~ Quintus to Maximus. |
Quintus is a major character in the 2000 action film Gladiator.
He was portrayed by Tomas Arana.
Biography[]
Quintus was a Roman general and a close friend of Maximus Meridius whom he served as his second in command. They often had different opinions and strategies but respected each other and worked together as seen in the opening scene where they win a fierce battle against some Germanic tribes. Soon after the battle, the Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius was murdered by his own son Commodus; the latter would succeed him as emperor. Maximus deduced the true circumstances about Marcus' death and declined to help Commodus, who in turn ordered Quintus to arrest and execute Maximus. Quintus had no choice but to obey and arrested Maximus telling him to not resist. When Maximus told him to take care of his family, Quintus coldly answered that he will meet them in the afterlife. Maximus tried to attack him but was hit by another Pretorian. Quintus soon took his place as Grand General and served Commodus as one of his closest men along with Senator Falco.
Maximus managed to escape and soon returned as a gladiator much to their surprise. Commodus blamed Quintus for failing to kill Maximus and had him witness and order the death of the soldiers responsible, even though Quintus tried to defend his men he obeyed the order. That cruel act of Commodus caused Quintus to realize he was wrong all along. Maximus with the help of some senators and gladiators tried to overthrow Commodus but was captured. Quintus approached his old friend and tried to justify his actions by claiming he is just a soldier and has no other choice but to obey. Commodus and Maximus fought in the arena with Quintus and his men watching. When Commodus lost his sword and demanded that Quintus gives him one, Quintus ordered his men to sheath their swords thus redeeming himself. After Commodus was killed, Maximus forgave his old friend and asked him to release his men before dying himself. Quintus did as he was told and paid his respects to his friend in the end.
