Quanxi's Girlfriends are a group of minor antagonists in Chainsaw Man, appearing in the International Assassin's Arc. They are a group consisted of four fiends: an unnamed stitched faced fiend, the futakuchi-onna haired fiend Pingtsi, the horned fiend, Long, and a zombie-looking fiend, Cosmo. They are the fiends that always accompanied Quanxi in their mission to kill Denji and obtain his heart.
Appearance[]
All of Quanxi's girlfriends are revealed to be fiends that accompany Quanxi in her either spare time or her mission. Pingtsi is a girl with a dark blue ponytail who wears a collared black dress with a blue hue and leggings with boots. Long appears as a girl with purple hair, horns similar to those of protagonist Power, a white turtleneck sweater, red shorts and muted red sneakers. Cosmo appears as a girl with short hair that exposes the right side of her brain, which trails down and ends with a bow shape. Cosmo has heart irises in her eyes (one of which appears to have popped out of its socket) and wears a orange shirt that exposes her midriff and blue shorts. Finally, an unnamed fiend whose appearance is described as "tsugihagi" (patched) appears as a girl with short green hair with a stitched face and wears a yellow sweater with long sleeves and a long black skirt.
Personality[]
All four girls were extremely loyal to Quanxi, often accompanying her on missions and spending their leisure time together. Not much is known about both Long and the stitched girlfriend, as they rarely spoke in most of their appearances, with the stitched one being completely silent, but Pingtsi reveals herself to be a cheerful and energetic girl who loves eating food and Cosmo appears to be an insane fiend who only speaks "Halloween!" as her only word only to be revealed that she is an extremely intelligent fiend with an affable and happy-go-lucky personality that guards the Akashic Records stored in her own mind.
Biography[]
International Assassin's Arc[]
They were introduced in Chapter 54 alongside their girlfriend, Quanxi. When asked by one of the Chinese Military members about the rewards that they wanted to have as Quanxi was tasked to kill Denji and take his heart for the Chinese government, Pingtsi herself requested Quanxi to give her donuts, Long wanted blood and Cosmo mostly screamed Halloween. This resulted on Quanxi requesting the Chinese government to give them basic education and human rights which resulted on them considering her offer if she's successful on her mission.
During their trip to Japan, they accidentally bumped into someone else's car and when the person complained about it Cosmo then hypnotizes him which resulted on said person saying nothing but "Halloween!" before he went away. As they encountered a Conveyor Belt Sushi Restaurant, Pingsti becomes excited and then suggested Quanxi and the rest of her girlfriends to eat there with Halloween annoyed the waiter a bit with her tic and Pingtsi telling Quanxi about her knowledge of fish in which Quanxi dismissed it so that she could eat in peace.
Taking a break in a nearby hotel as she decided to take a break from her job, Quanxi was warned by Pingtsi about the existence of Santa Claus in the department store when he attacked Denji and his companions that were trapped in there. This resulted on Quanxi postponing their mission again so that her girlfriends are also getting a well-deserved rest. As Quanxi and her girlfriends make their move, they appeared in the back alley of the Department Store as Quanxi took care of the dolls and the devil hunters by killing them in a swift manner while Pingtsi also helped Quanxi to finish her job.
After the massacre, Cosmo ended up separating herself from the group despite Pingtsi warning her not to do so. Encountering Quanxi's former partner, Kishibe, the girlfriends that attempt to gobble him up as Pingtsi underestimated Kishibe by founding him not special despite knowing he has been in contract with dangerous devils. This resulted on both Long and Pingtsi being captured while Cosmo and the stitched fiend ran away from trouble.
Seeing her girlfriends being taken as a hostage by Kishibe and Denji, Quanxi decides to have a little chat with him before one of the Three Brothers, Aldo, decides to ambush Denji which caused Denji being pinned on the ground and was taken as a hostage by Long while Power tries to take Pingtsi as a hostage in order to release Denji in which Quanxi responded by requesting Pingtsi freedom as she doesn't want to fight with Power. Fortunately, Denji was rescued by the Shark Devil, Beam, as they attempted to run away from trouble.
