~ Quan Chi in Mortal Kombat (2011). |
“ | Your position is precarious. To survive, you must submit. | „ |
~ Quan Chi in Mortal Kombat 1. |
Quan Chi is one of the main antagonists of the Mortal Kombat franchise. He is a powerful demon necromancer from the Netherrealm (Outworlder in the New Era timeline), and the founder of the Brotherhood of Shadow, the ancient demonic cult that worships the fallen elder god Shinnok, whom he frequently aids in his plans to conquer the realms.
He is infamously responsible for killing Hanzo Hasashi's family and entire the Shirai Ryu clan (as well as framing Sub-Zero for the crime), leading to the former's transformation into the undead warrior Scorpion. He is Shinnok's right-hand and the arch-nemesis of Scorpion.
In the New Era, Quan Chi was an edenian outworlder who worked in the mines until he met Damashi who taught him magic. He is the arch-nemesis of Ashrah.
He was voiced by Herman Sanchez in Mortal Kombat 4, Mortal Kombat: Deception, and Mortal Kombat: Armageddon, Nick Chinlund in Mortal Kombat: Defenders of the Realm, Ronald M. Banks for Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe to Mortal Kombat X and by Sean T. Krishnan (who has also voiced Varuna and Nishumbha in Record of Ragnarok) in Mortal Kombat 1. In live-action, he has been portrayed by Richard Divizio in Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero, Adoni Maropis in Mortal Kombat: Conquest and Michael Rogers in Mortal Kombat Legacy.
Personality[]
Regardless of timeline, Quan Chi does not care about anyone but himself, except maybe his only two allies he has in each, separate timeline (either Shang Tsung or Shinnok, but even those alliances don't last long). Always going out of his way to manipulate the odds, he only serves people for his own benefit; considering even the few people he shows loyalty to, to be a means to the end. One great example of this would be how he tricked Scorpion into thinking that Bi-Han killed his clan and family. He did this to further his own goals and to provide Shinnok an extra tool to assist him.
Appearance[]
Quan Chi is a tall, well-built man with red eyes. Among his distinct features is his completely white (grey in 3D era) skin. He is also completely bald, devoid of any hair on his head or face.
There also appears to be a chakra on his forehead. In his first appearance, he wore a heavy green uniform with spike-studded black armor and originally, with a yin-yang emblem on it, which seems regal, as he uses it for more formal gatherings. During his escape from Scorpion in the Netherrealm, he has discarded some of his clothing, leaving him with half a portion of his armor and new black gloves, his torso bare otherwise.
Later, he magically carves the inscriptions of the tomb of the Dragon King's army onto his body as somewhat becoming his tattoos. On his belt he now bears the authentic Amulet of Shinnok. The MK team seems to be fond of Quan Chi's Deadly Alliance outfit, as he retains this design in every game released following Deadly Alliance, even games that chronologically predate it.
As of Mortal Kombat X, Quan Chi sports a new outfit that combines traits of both his Mortal Kombat 4 and Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance onwards appearances. While he is still topless, he now wears an armored cuirass with spikes on his collar, reminiscent of his MK4 outfit.
Biography[]
Past[]
Not much is known about Quan Chi's past, except that he is a sorcerer able to travel between realms without being detected by the Elder Gods, which he used to his advantages to amass great powers.
At some point, Quan Chi came across the fallen Elder God Shinnok, who was being tormented by Lucifer, the ruler of Netherrealm. In exchange for power and a place at Shinnok's side, he assisted Shinnok in overthrowing his tormentor and helping him ascend to become the new ruler of the Netherrealm. Shinnok honored his deal and gave Quan Chi incredible powers, as well as a place as his right-hand sorcerer. When Shang Tsung took hold of Kung Lao's soul after he was defeated by Goro, he was able to somehow learn where Shinnok's long lost amulet was. Shang Tsung later traded this information with Quan Chi. But in return, Quan Chi would help to revive Sindel and allow Shao Kahn to take control of Earthrealm when the time came.
Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero[]
In order to get Shinnok's amulet back, he made a deal with the Lin Kuei that he would destroy their rival, the Shirai Ryu. The Lin Kuei sent their best assassin Sub-Zero in order to get the amulet back. Sub-Zero did exactly that, killing Scorpion in the process, something which Quan Chi would later use to his advantage, resurrecting Scorpion as one of his soldiers by claiming Sub-Zero killed his family and clan. Once Sub-Zero acquired the amulet, Quan Chi snatched it from Sub-Zero. Revealing his deception, he explained its origins before leaving to give the amulet back to Shinnok. Unknown to Shinnok, Quan Chi gave him a fake amulet and kept the real one for himself for his own selfish goals. Quan Chi would soon after be confronted by Sub-Zero, who had been sent by Raiden to retrieve the amulet. Quan Chi was temporarily defeated by Sub-Zero who grabbed Shinnok's fake amulet.
Mortal Kombat-Mortal Kombat 3[]
Quan Chi is never seen in the first three games, but he does play a role in them. He is the reason Scorpion is at the three tournaments, Scorpion also succeeds in getting his revenge on Sub-Zero killing him, Quan Chi uses this situation to his advantage resurrecting him as Noob Saibot. He also later helps Shao Kahn with the resurrection of Sindel, which would enable Shao Kahn to attempt to invade Earthrealm. Though Shao Kahn's invasion failed, it gave Quan Chi the opportunity to make his move.
Mortal Kombat 4[]
Quan Chi spends the following years assisting Shinnok in preparation for his grand return, as well as leading the cult known as the Brotherhood of Shadow, recruiting several useful parties, such as Reiko, Tanya, Mileena, Reptile and Baraka. Most notably, in order to defeat the younger Sub-Zero, Quan Chi was able to convince Scorpion that the younger Sub-Zero was the one that killed his family and clan. In his non canon ending, after the Army of Darkness won the battle, Quan Chi was shocked to discover Shinnok's reward was to be merely spared from his consuming of life. Quan Chi challenged the Elder God, and was able to protected by using the real Amulet, revealing his deception and proceeded to destroy Shinnok with it.
In the main version of events, Scorpion was able to defeat Sub-Zero and was ready to kill him, but Quan Chi appeared and informed Scorpion that he was the true murderer, not Sub-Zero. Quan Chi attempted to banish Scorpion to the Neatherrealm, but thinking quickly Scorpion tackled him and banished them both to the Netherrealm.
Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance[]
After getting banished to the Netherrealm, Quan Chi was tortured by Scorpion for a long time, with Scorpion was getting stronger and Quan Chi was getting weaker. He was eventually rescued by Drahmin and Moloch. Quan Chi promised to help them get out of the Netherrealm, but when he spotted a portal to Outworld, he broke his promise and left Drahmin and Moloch behind, making them angry. The portal led Quan Chi to discover the mummified army of Onaga, the former ruler of Outworld. He also realized the army was unbeatable since they were able to revive constantly. This gave Quan Chi an idea, but he would need help to put it into action.
But before he could do anything, Scorpion caught up to Quan Chi, which made him end up in fellow sorcerer Shang Tsung's garden. Shang Tsung helped Quan Chi fend off Scorpion. This gave Quan Chi a plan, and he made an offer to Shang Tsung he could not refuse. He would help Quan Chi revive Onaga's army, and he would open up a route to the heavens, providing Shang Tsung with an unlimited supply of souls. Shang Tsung accepted Quan Chi's offer, and this was the beginning of the titular "deadly alliance".
