| “ | Salvation is close at hand for billions upon billions... once the Superman kneels at the feet of his holy father, Ra's al Ghul! | „ |
| ~ Ra's first lines upon awakening. |
Ra's al Ghul is one of the main antagonists of the DC Comics Absolute Universe, serving as the main antagonist of the comic series Absolute Superman.
He is the shadowy and corrupt leader of Lazarus Corp, an international conglomerate enterprise that holds power over many areas, countries and livelihoods. Disillusioned with the path humanity has been dragging Earth into, Ra's has plans to kill a large part of humanity off to ensure he can lead the rest into prosperity. He is the father of Talia al Ghul, master of Brainiac and the archenemy of Superman.
Biography[]
Background[]
Ra's past is unknown, but he is a very old man who has used the rejuvenating powers of the Lazarus Pit to allow himself to live far more than a normal human being would. He is likely the founder of Lazarus Corp and has had it spread its power and influence all over the world, ruling over many areas with economic hegemony. His enterprise is also an enemy of that of Hector Hammond's.
At some point in time, Ra's had a daughter, who aids him in his plans. He also found the alien being Brainiac, the sole survivor of his ship, part of the "Brainiac collective", and was made into Ra's chief scientist. The alien and his advanced technology, compared to that of Earth, allowed Lazarus Corp to further expand their dominion over the planet and ensure their superiority remained unchallenged.
As Ra's continues his plans, he has Talia become the leader of the Omega Men, a revolutionary group that opposes Lazarus. The army of peacemakers identifies at a farm, and Brainiac later confirms, an alien boy with powerful abilities compared to those of humans. Ra's declares this "Superman", real name Kal El, to be his "holy son", and plans to convert him to his side and use his god like power to complete his genocidal goals.
Absolute Superman[]
Ra's is in his room when three Omega Men appear to take him out. He continues his phone call as he calmly ignores the assassins, parrying and fighting them, while his clients on the phone are ecstatic. One of the agents is thrown into the Lazarus rejuvenating pit, where he is deaged until he is a baby. As he continues to murder his attempted assassins, Ra's ends by taking the baby and calmly throwing him down the building, to the horror of the people at the bottom.
Later, at Lois Lane's cell, Ra's goes to meet her and inquire about her Superman investigation. However, she correctly deduces most of what he has to say as well as who he is, which Ra's consistently compliments her on. However, he corrects her in that, rather than threatening her life, he would kill her father if she doesn't comply.
Ra's later engineers a situation to have Superman attack him and his forces at Greenland, with Brainiac saying it'll deplete his solar reserves, even if he'd rather have the alien at full power. He wants Kal El to kill his Peacemarkers, proving himself as a killer that can be moulded to the al Ghuls' philosophy. When Superman refuses to kill even one of his most personal enemies, Ra's appears in person to shoot him down with a kryptonite bullet, though Kal still saves him by blocking it with his hand. A little after, Talia reveals her true alliance and betrays Superman and the Omega Men.
As Brainiac tortures Superman with simulations, Ra's consistently checks on him to see what he is up to. Whenever he learns Kal is successfully goaded into killing enemies in the simulation, Ra's expresses great satisfaction.
Absolute Evil[]
In 1951, Hawkman was blackmailed into stopping "un-American" activities in exchange for his identity not being revealed to the public. The page then timeskips to the present day, where Oliver Queen is practising archery. He is conducting a phone call and explains to the caller that his target is Jubal Slade. Oliver also explains to the caller that an unknown person has been conducting a lot of private flights and has bought the courts. The person who is calling is revealed to be Hector Hammond, and he proceeds to a meeting room. Veronica Cale, the national security advisor, greets him. Ra's Al Ghul orders Hector to quiet down before they commence the meeting.
The Joker looks at him from across the table and agrees with Ra's, saying that he does not enjoy jokes. Sitting in the room also is Ms Thawne, head of Project Olympus. Cale explains that in 1939, there was a man named Wesley Dodds who operated as the vigilante known as the Sandman, but was shot and killed. He developed an advanced sleeping gas from which the government later stole. She then goes on to tell the story of Wildcat, a masked crime fighter who was framed for murder. Wildcat was later bribed after a stakeout in a factory and died peacefully in his sleep after retiring from crime and living a normal life. Without the work of Wildcat, 16 people perished within the factory. Cale tells the story of Iron Munro, an exceptionally talented stuntman who attended socialist meetings and lived a life of solitude, perishing when a chemical test was "accidentally" dropped on his home. The reason she explains the stories of these failed vigilantes is that they are several out of hundreds of examples of people who have acted outside of the status quo, and the targets they are dealing with today will be no different.
Cale explains that in Gateway City, a force of destruction appeared known as the Gateway Event which summoned a massive monster known as the Tetracide. A mysterious armoured woman on her steed flew towards the beast and slayed it with a simple punch. Cale found it extremely concerning that the troops on the ground allowed her to take command and to guide them towards killing the Tetracide. She then goes on to show that at the same time, a man with a cape made out of ash was violently disrupting Lazarus Corp operations within international territory. While she describes the others as non-human beings, she can confirm that the final subject they are targeting is human. The final subject that they are targeting has an axe on his chest in the shape of a bat and "appears and vanishes like a ghost." Joker talks to himself, saying that the bat-axed target did not take the money. She then shows more examples - a detective with a strange Euclidean force around him, a woman with strange green energy around her and a lightning-fast teenager with a telepathic ape companion. Cade and the people within the room know that things are escalating and that previously they could deal with these threats individually, but that is no longer possible, so they have decided to group together.
Hector gets angry and gets into an argument with Ra's, where he shouts at him that he does not need his help. Cade believes it would be a good time to show the solution to their problems and brings in Hawkman, who has a radical appearance than before. Hawkman is brainwashed and wears a variety of bandages on his head in addition to a vicious and aggressive helmet. Hawkman arrives and places Oliver's bloodied body on the table. He asks the group within the room if they have any questions. Ra's is pleased, telling Hector that this is the way that they solve problems - not within a month but rather a day. Ms Thawne looks confused and asks how exactly Hawkman killed Queen and whether it was a covert assassination, or if they are blackmailing her and her crew. Cade gives each of them a proposition - that they could make one phone call to Hawkman and get rid of their problems. Joker asks if he could have the floor and stands up.
Joker explains that his scientists have come up with a breakthrough when it comes to particle physics laboratory and tells the people within the room not to speak of this to anyone. He explains that the Higgs-Boson particle, which is considered the final piece of quantum physics, could be the answer as to how the universe works. His scientists have found a better particle called the "Omega Particle". He then showcases a video of a quantum accelerator and states that the omega particle has a "spiritual" and "moral" dimension to it:
Existence within his universe is ordered and ordained; some have the winning cards, and others have a handful of jokers. The people who get angry at the universe rally against it, and there is a proper term to describe it - the just word fallacy. There is no belief that a world can be just, but they have evidence of a natural order worked upon the world by a higher power. As they drag Oliver's lifeless body, Joker raises a toast towards an ordered world and a "Justice League".
