Queen Regina is the main antagonist of the 2019 South Korean animated Movie, Red Shoes and the Seven Dwarfs. Essentially the Queen of one of the kingdoms in the Fairytale Island, Regina seemingly appears as an unassuming woman that married a king known as King White during his daughter’s 14th birthday.
Although both Regina and White were seemingly having a normal marriage at first, it was then revealed that she is a Wicked Witch obsessed with eternal youth and beauty. This is due to the fact that the King had been growing suspicious towards Regina and the mirror that she brought and also due to the fact that the people of the castle began to go missing after Regina marries the king. It was also revealed that Regina had been turning people into trees in order to produce magical red shoes that made her younger.
After her father’s disappearance thanks to Queen Regina's machination, Snow White then attempts to find her father no matter what it takes. However, in turn, Snow White ended up wearing the red shoes that Regina wants to wear which not only turned her into a beautiful woman, but also getting hunted by Regina and her subordinates.
She is portrayed by Gina Gershon who is best known as Catwoman from The Batman, Melanie Hawkins in Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Gladys Jones in Riverdale.
Appearance[]
Normally, Queen Regina has an aged appearance, having gained pronounced features since her youth. While she retains her green eyes, her short, pointed nose, and hairstyle (a short, well-kept haircut with long bangs, with one partially covering her right eye), Regina has since resorted to makeup to help cover her wrinkled face and faded eyebrows, wearing purple eye shadow and red lipstick on her face. For clothing, she wears a yellow crown with black gems embedded into it on her head, with a black sleeved dress adorned with images of gray (yellow, in concept art) leaves covering her body. The "leaves" naturally extent into a large collar at the top of her dress, while they settle at the bottom into a solid color. She also has a tattoo of an identical design on her torso (being yellow in both concept art and the film) and fingernails painted with black dye, while she wears a simplistic yellow cloak when disguised. Once she regains her youth, it is revealed that Regina possessed bright red hair during her youth.
Personality[]
Being based on the Wicked Queen from the Snow White tales, Queen Regina’s defining personality can be described as two things: Vain and obsessed. This is due to the fact that she will do anything to obtain eternal beauty in order to stay young forever. To that end, she is willing to sacrifice anyone after she usurps the throne by marrying one of the kings in the Fairytale Island, showing her unfettered thirst to get whatever she wants. This can be shown where she ended up sacrificing tons of people by converting them into becoming a tree so that she could harvest the red shoes from them. It is also shown she is also rather opportunistic and manipulative as well. Her opportunistic persona can be shown where she uses the marriage of King White so that she could use her subject for nefarious ends. In addition, her manipulative skills can be shown where she attempts to use Prince Average as a pawn by telling him that she could get a beautiful girl during his birthday party. She is also shown using her manipulative tactics so that she could lure Snow White to give her the Red Shoes that she wanted. The Queen is also shown to be a sardonic person as this can be shown where she mocked Snow White about her loyalty towards her father and was rather annoyed by it. In addition, she is also shown to be a rather impatient person as when Prince Average wanted to fight against the Fearless Seven tomorrow, Regina decided to curse both him and his guards to become a wooden golem so that they could capture both Snow White and one of the Fearless Seven members, Merlin, for the sake of efficiency in order to get what she wants.
Biography[]
Not much is known about Queen Regina as she is a woman shrouded in mystery. However, during Snow White’s 14th birthday, she was brought by the castle guards in front of King White and was initially being labelled as a witch. Although being labeled as a witch at first, the king ended up being enamored by her beauty and decided to marry her, decrying people’s suspicions of her being a witch. Despite their seemingly perfect marriage, King White became suspicious of Regina after she brought a strange mirror into the castle. Afterwards, several people in the castle went missing as time went by. It was then revealed that Regina had turned several missing people into a magical tree as the tree can bear an apple-like fruit that could turn into red shoes. Once someone wears those shoes, they will become an absurdly beautiful and youthful person.
