Queen Xanxia

Queen Xanxia is the main antagonist of the Doctor Who story "The Pirate Planet".

Her nurse form was portrayed by Rosalind Lloyd. Her original form was played uncredited by the late Vi Delmar.

Biography[]

Queen Xanxia was the ruler of the planet Zanak. She had once ruled the planet openly, leading them in galactic wars which reduced the planet's population to a few nomadic tribes and settlements, and lived for hundreds of years. By the time of the Doctor's visit, the Captain of Zanak was believed to be the ruler, but Xanxia continued to rule behind the scenes. Years earlier, she had rebuilt the Captain as a cyborg, maintaining the control box for his machine parts. She then had him construct time dams which kept her aged body in suspended animation in the last seconds of life, and transform Zanak into a hollow planet which could materialise around other worlds and crush them, plundering their mineral wealth and generating the energy to power the time dams. Finally, she used a cell projector to create a new younger body for herself, controlled mentally from her real body, and observed events while posing as the Captain's nurse.

Although she mainly remained silent at the Captain's side in company, she occasionally intervened, such as stopping him from killing Romana when it became clear she had knowledge of time travel. She also wanted the Doctor interrogated. As a rebellion sprung up against them, the nurse agreed with the Captain's plan to make the Doctor walk a plank from the bridge and send him to his death, but the Doctor avoided the fate by using the cell projector to use an image of himself as a decoy. He had realised Xanxia's true nature on discovering the time dams and her real body and tried to turn the nurse off but she revealed she was now nearly full corporeal.

The Captain and his first officer, Mister Fibuli, made plans to materialise Zanak around Earth in order to mine its quartz reserves. The Doctor attempted to convince Xanxia that her plan was doomed to fail: Her new form would remain dependent on her old body and there wasn't enough energy in the universe to power the time dams indefinitely. She refused to listen however. The Doctor fled the bridge and he and Romana protected Earth by materialising the TARDIS in the same spot Zanak was trying to materialise. The impasse ended when the psychic Mentiads managed to telekinetically smash Zanak's engines, causing the bridge controls to explode and kill Fibuli.

The Doctor and Romana arrived back on the bridge as the Captain planned to use the energy in his trophy room of shrunken planets to restart time within the time dams and kill Xanxia's aged body. Before he could do so, Xanxia killed him by detonating his machine parts. She then turned on the Doctor and Romana, intending to shoot them, but at that point, the rebels arrived and one of them, Kimus, fired on Xanxia, destroying her nurse body. The real Xanxia body subsequently died when the Doctor and the Mentiads detonated explosives which blew up the bridge and the time dams.
