Queen Nehelenia is the secondary antagonist of the Sailor Moon franchise. She is the self-titled queen of Dead Moon kingdom and an avatar of Chaos. She serves as the main antagonist of the "Dead Moon" arc and its film adaptation Sailor Moon: Eternal.
She was voiced by Nanao in the movie in Japanese and Laura Post in the English dub.
Appearance[]
Queen Nehelenia is an exceptionally lovely, youthful, graceful and beautiful woman with white skin with pointed ears and extremely long, flowing, wavy dark blue hair. Her hair is mostly down apart from two buns and two ponytails coming from those buns. Her fringe is similar to Usagi's except it is sharper and she has slim light blue eyes with slit-shaped pupils. Her dress is darker green with puffy sleeves below her shoulders and longer skin-tight sleeves going down to her wrists, her top only covers her breasts and the skirt is covered by a beige overskirt. She has a lavender cape that goes down to the floor and wears gold and black bracelets and a necklace with a similar style. Her earrings and headpiece consist of three silver moons (one being golden) and she wears a black circular gem as a crown. She was also considered the loveliest, fairest and most beautiful being in the Dead Moon Circus.
Character design sheets show that Queen Nehelenia has a spiderweb pattern on the back of her cloak. It also shows she has a long black bow on the back of her dress and she wears black high heeled sandals with a design similar to her crown on them. This may not be seen so easily in the anime due to her long dress and cloak.
Biography[]
Manga[]
Originating from the dark center of the moon, Nehelenia is chronologically first known spawn of Chaos. She made her presence known in Silver Millennium during celebration of Princess Serenity's birth, offering Queen Serenity a co-existence between them while insisting herself to be the rightful ruler of the Moon Kingdom. The confrontation results in Queen Serenity sealing Nehelenia away in a mirror, with Nehelenia placing a curse that Princess Serenity would die before ever ascending the throne of the Moon Kingdom.
Nehelenia would remain within the mirror while her "sister" Queen Metalia would carry out her curse, creating her avatar Zirconia to serve her in her plan to take over Earth. Long after corrupting the resting Sailor Quartet to serve her as the Amazoness Quartet, Nehelenia orchestrates an attack on the realm of Elysion and inflict a curse on it that afflicts the captive high priest Helios and Mamoru Chiba. Using a solar eclipse to bring the Dead Moon Circus to the surface, Nelehenia relayed her command to Zirconia to deal with the Sailor Guardians.
During battles with the Amazoness Quartet and their minions, Usagi's friends obtained their Sailor Crystals with the help of Artemis, Phobos and Deimos, and the Sailor Power Guardians. At the same time, Hotaru Tomoe rapidly grew while reawakening as Sailor Saturn with her memories restore, restoring the Outer Guardians' powers to help. Once the Sailor Guardians had managed to defeat all of the Dead Moon's minions, they finally discovered that the Golden Crystal was hidden inside Mamoru's body, much as the Silver Crystal was within Usagi's.
While Sailor Moon fought Nehelenia in her mirror, the Sailor Guardians damaged the mirror from outside, injuring her and releasing Sailor Moon, Chibi Moon, and Saturn, forcing the Dead Moon Circus to retreat to Elysion. The Sailor Guardians then went to confront Nehelenia in Elysion, where she attempted to take the Silver Crystal one last time. The power of the Silver Crystal, combined with that of the newly awakened Golden Crystal, bound together by the love of Sailor Moon between Tuxedo Mask, prevented this yet again. Nehelenia is then defeated by Eternal Sailor Moon using the joined powers of her guardians, reverting to her into true Zirconia-like form before she and the mirror dissolve into dust. The remains of the mirror are then sent back into the eclipse by Usagi and Mamoru as Neo Queen Serenity and King Endymion.

Powers and Abilities[]
Queen Nehelenia can shoot energy waves of darkness, and also spiderlike threads. She is also impervious to most attacks. She can spawn a clone of herself in the form of Zirconia.
In the manga, she was skilled in crafting curses, as well as being a strong force of darkness. She cursed Elysion, which was only protected by Helios until the eclipse occurred, which would infect Elysion, Helios, Tuxedo Mask, the Earth, and eventually Sailor Moon. She was capable of placing a prophecy of death on the infant Princess Serenity in the Silver Millennium, which was fulfilled by the Dark Kingdom. She was also able to corrupt the four Sailor Quartet while they were in slumber, turning them into her Amazoness Quartet.
She was able to create an illusion around Earth that the solar eclipse had ended shortly after her arrival, when in fact the eclipse remained, casting darkness on the Earth, until she was finally defeated.

Trivia[]
- Queen Nehelenia was named after the ancient goddess Nehalennia.
- Queen Nehelenia shares some similarities to other characters in fairy tales: Being a evil sorceress who inflicted a newborn princess with a death curse (referring to it as a gift) as an uninvited guest crashing the celebration of said child's birth like the evil fairy from the tale, Sleeping Beauty. Her vanity, possession of a magic mirror, and hag form were similar to various versions of the Evil Queen from Snow White and the Seven Dwarves.
- Whilst the manga/Sailor Moon Eternal version is completely irredeemable with nothing preventing that, however, her '90s Anime version redeemed herself, making her a Scapegoat because she is tragic, shows insecurities and her death portrayed her more sympathetically.