At the same time, it will also make the tree withered once the third bell chimes. Due to the fact that she was revealed to be an old crone in terms of her true form, Regina aims for eternal beauty using the magical tree. In addition, despite being responsible for the disappearance of several people, it was revealed that Regina also turned three innocent children into nothing but her own slaves, using the magic apple to turn them into three little bears to do her own bidding. Eventually, after the king discovered the truth about Regina, she then decided to enthrall him by eating the apple which in turn, transformed him into a wooden bunny that ended up being exiled to the forest in the Fairytale Island.
After the king's transformation and exile, Regina continues her reign of terror by continuing turning people into trees so that she could harvest the red shoes from them. However, recent efforts of her attaining eternal beauty ended up in vain. Evidence of Regina’s failed attempts can be shown in the form of a huge pile of withering shoes that were scattered in the same location where the tree was stored. After the king went missing, Snow White, who grew into a plump-ish yet beautiful woman on the inside, then decided to sneak into the place where the tree was stored in order to find out about the disappearance of her father. Infiltrating the place, she then found her father’s diary who then requested Snow White to find the warriors of the Fairytale Island known as the Fearless Seven in order to stop Regina’s reign of terror once and for all. However, after reading her father's diary, Snow White then became enamored after seeing the magical apple tree blossoming. Taking the fruit from the magical tree, Snow White then ended up using the shoes which turned her from a plump-ish woman into somewhat of a beautiful woman befitting to society’s standards of beauty.
After Regina saw Snow White snooping at the tree room and was unable to recognize her due to her transformation, Regina then ordered the three little bears to capture her while also using her chlorokinetic power to capture Snow White. In the end, due to the three little bear’s incompetence, Snow White ended up escaping from Regina’s clutches with a magic broom while the tree ended up wilting much to Regina’s dismay. Seeking help from her own snarky, hard-to-cooperate Magical Mirror, the latter then advises Regina to recruit someone that could help her to retrieve her shoes back. It was then revealed that the person the magic mirror suggested to her was none other than Prince Average, an unpopular, spoiled brat that got rejected by all of the princesses in the Fairytale Island. Seeing her pleas, Regina then uses this as an opportunity to make him do her bidding by manipulating his weaknesses. At the same time, Regina also orders the bears to distribute several posters of the transformed Snow White in every town, village, valley and kingdom in order to find and capture her.
After Snow White escaped from the castle, she then crash landed near the Fearless Seven’s hideout, the Risky Rock. Meeting with the Fearless Seven, it was revealed that they were cursed as green-skinned dwarves after some of them accidentally attacked a princess whom they mistaken as a witch due to her seemingly hideous appearance. To undo the curse, they need to kiss the most beautiful woman in the whole Fairytale Island. As Snow White changes her name to Red Shoes to gain their affection more easily, all of the Fearless Seven members then decided to use this as an opportunity to date Snow White so that they could kiss her in order to return to their old form. After forming a bond with them, some of the members of the Fearless Seven such as the de-facto leader, Merlin, and the intelligent muscle Arthur, then decided to go to the city together with Snow White in order to find Snow White’s father.
It was also revealed that beforehand, Merlin ended up befriending the wooden bunny that Snow White initially thought was her father before going to the city, not knowing that it was the exiled King White in the first place. At first, things went seemingly smoothly during Snow White and her companions’ exploration in the city. However, it was revealed that Snow White was also a wanted criminal thanks to Regina manipulating Prince Average to do her bidding so that Prince Average could invite her to his birthday party. As a result, Prince Average’s bodyguards then attempt to apprehend Snow White once they manage to spot her.
Fortunately, both Snow White and her companions manage to escape from trouble. Despite this, the poster of Snow White’s missing father that she holds accidentally ended up in the guard’s possession when she and her companions attempted to run away. After escaping from the guard’s clutches, Merlin then decided to draw Snow White’s father in a flower bed so that the people who seemingly know Snow White’s father could contact them at Risky Rock. Unfortunately, the guards manage to find the dwarves hideout after seeing the drawn flower bed and comparing it to the poster they had got.
