Do not touch me! I am, and shall remain, Queen of the Shadowkhan!
~ Jade Chan having completed her transformation into the Queen of the Shadowkhan.

The Queen of the Shadowkhan is a one-shot villain in the animated series Jackie Chan Adventures. She is a corrupted version of Jackie's niece, Jade Chan. After she puts on herself a magical tattoo which gives her control over the Shadowkhan, she is slowly turned into a demonic creature until the tattoo is removed. She makes her only appearance in the second season episode named after her.

Biography[]

Queen of the Shadowkhan[]

Jackie manages to retrieve a magic book of Shendu (who is at the time trapped in Valmont's body) called the Demon Archive in the hopes of finding a way to put a stop to Shendu's quest to free the other Demon Sorcerers from the Netherworld. When Jade tells Jackie she wants a tattoo to impress her school peers and he prohibits it, she decides to make a fake tattoo after seeing the face on the Demon Archive's cover. She does this by drawing the symbol onto a paper, getting it wet and placing it onto her left ankle. Jade's tattoo impresses her school peers, but she is unable to wash it off.

When Jade's family discovers the tattoo, Uncle reacts with horror because the symbol is of great evil. He decides it must be removed magically before it causes unspeakable horrors. As if on cue, the Enforcers and Hak Foo burst in to retrieve the Demon Archive. Jade snatches the book and runs out of the shop during the ensuing fight. Hak Foo pursues and soon corners her in an alleyway. When she yells for someone to help her, the tattoo glows in orange color and the Shadowkhan appear. Thinking she is done for, Jade closes her eyes. Hak Foo then attempts to attack Jade, but the shadow ninjas suddenly turn and attack him instead, sending him fleeing in terror. They then disappear before Jade can comprehend what just happened, and the tattoo stops glowing. When Hak Foo reports this back to Shendu, the latter refuses to believe the Shadowkhan would do anything he has not commanded them to. When he attempts to summon his minions, though, they do not appear. The only explanation the stupefied Shendu can come up with is that the Chans are using the Demon Archieve against him.

The next morning, Jackie goes to do research about the tattoo removal spell with Uncle and Tohru. While Jade is brushing her teeth, she wishes she had time for breakfast. The Shadowkhan then appear behind her, scaring her. However, they surprise her by offering her various food for breakfast. Jade puts two and two together and realizes what happened the previous night. She then happily has the ninjas serve her while deciding to keep this a secret. When she later tells her stories again at school, she gets laughed at by Drew and some other students. This angers her so much that her pupils literally turn crimson red. She almost has the Shadowkhan attack Drew and the others before the ringing school bell brings her back to her senses.

When Jade is returning home, she discovers that the Dark Hand thugs have just managed to steal the Demon Archive without any of the shop's occupants having noticed. When they spot Jade, she stares at them menacingly, with her skin having turned light blue and her red eyes having lost pupils. The tattoo glows again and the Shadowkhan appear behind her, scaring the Dark Hand. Jade gleefully orders them to be spanked. When the Archive's disappearance is noticed in the shop, Jackie crawls through the underground tunnel the Dark Hand made and finds the Shadowkhan spanking the Dark Hand thugs and Jade grinning madly. He approaches Jade, and her appearance turns to normal. The ninjas turn their attention to Jackie and allow the Dark Hand to escape without the Demon Archive. Jade stops the Shadowkhan from attacking Jackie.

After doing some explaining in the shop, Jade says the Shadowkhan are perfectly obedient and claims that she will order them to do only good. With her skin having turned light blue again, she asks if she can keep them, only to be told no. Uncle then shows the potion he made to remove the tattoo, and Jade's protests against this fall on deaf ears. Before Uncle can pour the potion onto the tattoo, however, a sudden wind blows towards him. Jade's transformation is now complete; her skin is of darker blue, her eyes are completely red, and her voice is eerie. She declares herself to be the Queen of the Shadowkhan and intends to remain so. She has the Shadowkhan take herself, the Demon Archive and an elegant chair out of the shop.

Jade takes over Section 13, locks up Captain Black and all the personnel in cells, and has the Shadowkhan decorate the secret base as her palace. She later tries to decipher the Demon Archive while using the chair taken from the shop as her throne. However, she finds herself unable to translate the text and orders the ninjas to bring her someone who can. The Shadowkhan pick up Shendu who has just learned from his henchmen that Jade is the one controlling the ninjas. Deciding to see if he can make use of the situation, he willingly lets his former minions take him to Section 13 where Jade demands him to translate the Demon Archive for her and even offers to let him take his Talismans from Section 13's vault. He politely turns down the offer and explains in a flattering way that instead of simply translating the book, he could teach her to use the knowledge it provides. While the idea at first thrills Jade, she questions why she should place so much trust in her longtime enemy. Shendu then warns her of Jackie who is trying to get near her with the tattoo-removal potion. The Shadowkhan grab him, and Jade orders them to take the potion from him. A fight ensues between Jackie and the Shadowkhan which ends with the potion destroyed and Jackie subdued.

As Jade hovers menacingly, Shendu gives her a suggestion: "always destroy your enemies". A Shadowkhan reveals a sword in response, and Jackie begs his niece not to listen to Shendu. She responds that while her uncle was her friend, things are different now and she has made new friends. Jackie then directs her attention to something: Shendu is trying to sneak off with the Demon Archive. Enraged by his treachery, she orders The Shadowkhan after the demon who tries to make his way to the exit. While this happens, Tohru manages to sneak next to Jade with more tattoo-removal potion. He splashes it on the tattoo, and Jade notices this too late. Her skin turns to normal as the tattoo vanishes and she cries out in defiance. Shendu regains his control over the Shadowkhan and orders them to attack the Chans. However, Jade's eyes are still red, and she retains some of her control over the ninjas. Before she loses it completely, she orders them to destroy the Archive, and they successfully do this before Shendu can stop them. The episode ends with everyone happy that Jade is back to normal, and her act of destroying the Demon Archive is approved of.

