan Chi: Kill them. |
„ |
~ Quan Chi creating Ermac before ordering them to kill Ashrah and her allies. |
“ | Quan Chi: I always feared you would be trouble, Ashrah. You're not compliant like your sisters. Ashrah: And now they're dead by my hand, because you sent them against me. I'll never forgive you for that, Quan Chi! |
„ |
“ | Ashrah, don't! | „ |
~ Quan Chi to Ashrah before she destroys the crystal powering the soul stealer, causing one of the souls to attack and whiter him before leaving him unconscious. |
“ | Scorpion: Anyone who draws power from the Netherrealm- Quan Chi: Is destined to be a god among men. |
„ |
“ | Though Ermac had freed me from my Lei Chin cell, I found myself no less imprisoned. I had no allies, no benefactor, and no obvious path back to power. And power is what I crave. But why should I settle for the scant abilities of someone who is an underling sorcerer? I should be the one who controls history, who bends people and events to my whim. I should control the Hourglass and wield it as the Keeper of Time. While I search the realms for the Hourglass, I further master the dark magic needed to destroy Liu Kang. My quest may take a lifetime, but it will be worth it. For when I succeed... I will achieve omnipotence. | „ |
~ Quan Chi's Mortal Kombat 1 ending. |