After managing to find out where Snow White and the Fearless Seven were hiding, Prince Average and his soldiers then surround their hideout and attempt to capture Snow White for his own. This leads into a gruelling fight between the Fearless Seven and Snow White against the Prince and his soldiers. After the gruelling fight, the prince and his soldiers then decided to retreat, making a promise that they will return again around Thursday. However, after Prince Average and his cohorts return to his castle, Queen Regina then confronts them during the stormy night. Despite his insistence on returning on Thursday, Regina then decided to give Prince Average and his guards some apples and ordered them to eat it, claiming that what’s bad for her will be bad for Prince Average as well while also revealing her impatient nature, knowing that she has no time. Having no choice, Average and his guards decided to eat the apple Regina gave to them. This resulted in them turning into wooden golems that Regina could control to get her shoes back from Snow White.
In the meantime, as Merlin and Snow White continue to search for her father by spreading several posters using the wooden mech made by another Fearless Seven member, Pino, Noki and Kio, they end up crash-landed near the lake. After they crash-landed, Merlin decided to use this as an opportunity to kiss Snow White when they were alone. Despite kissing each other, Merlin was unable to turn back to his normal form. To make matters worse, the golems of Prince Average and his guards then manage to ambush them. After several gruelling fights, Merlin manages to get an advantage against Prince Average and his guards and seemingly saves Snow White. However, Prince Average then decided to bring Merlin down to a lake. This causes Snow White to have no choice but to save him.
After diving into the lake in order to save Merlin, Snow White’s shoes manage to take off as she reverts back to her original form, using her body to save Merlin while bringing him ashore during the night. Learning about Snow White’s original form and how comfortable she is in her own original body, Merlin then suddenly has a realization and reflection of himself and ends up learning his lesson that inner beauty comes from the inside. However, thanks to the fact that Snow White returned back to her old form, Queen Regina manages to see what happened through the magic mirror and then devises a devious plan to obtain the Red Shoes from Snow White.
During the night, Regina then teleports to a place where Merlin and Snow White were staying while also disguising herself as Merlin, trying to manipulate Snow White to give the shoes back to her. Seeing the fact that the shoes were unable to be taken off despite the previous incident at the lake, Regina then decided to give Snow White an apple as a contingency plan. However, when Snow White attempts to eat the apple, she then sees two Merlins being together at the same time. Being caught red handed, Regina then turns herself into her true form and kidnaps Snow White, bringing her to her castle.
Afterwards, Regina then ties Snow White to the tree room using her chlorokinetic powers and forces Snow White to eat the apple under the pretense that Snow White would get the freedom she wants. When Snow White asked Regina about the father, Regina mocked her about how loyal she is towards her father. As a result, Regina decided to shift her gears by promising Snow White to give the information about her father's whereabouts if she eats the apple. Knowing that this was a trap and refusing to yield, Regina then decided to go with a different approach. Knowing that Merlin wanted to save Snow White alongside the bunny, Regina decided to capture Merlin and use him as a hostage. After seeing what happened, Snow White has no choice but to eat the apple to let Merlin go.
However, this ended up turning her into a tree. Fortunately, despite Regina seemingly coming close to winning by obtaining what she wants, the Fearless Seven, the Three Little Bears and the giant bunny decided to save both Merlin and Snow White with one of them managing to smash the Magic Mirror to pieces. Merlin, who ended up going to confront Queen Regina on his own, decided to sacrifice Regina knowing that he has the opportunity to break the curse. In the end, Merlin decided to drag Regina down to the pits of the castle while using his electric spell as a giant sacrifice, killing the vain and evil Queen once and for all.
With Regina dead, the giant roots that have been engulfing the castle have disappeared and the people that were cursed by Regina including the King and the three children went back to normal. However, despite the sacrifice, Merlin ended up being saved by Pino, Noki and Kio as Snow White decided to kiss him in her original body. This in turn resulted in Merlin turning back into his original form. In the end, both Merlin and Snow White married together and lived happily ever after with Merlin learning that inner beauty comes from the inside instead of the outside.

- Some of her mannerisms and design are essentially based on Mother Gothel from Tangled movie to a certain extent. Their similarities can be shown through this tumblr post. This is due to the fact that the Creative Director of the Movie, Jin Kim, also worked for Tangled and also did the character design of Mother Gothel.