Legacy[]

The Queen of the Shadowkhan's origin is given some depth in the fourth season, which involves the Shadowkhan and their king Tarakudo. It is revealed that the tattoo Jade put on herself depicts Tarakudo's face. When the Oni king first encounters Jade, he immediately recognizes her as the former Queen of the Shadowkhan. He then asks Jade if she is interested in returning to the Forces of Darkness. Jackie grabs her and claims that will never happen, which Jade agrees with. Tarakudo simply says: "In time. You are young." In a later episode which takes place on Halloween, he comments on her Oni costume and jokingly asks if she is "rehearsing" her return to the dark side.

When Jackie travels through past adventures to stop Daolon Wong from regaining his powers in the episode "Deja Vu", one of the past events he finds himself in is where Jade became the Queen. This embarrasses Jade who is witnessing her uncle's time-traveling through a spell.

The last mention of the Queen is in the fourth season's finale when J-team has to enter the Shadow Realm where the mask that should seal Tarakudo is being kept. Jade comes up with the idea to tattoo herself again and use the Shadowkhan to enter there. Jackie refuses to risk turning her into the Queen again, so Uncle chooses Tohru for the task. The latter manages to retrieve the mask, but when he returns, the tattoo on his arm has turned him into a red-eyed and blue-skinned creature similar to the Queen of the Shadowkhan. Tarakudo is soon afterwards sealed inside his mask along with his Oni Generals and the Shadowkhan, while Tohru is returned to normal when the tattoo vanishes from his arm.

Appearance[]

The Queen of the Shadowkhan is a corrupted version of Jade and has her appearance, although with some differences. The changes come gradually one after another. She ends up having a blue skin and completely crimson eyes like the Shadowkhan. Her voice becomes distorted, and her teeth look sharper in some scenes. When Jade becomes aware of her control over the Shadowkhan, she changes her normal outfit to a black variety. After invading and taking over Section 13, she clothes herself in a royal black and purple dress which appears to be a bit revealing for a preteen of Jade's age.

Personality[]

The Queen's personality is basically a darker version of Jade. It is hinted that these darker traits are those hidden underneath normal Jade's psyche and the tattoo is bringing them more to the surface. For one thing, the Queen tells Jackie that he won't give her orders anymore. This is a reference to Jade's habitually rebellious attitude towards Jackie and other authority figures. While Jade aspires to become a secret agent one day and cares for other people, the Queen is more selfish and ambitious and claims for herself a royal title. She is also interested in greatly increasing her powers and offers to let Shendu keep his Talismans because she considers their power inferior to that offered by the Demon Archive.

The Queen has Jade's drive and impatience, but she seems not to be as clear-minded. She has to be informed of Shendu's betrayal by Jackie and fails to notice the massive Tohru sneaking right next to her until it is too late. The power seems to have gone to her head as Shendu manages to briefly gain her trust through flattery. She is also more aggressive than Jade and even contemplates on killing Jackie. Her transformation becomes complete when she rejects the idea of being turned back to normal. Many of her actions are born out of the desire to remain in her powered form.

While Jade is an active tomboy with a keen interest in martial arts, the Queen tends to stay back and let the Shadowkhan do her dirty work and even wears a dress, something normal Jade is not that keen on wearing. She also seems to have a taste for Asian fineries as she has the Shadowkhan decorate Section 13 with them. This implies that Jade's already high pride has increased to the point of arrogance. The Queen still has Jade's cocky mischief, as shown when she had the Shadowkhan spank the Dark Hand thugs even though she could have ordered them to do something worse.

Powers and Abilities[]

The Queen gets no chance to show her full potential before her demise, so the full extent of her abilities is unknown. She assumably has all of normal Jade's skills and knowledge, but she never participates in action herself. She doesn't seem to know any more spells than normal Jade does, as shown by her failed attempt to study the Demon Archive.

Her most known ability is to summon and control the Shadowkhan. She has summoned them in an amount so numerous that it is only rivaled by a wielder of one of the Oni Masks or the Oni Generals themselves. Shendu is unable to control the Ninja Khan during the Queen's brief reign. This refers to Jade's abundant, though mostly undiscovered, potential in magical power.

The only other power the Queen has demonstrated is the ability to levitate. She has floated some feet above the ground, but it is never shown how far up she can levitate. A magical wind also seems to blow around her several times.

Trivia[]

  • Though the Queen of the Shadowkhan is just an one-time villain, her popularity among the series' fans is high. She's arguably the most popular minor character, and many have expressed disappointment about the fact that her potential was never explored more.
  • Many fan stories have been written of Jade becoming the Queen again. There is even a fan collaboration project on Fanfiction.net about the subject. It is called Project Dark Jade.
  • It is never revealed if the Queen is an Oni herself, though whether or not the Shadowkhan are Oni either is unconfirmed as well.
  • Another interesting detail is the fact that Tohru becomes barely anything but a mindless brute when his transformation by Tarakudo's mark is complete, whereas Jade retains her mind, even if it is driven by her impulses. While Tohru has his tattoo for a much shorter time than Jade had, his exposure to the Shadow Realm likely accelerated his transformation.