In order to ensure their victory, the alliance would need to eliminate their two greatest enemies, Shao Kahn and Liu Kang. They first went after Shao Kahn, initially pledging their loyalty falsely to him before they turned on him. Shao Kahn, outnumbered, unprepared, and weakened from his failed invasion of Earthrealm, was defeated and killed. In actuality and unbeknownst to the villains, that Shao Kahn was a clone. They next went after Liu Kang in Earthrealm's Wu Shi Academy, where Liu Kang was practicing. Shang Tsung shapeshifted into Kung Lao and then snuck up from behind and snapped Liu Kang's neck and consumed his soul.
The deadly alliance soon took over the troops of several other Mortal Kombat villains, including Kano, Drahmin and Moloch, and used them to conquer an Outworld village, constructing a new palace. when the villager Li Mei fought back against Kano, the Deadly Alliance offered her the chance to free her village by winning a tournament. Quan Chi approached the Red Dragon member Mavado, and offered him a deal so that he could eliminate the Earthrealm warrior Kenshi, in return for having Kano. But neither of the sorcerers really trusted one another, as Shang Tsung had secretly made a deal with Drahmin and Moloch. Quan Chi also had his suspicions himself. After Mavado succeeded in seemingly killing Kenshi, they betrayed Kano to him, and also betrayed Li Mei after she won the tournament, as it was a ruse that would lead to the winner having their soul transferred into one of the Army.
Eventually, the Deadly Alliance were attacked by Earthrealm's champions, led by Raiden. However the majority of them were swiftly killed, with Quan Chi himself facing Kitana and successfully killing her.
Mortal Kombat: Deception[]
In the end Raiden was the only one left to stand against them, and together the sorcerers were able to defeat him. However Quan Chi soon learned of Shang Tsung's deception. So once all their enemies were defeated, they turned against each other, and Quan Chi would be the victor. However, Quan Chi had barely any time to celebrate before the newly resurrected dragon king Onaga showed up. Onaga shrugged off all of Quan Chi's attacks so quickly, him, Shang Tsung and Raiden teamed up in order to defeat Onaga. But Onaga was too powerful and they stood no chance, so in a last-ditch attempt, Raiden blows himself up to defeat Onaga. Quan Chi is able to quickly escape, however. It's unknown how he got away, but it's likely he teleported away.
Mortal Kombat: Armageddon[]
“ | Shang Tsung, Shao Kahn, Onaga... my comrades; we are all treacherous by nature and betrayal is to be expected, but if we do not stand together, at least initially, it could mean the end of the Forces of Darkness. | „ |
~ Quan Chi in Mortal Kombat: Armageddon, assuring Shao, Tsung and Onaga that they must work together. |
Quan Chi is able to return in Mortal Kombat: Armageddon, likely with some help from Shinnok. Knowing the realms are on the brink of the apocalypse and wanting the powers of Blaze, he formed a temporary alliance with Onaga, Shang Tsung, Shao Kahn, and even Scorpion, along with many more in the Forces of Darkness. To entrap one of the participants, the half-god Taven, Quan Chi badly wounded his Dragon guardian Orion.
Quan Chi participates in the battle at the Pyramid of Argus for Blaze's power. He eventually ends up fighting Kenshi, but Quan Chi's alliance ultimately falls apart and he is thrown off the Pyramid of Argus by Shang Tsung, who was in disguise as Ermac. In his non canon ending, Quan Chi managed to absorb Blaze's abilities, and brazenly challenged the Elder Gods. The sorcerer would suffer the most ironic of fates, being transformed into his own amulet, which was sent back in time to be discovered by Shinnok in the ancient past. His remains, in the form of the amulet, would go onto be used by Shinnok and Quan Chi himself for millennia until it's destruction when Quan Chi absorbed Blaze's power, creating a time loop.
Quan Chi is shown to have made it about midway up the stairs, but he is ultimately one of many killed in Armageddon, ending this version of Quan Chi once and for all.
Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe[]
“ | Shinnok will be displeased by your inability to take Earthrealm. | „ |
~ Quan Chi's first words in Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe, speaking to Shao Kahn. |
Quan Chi is first in the game after Shao Kahn's failed attempted to conquer Earthrealm, presumably the events of the third game. Quan Chi tells Shao Kahn of Shinnok's anger at Shao Kahn's failure to conquer and merge Earthrealm. Shao Kahn then becomes outraged, something Quan Chi finds amusing. Raiden then arrives at Shao Kahn's place for breaking the rules of Mortal Kombat, by attempting to conquer Earthrealm with Mortal Kombat. Quan Chi attempts to escape through a portal, only to be knocked aside by Shao Kahn's hammer.
Quan Chi is then captured by Raiden and taken to the Elder Gods to face judgment for his many crimes, once the trial is over he is banished to the Neatherrealm. Despite his current state, he is somehow contacted by Sub-Zero during the beginning of the DC and MK universes merging. Quan Chi informs Sub-Zero about what fortress that appeared outside the Lin Kuei's headquarters was, and who the fortress belonged to. While the crisis keeps getting worse and the merging continues, Quan Chi manages to get Scorpion to bring Sub-Zero to the Netherrealm where he is imprisoned, promising Scorpion revenge for his clan and family's murder. Scorpion confronts Sub-Zero ready to avenge his family and clan, Sub-Zero tries to deny this, but Quan Chi mockingly asks who else could have done it.
While Sub-Zero and Scorpion fight, the merging of the realms continues and breaks Quan Chi out of his chains, freeing him from the Neatherrealm. Quan Chi tells Sub-Zero to inform Raiden that he will have to work with him and the Forces of Darkness to save Earthrealm from destruction due to the merging. Quan Chi then sends Sub-Zero through a portal back to Earthrealm. Quan Chi then orders Scorpion to find Kitana.
Quan Chi then gathers Shang Tsung and Baraka so they can help him, He is not seen for a while until Scorpion captures Kitana. Quan Chi then shows up and places Kitana under his control, he succeeds, but shortly after spots Shazam flying. Quan Chi, for unknown reasons, tells Shang Tsung, Baraka and Scorpion lure Shazam to the Netherrealm, where he will be weak so they will be able to kill him.
Quan Chi then arrives at Raiden's temple to ask Raiden for help and releases Kitana to show what would happen to everyone. Quan Chi, in order to convince Raiden to help, uses the last of his power to free Kitana from the combat rage, which leaves him to Raiden. This is able to convince Raiden to unite the Forces of Light and Darkness against their new common enemy.

Mortal Kombat 1[]
An alternative version of Quan Chi would join Titan Shang Tsung in destroying Liu Kang's New Era, serving as his partner during the Battle of Armageddon. Emerging through a portal on a carpet of skulls as the first of the Order of Darkness, he joined Shang Tsung at the top of the Pyramid. During the battle, they noticed the playable Final Warrior making their way up the pyramid, and together blasted a magical explosion, throwing them off balance. Readying more magic, Quan Chi and Shang Tsung were surprise attacked by their heroic counterparts, but took revenge by tearing their skeletons our of their bodies. In the end, Liu Kang and his Final Warrior confronted the Deadly Alliance, and Quan Chi took on Liu Kang. When the Fire God nearly got the better of his partner, Quan Chi managed to imprison him with a spectral snake. Quan Chi taunted the Final Warrior before battling them, but the Final Warrior managed to defeat the Titan Deadly Alliance. Now freed, Liu Kang proceeded to erase both of them for good.
In the DLC, Khaos Reigns, a version of Quan Chi who is a member of Titan Havik's Brotherhood of Khaos appears as a minor antagonist. He joins Havik's invasion of the New Era, fighting off the inhabitants so that Geras could be captured. Along with his partner Shang Tsung he battled Khameleon, and faced Sektor when she joined the fight. While they lost the battle, after Khaos Raiden blasted them into the gardens, he urged the Deadly Alliance to deal with them. In their second confrontation, Shang Tung led the battle, but they were taken out for good.
