Ramón Salazar is one of the two secondary antagonists (alongside Jack Krauser) of the 2005 survival horror game Resident Evil 4 and its 2023 remake.
He is the 8th castellan of the Salazar family castle, who lives in a small village in rural Spain governed by the Los Iluminados cult. As the ruler of the castle, Salazar was manipulated by Los Illuminados leader Osmund Saddler into freeing the Las Plagas parasite hidden underneath the architecture, leading to Salazar himself becoming infected with the parasite, and becoming an enemy to Leon. In the game, he is assisted by crossbow wielding Ganados and two highly mutated creatures known as Verdugos.
In Japanese, he was voiced by Shigeru "Cho" Nagashima in the 2023 remake. In English, he was voiced by Rene Mujica in the original game and Marcio Moreno in the 2023 remake.
Appearance[]
As mentioned in-game, Salazar, despite his young age, is quite sick and withered. He is extremely short, presumably due to his illness having stunted his growth. In both the original and remake, he wears a regal/blue uniform, and possesses grey skin, alongside unusually bright yellow eyes. However, in the original game, Salazar wears a blue tricorn which is not present in the remake, instead possessing greater hair.
In the original, when Salazar mutates by fusing with the Queen Plaga, he becomes attached to the wall of the castle, with his head and neck emerging from a central point. His long neck ends with the mutated head of his other Verdugo servant, which has been enlarged and now only has one eye. Along the neck, the remnants of Salazar's original form resides as a heart which serves as a weakness. The Verdugo head is able to split in half to create a sideways mouth that can destroy Leon. In addition, two tentacles emerge on both sides to attack and smash Leon.
In the remake, Salazar doesn't fuse with the other Verdugo, and Salazar's new form is instead more of a slug like being, which spouts out tendrils to attach to different elements of the environment and traverse. He possesses razor-sharp teeth and a mouth with 3 jaws, within which his original form resides and again serves as a weak point. He is also able to spew acid.
Personality[]
Salazar was an arrogant and sadistic individual, taunting Leon at every possible opportunity, and grew increasingly frustrated by the agent's ability to turn it right back in his face with his wit. He comes off as being extremely childish and has tendencies of throwing fierce tantrums when angered. Despite this hatred, he does harbor some form of respect for Leon to some degree, acknowledging him for his tenacity. he would ultimately admit his respect for his tenacity.
Due to losing his parents at an early age, Salazar comes across as being an insecure and lonely child. As he never learned the full story of the banishment of Los Illuminados, he harbored strong guilt towards the actions of his ancestors. This allowed him to be an easy target of Saddler's manipulations, who managed to transform him into a vicious ruler with a tyrannical megalomania.
In the remake, Salazar was revealed to be unpleasant and petty person during his childhood, going as far as to brutally torture a maid with a slow and horrific death. While he no longer hacks Leon's communications, he still in certain areas uses local systems to talk and occasionally mock Leon. Salazar also displayed more feelings of self-hatred because of his appearance and ill disposition which he projected towards Leon especially during his boss fight. Most of Salazar’s insults towards Leon were likely what he was called or thought of himself for example he called Leon a “tiny, ugly, sickly half-wit. You should never have been born. You demon child! I’ll send you back to the hell you came from!”

I have no idea as to what the Lord is planning, but Sr. Salazar was just being used. It is too late now however, Sr. Salazar has already taken the Plaga into his body. There is no turning back once the Plaga has turned into an adult in the body. The Plaga parasite will not die unless the host dies. There's no cure. Perhaps, Sr. Salazar may have been vaguely aware of the Lord's plan all along. But it's so hard to tell. Nevertheless, there's nothing I can do about it now. I have served the Salazar family for generations. I am prepared to continue my services until the very end. |

