Raneem Rashad, better known by her supervillain alias The Rabble, is a villain in the Spider-Man franchise, serving as the main antagonist of the Miles Morales: Spider Man comics written by Cody Ziglar and major villain for Peter Parker as well.

She was born in the US to Jordanian immigrants and had mysterious technopathic abilities from a young age. After her mother's death, she worked hard to succeed in technology. Her father convinced her to apply to Brooklyn Visions Academy, but she lost the enrollment lottery to Miles Morales. Years later, after her father was admitted to a retirement home and she discovered Miles was Spider-Man, Raneem sought justice by targeting him and his loved ones, becoming his personal archenemy.

She serves as the main antagonist of the Trial by Spider and Retribution story arcs.

Personality[]

In her first appearance, Raneem appears to be a sweet, kind-hearted and down-to earth girl who seems to love helping people, especially the homeless ones, even going out of her way to frequently buy food for one in particular. She also appears to be timid, and usually keeps to herself because she prefers to talk to her machines rather than actual human beings.

However, this is just a mere aspect of her true nature, which gets revealed when she suits up as the Rabble - a ruthless, temperamental, petty and vengeful supervillain who will stop at nothing until her foes get the payback she thinks they deserve. She has a sheer, indomitable hatred for Miles Morales, viewing him as someone who doesn't deserve the positive benefits of the prestigious Brooklyn Visions Academy as she does. Raneem also blames him for taking everything from her, not even that he had no control over what had happened, instead choosing to personally attack Miles by kidnapping his best friend Ganke and girlfriend Starling, while also burning the Morales household down, highlighting her immaturity and spitefulness, despite her profound intellect. She is even willing to force Miles to kill her to save the overclocked cape killers, showing that she doesn't even care about winning; she just wants Spider-Man to lose.

Despite all of her flaws, Raneem does genuinely care for the people she's close to, especially her parents. In fact, her belief that she was unable to make them proud is a major catalyst as to why she not only wants to destroy Spider-Man and everything he stands for, but also to 'fix the broken system', though it's currently unclear what she means by this, as she seems to prioritize getting back at Miles more than anything else.

Biography[]

Past[]

Raneem Rashad was born to Jordanian immigrants in the US. Her parents realized she had special powers from a young age and would often ask her to fix machines when they broke.

Her mother's died during her youth, driving her to work hard to succeed in the technological department, and her father later convinced her to apply to Brooklyn Visions Academy. There were only about 40 spots available and more than 700 people applied, so a lottery was initiated in order to decide who would be accepted into the school; the last spot ultimately ended up going to Miles Morales, leaving Raneem out of the school.

The years passed and her resentment for Miles only grew. Her father eventually contracted Alzheimer's, and was sent to a retirement home. After finding out the boy who took her opportunity at a better life was also the new Spider-Man, Raneem decided to finally take matters into her own hands and make him her first victim in her path to get justice.

Trial by Spider[]

Raneem's first chronological appearance was when she was caught in the middle of a fight between Miles and the Scorpion, who was trying to rob a bank. Even though Spider-Man was able to save her, Raneem did not let this deter her crusade. It is revealed that she learned everything she possibly could about him and was already preparing to attack his loved ones, starting with his girlfriend Tiana Toomes, who was also the superheroine Starling. After capturing her, Rabble kidnapped Miles' best friend Ganke Lee and lured Miles into a trap by impersonating Ganke's phone. Fighting the young superhero, Rabble revealed her past, as well as her knowledge of Miles' history to him and managed to beat him into submission, nearly drowning him.

She then set her sights on Miles' family, blowing up their apartment in Brooklyn. Fortunately, Spider-Man was able to arrive just in time to rescue his parents and sister and, in a moment of desperation, was able to manifest a sword from his Venom blasts to match Rabble's own energy scythe, while Starling and Ganke were rescued by Misty Knight. Miles pleaded with Rabble to drop her feud against him, and tried to apologize for her misfortunes, but made the mistake of begging her to take out her anger on him instead of his family. Believing that he was just trying to morally absolve himself of his supposed wrongdoings, Raneem refused to cease her torment, and activated her Pyrrhic Protocol in an attempt to take her enemy down with her, creating an explosion. Miles barely managed to survive while Rabble retreated, and was presumed dead.

