~ Renfield betraying Dracula.

Robert Montague Renfield, better known as R.M. Renfield, is the titular main protagonist of the 2023 comedy-horror film Renfield. He is the enslaved minion of Dracula who has served him for 90 years by bringing him people to eat.

He was portrayed by Nicholas Hoult, who also played Nux in Mad Max: Fury Road, Stefan Fredman in Wallander, Tony Stonem in Skins, Peter III of Russia in The Great, El Grosso in the U.S. dub of Underdogs, and will portray Lex Luthor in the upcoming Superman.

Biography[]

After the events of Dracula, Renfield is somehow brought back to life by Dracula and began to serve as his familiar. Dracula provided him with bugs which give him enhanced abilities and also stop him from aging. 90 years later Dracula and Renfield relocate to New Orleans to recover after Dracula just had a close encounter with some vampire hunters who nearly killed him. There, Renfield finds a self-help group for those in co-dependent relationships, and he makes plans to track down and kill the abusive partners in the group so that Dracula can eat them without feeling guilty. Renfield is surrounded by criminals when he follows one to a warehouse where drugs have been taken, and then an assassin hired by the opposing Lobo crime family attacks the entire group. An exhausted Renfield brings the bodies back to Dracula's hideaway in the basement of the run-down Charity Hospital after executing the assassin but fails in his attempt to find Teddy Lobo, the man who hired the assassin.

Renfield is informed by Dracula that the number of criminals he has brought are insufficient, and that the vampire actually craves the blood of a pure and innocent person. Renfield enters a restaurant to kidnap innocent people but is interrupted when he witnesses an attempt on a police officer named Rebecca's life that Teddy has been coerced into carrying out in order to restore the Lobos' ferocious reputation. As a result of Renfield and Rebecca's self-defense, several gang members are killed, and Teddy is able to flee. Renfield makes the decision to live independently of his master after internalizing the advice from his self-help group. Renfield sets up an apartment, adopts a friendly attitude, and provides a statement to the police to aid them in their attempt to finally put an end to the Lobos. When Dracula discovers Renfield's treachery, he massacres the supporters in front of his former henchman.

Renfield is surrounded by dead bodies when Rebecca shows up, prompting her to arrest him before being attacked by corrupt police officers and the Lobos, who also desire Renfield's revenge. Renfield is only just able to leave with Rebecca because she will not turn him over. The following morning, Rebecca discovers that Renfield has saved her life, and he reveals his real background while reiterating his desire to change. When the two attack the Lobos' headquarters after fighting through a squad of dishonest police officers, they discover that Dracula has given more than a dozen gang members, including Teddy, all of Renfield's superhuman abilities.

Renfield kills Teddy after a fight. When Rebecca arrives to stop Dracula, she discovers that Kate has been severely injured and can only be saved by the healing powers of Dracula's blood, which he will provide in exchange for Rebecca's loyalty. She deceives Dracula, who then engages in a last showdown with Rebecca and Renfield before they work together to imprison him in a magical circle. By beating Dracula to pieces, taking his life-giving blood, and turning the fragments of his corpse into concrete blocks that they disperse throughout the water system, Renfield and Rebecca either finally kill the vampire or at the very least make it exceedingly difficult for him to reassemble his body. Later, Renfield revives his self-help group friends.