Unfortunately however, all of the people in the Department Store including Quanxi and her two girlfriends were dragged into Hell because of the real Santa Claus's attempting to sacrificing her new puppet and Denji to gain more ultimate power. As they arrived in Hell, Pingtsi also warns Quanxi and the rest of the devil hunters about the existence of a rather formidable primal devil in hell that was watching them and they managed to attract their hostility which resulted on them meeting their impending doom. The devil itself is revealed to be the Darkness Devil as when he came, the devil then brutally maims both Quanxi and her girlfriends after fighting with them.
As Quanxi managed to return to the real world thanks to Makima, her silent girlfriend, notices Quanxi's head as she carries it and pulls an arrow out of Quanxi's right eye socket while dropping it into the pile of Santa Claus's dolls which transforms Quanxi into a Crossbow Devil in order to help Denji to defeat Santa Claus who was transformed into a more eldritch form after acquiring a power from her deal with Darkness Devil while Quanxi herself held a grudge against Santa Claus for what she had done to her girlfriends.
In the end, after Santa Claus was defeated, Quanxi then orders Cosmo to trap her in an Akashic Records and gave her a huge knowledge of the universe which turns Santa Claus into nothing but a pathetic wreck that could only scream "Halloween" as a Karmic Punishment. As Quanxi and her girlfriends encountered Makima who attempts to give them punishment, Quanxi attempts to surrender and requesting her girlfriends to be spared. However, in the end, Makima decides to decapitate Quanxi and the rest of her girlfriends ruthlessly, killing them.
Trivia[]
- While the stitched fiend is often unofficially called "Tsugihagi" she has no confirmed name. The term “Tsugihagi” is just a word meant to refer to her appearance and other characters on the polls were given other “names” often based on how they looked before their canon names were actually revealed. The other fiends of the group had these “names” (Pingtsi was Futakuchi, Cosmo was Zonbi and Long was Tsuonari) as well before they were actually said in the manga.
- There has been some misconceptions about the nature of these girls. As fiends, they are devils who possess the corpses of unknown women and not the other way around. They aren’t women with contracts either. All of them are the devils in possession of these women and not the human women themselves as the actual human women are dead and not conscious. Who the actual human women were remain unknown. The true forms of the devils and what types of devils they are are never revealed, except for the name of the Cosmos Devil.
- There is a bit of a Mandela effect that the stitched nameless fiend, whose appearance is described as ”Tsugihagi”, has canonical healing powers. She is ironically the only fiend to not show an ability and this misconception comes from how she pulled the hybrid trigger on Quanxi to revive her, which is a basic part of all hybrid’s biology and not a special ability on her part. What may add to the confusion is her stitched appearance and stitches are used to heal but a devil’s appearance isn’t always related to their type or abilities so her powers and type remain very unknown.
- Long is often stated by fans to “canonically” be the Dragon Fiend because of her name being the Chinese word for Dragon and ability to breathe fire. While it is possible, it is never confirmed what type she is and Devils can come up with names that don’t match with their conceptual name and she could still be any devil with a fire ability. Alternatively people will say she is the Fire Fiend or some flame based fiend but these aren’t confirmed either and having fire powers doesn’t have to be limited to a fire related devil. When she was first introduced many thought she was another Blood Fiend but this should have already been debunked as it was already established only one conceptual “name” can apply to a singular devil.
- Similar to the more major fiend character Power, there have been debates on these fiend characters' ages. Officially they have no confirmed age as it is unknown what ages the Devils are and, just like Power, as they use corpses as flesh puppets the dead humans they possess would have separate ages from the Devils, all of which are unknown, and their human hosts aren't willing participants in their several acts either way given how they are lifeless and merely serve as skin suits for the demons.
- Cosmo tends to be the most popular out of the group of fiends, as she is one of the 2/4 who is given a notable character and personality as well as having the most unique power. Pingtsi comes to a close second, and she was originally the most popular before Cosmo’s nature was revealed, but her personality is very similar to Cosmo’s, as both are genki girls who seem dumb at first but are later revealed to be smart and both have knowledge based powers, with Pingtsi’s essentially being a more downplayed version of Cosmo’s but in the form of a more common knowledge based power as it is essentiality just clairvoyancy, specifically for her where she receives information and says it out loud, which is more often seen in fiction compared to Cosmo’s infinite universal knowledge and granting that knowledge in the form of an attack.