Gang War[]

After some time, Rabble re-emerged and formed an alliance with the Hobgoblin, assisting him in gaining control of New York's criminal underworld by upgrading his tech. In addition to supplying the criminals under Hobgoblin's employ, Rabble also supplied the other criminal organizations participating in the Gang War, including Mister Negative, the Buzz Boyz, and the Ankh-Colytes. Spider-Man, along with Starling, Ms. Marvel, Shift, and the Prowler (who had been working undercover for the Hobgoblin to uncover his plans) teamed up with the Cape Killers to confront Hobgoblin and Rabble at their secret base in Brooklyn.

Rabble fought against Spider-Man and his allies until Scorpion convinced several supervillains under the Hobgoblin's employ to turn on him. Seeing no other use for the Hobgoblin, Rabble abandoned him to join Madame Masque, her true employer, in the final battle at Central Park. Rabble equipped Madame Masque with upgraded tech and joined her forces against the Syndicate and their allies. Several of New York's heroes intervened in the battle and Rabble faced off against Miles again in exchange for Masque rewarding her with an A.I.M. lab. When the tide turned against Masque, Rabble abandoned the battle but vowed to Miles that they would finish their feud later.

Retribution[]

With her ability to communicate with machines weakened from her previous fights with Miles, Rabble raided several tech depots throughout the city to heal her powers until she was able to steal some valuable tech from Roxxon. A few hours after her latest heist, she was approached by Agent Gao for an alliance as they shared a mutual enemy in Spider-Man. Due to the city's Powers Act banning vigilantism being repealed, Gao hoped to arrest Spider-Man before the repeal was made official. Raneem provided her and the Cape Killers with special battlesuits made from her tech, but secretly gave Gao's suit a special command at her request, which when activated would put the Cape Killers' suits directly under Gao's control.

Raneem later visited her father in his nursing home, confiding in him, and acknowledging that she is fully aware Miles is trying to help her, but still refuses to accept it, because that would mean that she has also accepted that she has fallen far from her parent's dreams. Sadly, her dad once again fell under the effects of his dementia just before he could give her any advice.

The Cape Killers utilized their upgrades in a final attempt to arrest Spider-Man, who managed to fully tap into his Venom powers, was able to fight back with the help of his friends. However, amidst the fight, Rabble double crossed Gao and took complete control over her and the Cape Killers' suits via her Overclock Protocol, pushing their bodies to the extreme, which would eventually kill them. In order to save them and his allies, Miles was forced to duel his nemesis in a final one-on-one fight.

After he reached her new base, Miles and Raneem ruthlessly battled it out, each pushing themselves to their absolute limits in an attempt to defeat the other. Spider-Man was able to grab Rabble and slam her head-first into the ground, provoking her into forcing an overclocked Scorpion to blast Shift, grievously injuring him, and tried to goad Miles into killing her in order to save everyone by striking her in the heart just to spite him. Although Rabble was able to siphon his bio-electricity, shatter his arm and render him temporarily blind, Miles still persevered and was able to slip an Inhibitor Collar onto her, depowering Rabble long enough for him to knock her unconscious, which freed the Cape Killers from her control. Rabble was then taken away by the authorities.

Trivia[]

  • The name Raneem means 'sweet voice' in arabic (though it has multiple meanings). This is ironic because her moniker, Rabble, means a disorderly mob, or a cacophony of unpleasant noises.
  • She is very similar to both the Tinkerer and Spot from the Marvel's Spider-Man series and the Spider-Verse films respectively, in terms of design and motivations.
    • Just like Phin Mason, she has special high-tech armor, and has outfitted and upgraded known criminals (In Raneem's case, Bumbler, Scorpion, Hobgoblin, the Buzz Boyz, Ankh-Olytes, Mister Negative, and Madame Masque, while Phin gave the Underground her tech in exchange for becoming their leader).
    • And just like Spot, Raneem blames Miles for every single bad thing that has ever happened in her life and plots to take everything he has as revenge, despite him only being minutely involved.
  • There is a possibility that Rabble is a mutant, judging from the fact that she seemingly was born with her technopathic powers and continues to refer to herself as 'gifted'.