Salazar was born in 1984. His father, Diego was the 7th count of Valdelobos who holds the duty of protecting the Salazar nobles from the Las Plagas. The Salazars have been engaging against the Saddlers for centuries. However, he left his wife Catalina to take care of Ramon, who became sick at an unspecified time. Ramon's mother was forced to assimilate the Plaga into his body in order to cure his illness.
Many years in the past, the first of the Salazar castellans sealed Las Plagas parasites into a passage below the castle. These parasites were utilized by a cult known as Los Illuminados to take control of people, recruiting them. The Salazars continued to bring down the cult for years until finally Ramón took over. All his close family had died when he was a child and he lived alone in the castle, with only his butler for company. Added to the fact that he started following Los Illuminados' beliefs, Salazar was easily open to the manipulation of Osmund Saddler, the cult's leader.
He managed to get Salazar to break the seal holding Las Plagas, convincing him that his ancestors' actions were a sin. Las Plagas were excavated by workers from the nearby village and as the parasites were spread through the area, Salazar was injected with a Control Plaga that allowed him to control other Plagas infected creatures. Eventually he was consumed by the parasites' power and no longer left his castle. Salazar had become obsessed with seeing Los Illuminados dominate the world.
Resident Evil 4[]

After Los Illuminados' kidnapping of Ashley Graham, daughter of the U.S. president, Leon S. Kennedy was sent in to rescue her. As they attempted to escape from the area, they eventually ended up in Salazar's castle. He confronted the two, telling Leon to hand Ashley over if he wanted to survive. Eventually, Ashley was recaptured, and Leon and Salazar would continue to have many conversations over Leon's radio after he hacked into it. Leon managed to repeatedly overcome Salazar's traps and monsters, even fighting off one of his Verdugo bodyguards and escaping a giant walking statue of the castellan.

Salazar and Leon faced off shortly after this and Salazar explained that Ashley was undergoing a ritual to make her into a Ganado. However, Leon threw his knife into the castellan's hand and his other Verdugo threw the knife back at Leon while the two retreated into an elevator. Leon finally came to the Queen Plaga where Salazar was waiting for him.

Salazar was waiting and he informed Leon that Ashley had undergone the ritual and was being brought to an island by Saddler. Salazar then merged with the Queen Plaga and his Verdugo into a huge monstrosity that was part of a two-story wall. However, Leon managed to finally defeat this monstrous form, bringing an end to Salazar and ending the Salazar family line.
Resident Evil 4 Remake[]
After Leon S. Kennedy escaped from the village after killing Mendez, Leon and Ashley ended up in Salazar's castle.
Powers and Abilities[]
Salazar is able to plant Las Plagas in people using tentacles that sprout from his hands and can control other creatures with the parasites inside them. On his own, he does not seem to have any notable fighting skills; when he fused with the Queen Plaga, he gains large tentacles to attack with, as well as the now even more mutated head of the Verdugo on a long neck.
In remake version of the game, Salazar's mutated form — which involved merger with Queen Plaga alone off-screen due to his last remaining Verdugo's absence — is smaller yet much more mobile, appearing as a giant tentacled slug whose longer, web-like tendrils provide quick locomotion and has a giant heat with tripartite jaws full of sharp teeth concealing what remained of his human form. He can also vomit corrosive black liquid as a medium-ranged attack.
However in both cases, Salazar himself serves as the weak point of this twisted creature, but he can protect himself with a pair of mandibles like appendages that close around him. But if the rest of the creature is hurt, then the Salazar will be exposed.

Trivia[]
- Salazar is the only boss in Resident Evil 4 that remains in one place during the boss fight and the only one that requires using a ranged weapon. This is changed in the remake.
- Salazar's conversations with Leon are known amongst fans for breaking the seriousness of Resident Evil 4 since Salazar is highly overdramatic and Leon constantly responds with smart aleck comments.
- There is a grammatical error with the subtitles when Salazar calls Leon after sending his Verdugo after him in the original game. Salazar says that he's sent his right hand to get rid of Leon, to which he replies, "Your right hand comes off?", but the subtitle reads "You're right hand comes off?".
- Curiously, Salazar's mutated form in the remake resembles Ricardo Irving's own, as both has tripartite jaws concealing their human forms fused with their tongues and possess tentacles to the boot.
- Salazar's secret weakness is golden eggs. In the remake, throwing a golden egg and Salazar's human body will chip off 70% of his health and you can easily kill him in record time if you have two eggs and good aim.
