Lenaia, also known as the Queen of Smiles, is a supporting antagonist and boss in Salt and Sanctuary.
Biography[]
Alongside her husband Adnan, Lenaia was once a powerful and beloved queen who ruled over the kingdom of Liven. Following Adnan's death, Lenaia fell into a deep depression. During her grief, she was gifted with the Black Widow, a sword carried down from Gandra the Great that haunts its owners with the thoughts of those slain by it.
From the Black Widow, Lenaia was corrupted by its influences, driven paranoid by numerous ideas that she feared could've ended her position as queen. For each new phobia she gained, a wave of tantrums, jailings, banishments, and executions followed, known as the Reign of Blood. As her madness grew, Lenaia hanged the corpses of her victims around her kingdom, cutting their faces to give them permanent smiles. Eventually, her subjects turned against her and took their revenge by giving her the "widest smile" of all by removing her lower jaw. Now referred to as the Queen of Smiles, she still lurks within her palace searching for more victims to mutilate.
The player encounters the queen in the Village of Smiles, not far left from "The Three" sanctuary. She is weak to holy attacks but resistant to poison. She attacks using her Swords of Reign, dashing at the player to attack them or performing a combo when close. She can also summon eight swords around her that fire out in a random direction, following it up with a spinning dash after half of her health is depleted. As she loses health, she becomes slightly faster in her combos. Once her health is fully depleted, all that remains of the monster that was once Lenaia is a single ear.

- The Queen of Smiles' ear can be transmuted with any Greatsword and Amber Idol to become the Black Widow.
- Defeating the Queen of Smiles unlocks "The Village" achievement.
- Several of the Queen of Smiles' phobias included cats (ailurophobia), twins (haphephobia), gourds (cucurbitophobia), seafoam green (prasinophobia), and the number 14 (triskaidekaphobia).