Mortal Kombat: Onslaught[]
Quan Chi appears as the main villain (alongside Shang Tsung and Shinnok) in the mobile game Mortal Kombat: Onslaught, where he at first serves Shinnok in the Netherrealm and helps him retain powerful ancient artefacts so Shinnok can attain ultimate power. However, during the game, Quan Chi instead allies with Shang Tsung and betrays Shinnok for his own ends, as Quan Chi is revealed to rather seek power than ending all life.

Powers and Abilities[]
Quan Chi is the most powerful demon sorcerer of the Netherrealm, proficient in both black magic and necromancy. After gaining the Amulet of Shinnok, he gained a variety of other powers, such as the ability to travel between realms. Like most kombatants, Quan Chi is much stronger, faster, and tougher than the average super-human.
He was able to defeat Shang Tsung who was able to almost defeat Liu Kang the first time they fought. However, he did so with great effort on his part. Before they bretrayed each other, their combined power and skill barely beat Raiden. This along with his necromantic powers make him one of Earthrealm's greatest threats. He also beat Shang Tsung after some considerable effort on his part. Only Shinnok, Shao Kahn, Shang Tsung and Delia can match Quan Chi's skills as a sorcerer.
Most of Quan Chi's necromantic attacks involve summoning skulls and skeletons, which emit an eerie green glow. He can also summon a defensive wall of skulls, as well as skeletons to do his bidding. Quan Chi's black magic shows itself in the form of his ability to create the Soulando, a large tornado like column of souls, which he can shut off at any time. As his alternate weapon fighting style, Quan Chi wields a pair of Asian broadswords. However, he never uses them during the rebooted timeline. Furthermore, since he bested Shang Tsung in combat, one can assume that he surpasses him in magical powers and skill.
Quan Chi also frequently get his hands on powerful artifacts that can enhance his own powers. Some of these artifacts are Shinnok's Amulet, the Living Weapon, Onaga's undead army, the immortal skull placed on Quan Chi's armor in MKX, his Fortress, etc.
Despite his powers, Quan Chi is nothing more than a coward. Because he sneeks no true loyalty to anyone but himself, he will do anything, even doom the realms, to avoid justice for his crimes. This led to him getting involved with beings who could easily destroy him. Thus, his cunning is also his greatest weakness as few if any, are willing to trust him. Furthermore, while he is skills are remarkable, he struggles against those who are match or even surpass him like Shinnok.
Powers[]
Divine Empowerment: In all prior timelines that have come before, Quan Chi was gifted one of the most powerful magics by Kronika, which made him the powerful sorcerer. The new version of Quan Chi was stripped of his sorcery by Liu Kang, but later regained it thanks to his benefactor.

Trivia[]
- Due to his role as one of the main antagonists in Mortal Kombat 4, Quan Chi appears in many of it's non-canon endings.
- In Reptile's and Baraka's respective endings, set after the Army of Darkness wins, Quan Chi ends up betraying them.
- In Tanya's ending, she leads Liu Kang to him and Shinnok, and they kill him as the last member of the Forces of Light.
- In Sub-Zero's ending, where he wins the fight with Scorpion, Quan Chi ambushes him, before revealing his manipulations, and is destroyed by Scorpion.
- Two of his fatalities, the Leg Rip and Neck Stretch are Ed Boon's favorite and least favorite fatalities respectively.
- According to the Konquest mode of Mortal Kombat: Armageddon, Quan Chi was the one who proposed the alliance between himself, Shang Tsung, Onaga, and Shao Kahn on the argument that they would not be able to defeat the forces of good otherwise. However, he did this under Shinnok's orders, so as to bring them to the location of Armageddon where Shinnok planed for Daegon to win.
- His non-canon ending in Mortal Kombat: Armageddon depicts Quan Chi getting so powerful to assault the Heavens, a place which is known to obliterate and destroy all evil beings who enter it, as seen in Scorpion's Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance ending. He also is given the ironic fate of becoming Shinnok's Amulet with his existence becoming a time loop.
