~ Rakdos

Rakdos is a major antagonist and occasional anti-hero in Magic: The Gathering, primarily on the Plane of Ravnica. An ancient and monstrously powerful Demon, Rakdos is the Parun of the Red/Black Guild, The Cult of Rakdos, and also serves as its Guildmaster. One of the most powerful beings of Ravnica, Rakdos was chosen to lead a Guild in the hopes of binding him to a greater responsibility, or at least bring some kind of decrease to his rampages and the destruction they would leave behind. He is older than the Guildpact itself, and is the single most important figure in the Cult of Rakdos.

In Magic the Gathering: Arena, he is voiced by Darin De Paul who also voiced Ardyn Izunia from the Final Fantasy series, Trade Prince Gallywix from World of Warcraft: Legion, Samuel Hayden from 2016s Doom, Zeron Alpha from 3Below, J. Jonah Jameson in Marvel's Spider-Man video game, and Bular from Wizards.

Biography[]

One of the oldest beings on the plane of Ravnica and possibly the eldest demon there, Rakdos is a harbinger of complete chaos. Seemingly unable to ever be truly defeated, the powers that be invited Rakdos to become a Parun of a Guild, to try and bring the archdemon to a greater purpose in life aside his destructive tendencies. He created The Cult of Rakdos, a legion of maniacal followers who try to emulate their dark master in every shape and form. While its members are fanatics, and often cruel criminals, they, like all the other guilds, serve a vital purpose in the realm of Ravnica, serving as the menial labor forces as well as the entertainment and service industry.

While Rakdos primarily spends most of his time slumbering in his lair below Rix Maadi for extensive periods of time, when he does emerge, there is no greater event for the Cult, and there is no extreme they are unwilling to go to to appease him.

During the War of The Spark, Rakdos at first played no part in the alliance against Nicol Bolas, because his emissary Hekara was slain. As events continued, Rakdos still did not assist the heroes, but this took a turn when Hekara was resurrected. While Rakdos himself still did not cooperate with the others, he did not prevent Hekara from aiding them. It wasn't until the final battle against the Dragon God that Rakdos directly participated in the defense of Ravnica, and in turn, all planes. He, together with Gideon Jura, took a direct assault against Bolas. Afterwards, showing his care for his plane in his own way, Rakdos began making preparations for a grand celebration to help ease the hearts of the people.

Personality[]

Rakdos, perhaps moreso than any other being within the worlds of Magic, is the perfect embodiment of the colors Red and Black. He is pure chaos and destruction, death and cruelty, flawlessly melded into an unstoppable titan of fury and malice. He is the already extremes of the Cult of Rakdos, at their most extreme. A hedonist, sadist, chaotic and anarchistic archdemon, Rakdos thoroughly enjoys the havoc and mayhem he unleashes, and the death and misery that follows. He is almost a perfect Chaotic Evil character, and is wholly unrepentant for the woes he and his followers cause for the sheer pleasure of it.

However. In a moment of true crisis, when his world is in danger of destruction, Rakdos is a shockingly honorable and even heroic figure, and will defend Ravnica and those who dwell within it. While his reasons for doing so are probably only known to himself, Rakdos has even shown that he cares about the people of his plane despite the anarchy he unleashes. After the defeat of Nicol Bolas, he and his Cult took it upon themselves to prepare a most magnificent celebration to help uplift the spirits of the people, and to proudly celebrate their victory in defiance of the evil Elder Dragon.

Powers and Abilities[]

As a perfect representation of Red and Black magic, Rakdos is unspeakably powerful. One of the most, if not thee most powerful Demon in all the planes, Rakdos has the infernal rage and chaotic destruction of red, and the darkest magics of black. A literal giant who towers over normal people, he is almost virtually unstoppable to the point where, even if he somehow suffers grievous injuries, he always returns to continue unleashing chaos. He is one of the most powerful beings in all of Ravnica, arguably the most powerful guildmaster, who's destruction was so unparralled that the powers that be of the plane invited him to become a Parun in the hopes that, by binding him to a greater purpose, his rampages would lessen, and Rakdos would possibly help serve a higher purpose in life.

He wields a colossal flaming scythe that can decimate entire armies with a single swing, can create, and control any and all kinds of fires, is nigh impervious to damage, as well as unleash devastating black magic. He was able to fight and kill one of the Nephilim, eldritch Old Gods of the plane, and immediately after fought Project Kraj, an extremely powerful bioweapon. While it eventually absorbed Rakdos, putting him in a coma, this ultimately proved to be fatal for the ooze, as the demon's power proved to be too much to contain. Later in the War of The Spark, Rakdos became one of the very few beings to not only directly assault Nicol Bolas, but survive doing so.
