General Radahn is cursed ever to wander. Eaten from the inside, by Malenia's scarlet rot, his Wits are long gone. Now he gathers the corpses of former friends and foes alike, gorging on them, like a dog.
~ The fate of Radahn following the Battle of Caelid.

Starscourge Radahn is a major antagonist in the 2022 video game Elden Ring and its 2024 expansion Shadow of the Erdtree. The son of Radagon and Rennala, he was the commander of his army of Redmane knights, who took part in the events of the Shattering, as they aid their leader in seeking and obtaining the Great Runes of the other Demigods. He and his army would be an unstoppable force until their encounter with the Cleanrot army. Radahn would then get into conflict with his half-sister, Malenia, and faced off against her in a final battle in Aeonia.

The battle, which ended in a stalemate, left him a victim of the Scarlet Rot that Malenia had unleashed, causing him to lose his wits and become a mindless beast that wanders the deserts of Caelid, feasting on the flesh of fallen soldiers alike, whether they are a friend or foe.

He is voiced by Pip Torrens, who has also played White-Mask Varré in Elden Ring, Herr Starr in Preacher, and Kaplan in Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens.

Personality[]

Radahn was once a proud warrior with a sense of pride and honor. Among the demigods, Radahn was perhaps one of the least vicious ones and instead one of the more noble ones. He valued his comrades greatly and inspired confidence in them. In turn, they offered him the respect he deserved. Having looked up to Godfrey, the first Elden Lord, as his idol, Radahn was inspired to become a great warrior like him, which was why his armor is enamored with lions, as they symbolize Godfrey. He was also a genuinely kind and compassionate man, which led to his half-brother Miquella falling in love with him.

Radahn also loved and cherished his steed, Leonard, deeply, so much that he went out of his way to learn how to use Gravity Magic so that his massive size and weight would not do harm to his steed. As the general of the Red Lion army, he was considered to be both a tactical genius, master of war, profession in archery and combat, as well as being talented in Gravitational powers.

Despite his noble qualities, however, Radahn's pride was also a flaw of his in a way as it encouraged him into taking part in the conflict between the demigods called The Shattering and seeking possession of the Great Runes. This suggests that, like the other demigods, he desired to take over the Lands Between for himself, despite not being an Empyrean himself. He was not the aggressor in this conflict, however, as Miquella sent Malenia to strong-arm him, with the intent of having him be resurrected as his consort.

However, this would change when he would be inflicted with the Scarlet Rot during his battle with Malenia. As a result of the effects of Malenia's Scarlet Rot, Radahn's mind and wits are destroyed, driving him into becoming nothing more than a feral, mindless beast that feasts on the corpses of his fallen comrades and enemies in the desert of Caelid and howling at the sky.

Upon being resurrected as Miquella's consort, however, he appears to have regained his former self and is fully committed to fighting alongside Miquella.

Trivia[]

  • If the player initiates the Radahn Festival, they can summon up to six NPCs to aid them in battling Radahn. Patches, however, will flee almost immediately after being summoned.
  • The Remembrance of the Starscourge can be consumed for 40,000 Runes or handed to Enia for either the Starscourge Great Swords or the Great Lion Bow.
  • Radahn is the only demigod boss to not have his own dialogue, as he doesn't talk throughout. Internal files for Shadow of the Erdtree revealed that he was initially intended to receive dialogue of his own but was cut all together.
  • If looked at really closely, Radahn's face is shown to be stuck in a scowling expression.
