The Quarks are the supporting antagonists of the Doctor Who serial The Dominators. They are the robotic servants of the Dominators, aiding them on their conquests. While they only made one televised appearance, the Quarks have featured in other media, notably as major antagonists independent of their masters in the 1960s TV Comics.

History[]

The Quarks were the robotic servant of the Dominators, diminutive in size but with powerful built-in weaponry. They accompanied Dominators Rago and Toba to Dulkis, which the two Dominators intended to turn into radioactive fuel. The Quarks killed a number of the native Dulcians and acted as guards for those the Dominators had enslaved. They had a tendency to run out of power, resulting in the Dominators having to rely on humanoid slaves. The Dominators' plans were disrupted by the intervention of the Second Doctor, Jamie and Zoe. Many of the Quarks were destroyed by guerilla actions by Jamie and the Dulcian Cully, and the remainder were destroyed when the Doctor placed the Dominators' seed device aboard their spaceship as it took off.

The Quarks would later serve as the main antagonists of the TV Comic comic strip, debuting in the story "Invasion of the Quarks", where they again encountered the Second Doctor and Jamie during an attempted invasion of Earth. This prompted them to make several attempts to eliminate the Doctor (and initially Jamie) in revenge, including setting giant wasps on them, forcing the natives of a jungle planet to attack them, gaining control of labour-saving robots the Doctor had designed and taking part in the same car race as the Doctor. They made their final appearance in the title in "The Duelists", where they ended up competing against the Doctor in a series of deadly games organised by a colony of sadistic gentlemen.

Both the Doctor Who Magazine back-up strip "The Fires Down Below" and the Big Finish audio "Power of the Dominators" featured UNIT thwarting invasions of present day Earth by the Dominators and the Quarks. The Quarks assisted the Dominators with another invasion of Earth, in the 1950s, in the IDW comic strip "Quiet on the Set", which was defeated by the Tenth Doctor.

Trivia[]

The Quarks were portrayed by John Hicks, Gary Smith and Freddie Wilson, and voiced by Sheila Grant. Freddie Wilson reprised the role for a cameo in "The War Games", where a Quark is one of the enemies the Doctor shows as examples of his positive interference at his trial.
In the 2024 Doctor Who: The Fourth Doctor Adventures podcast episode Dominant Species, The Quarks were voiced by Indra Ové, Polly Kemp and Rosalyn Landor, who also voiced Bijou Dubois in Broken Sword 5: The Serpent's Curse.
The Monster Files video on the Vespiform, a race of giant wasps, mentions rumours of a war between "Quark rebels" and Vespiform, giving an explanation as to why the Quarks are independent from the Dominators in the TV Comics, and retroactively adding the possibility that the Vespiform are the Giant Wasps seen in the comic.