- Cosmo’s power often gets confused for being “fear of the unknown” or something related to it, but it is the exact opposite as her fear relates to gaining too much knowledge of everything, essentially being an infinite information overload until the brain breaks, and relates to the theme in the arc she appears in of having “ignorance is bliss” which would make the unknown very preferable in this instance.
- While the answer of the creator just wanting to make her a fiend for the sake of it is a simple and easy one, why she actually is a fiend story wise causes narrative issues. Given how the nature of Fiends is a devil who possesses a human corpse, but gets weakened as a result, as a last resort to survive in their current incarnation, it seems questionable and a bit of a plot hole how Cosmo is a fiend. As aside from being omniscient, Cosmo’s true inner personality is shown to be very neutral and indifferent and does not care about death and fully accepts it as something natural. Unlike most Devils she would not have to worry about losing her memories every time she reincarnates given the nature of her abilities. It also would have made it more effective if she was at her full power, rather than become a fiend which causes her to have way more limitations as it is implicated that the Cosmos Fiend can only think clearly and act intelligently when in her own mind or using her attack. So unless the original Devil was nonchalant about being turned into a fiend by an outside force and/or was too weak to do anything about being put into a dead human body, for whatever reason, it remains questionable as to why she would become a fiend as it causes more questions/problems than answers.
- There have been some people who feel like Cosmo’s original intention wasn’t to be an omniscient being and that she was originally going to be something else with “Halloween” originally being either just a gag or alluding to something else that later got changed into having the knowledge of the universe because it seems “cooler” or because it was reworked to fit in with the themes of ignorance in the arc. While it can be possible that it wasn’t planned out from the beginning, it still could very well be that, because of the arc’s theme, it was something planned for Cosmo originally or at least early on. But it could remain unknown as technically there isn’t anything that confirms or denies if Cosmo’s ability was or wasn’t originally planned.
- Cosmo’s design, as well as constant shouting of the word “Halloween!” gives the false impression that she is something zombie related or something similar. After her reveal on what type of Devil she is, her design seems closer to represent how her brain is exposed due to such vast knowledge. It can be a bit of a trope in media, especially sci-fi, for many “smart” characters to have an exposed brain to reflect on their knowledge or intelligence.
- The additional popped out eye is likely because her brain is so huge (either symbolically or literally) that it even causes one of her eyes to pop out. Her popped out eye seems to be retractable so another reason is that this could have less of a deeper meaning and is just adding onto the zombie facade.
- It is heavily implied that the target needs to copy Cosmo saying “Halloween” after she says it, and possibly for there to be some kind of direct focus, in order to work.
- The Cosmos’ Devil’s power is very similar to the Jujutsu Kaisen character Gojo Satoru’s Domain Expansion ability called Infinite/Unlimited Void. While Cosmo’s power is more simplified and less powerful, Gojo’s ability is more powerful, massive in scale, easier to activate and is more complex as it makes the target know, sense, see and feel everything and nothing at the same time and puts them into a catatonic and incapacitated state. However, according to the mangaka but not explicitly stated in the story, it is actually explained that the ability is just that the target is having their thoughts repeated infinite times causing the illusion of having infinite knowledge and even then the damaging effects are still the same.
- When it comes to the trivia for the second most popular, Pingtsi:
- She resembles a Japanese yokai called a futakuchi-onna. There are different stories about this type of monster but the most common ones are about women inflicted by a curse due to her lack of eating, either caused by things such as eating disorders or other strange things related to eating, and a second mouth growing on the back of her head that would eat twice as more than the woman ever did. This is meant to represent the “mouth that never was there”.
- Her request for 100 donuts is a reflection of the the common food related trait of the monster. It can also be reflective of how she is the monster possessing the human woman’s body and not the actual human woman herself.
- It is also possible her resemblance to the futakuchi-onna, literally meaning two mouthed woman, could be a joke on how she is a “blabbermouth” who talks a lot and that she says so many things she literally has “two mouths.”
- Just because she resembles the monster does not mean her devil is of this monster. Cosmo was meant to resemble a zombie but clearly wasn’t the Zombie Devil. Her Chinese origin could make this more unlikely, as compared to more universally known monsters like ghosts and zombies, the yokai is a very specifically Japanese one and while not obscure, it isn’t a very popular yokai either especially outside of Japan.
- Her name is a Chinese name that means “bamboo bush” or “green folding screen”. It is an average Chinese name causing further vagueness to her devil type.
