“ | But if I know Kris, and boy do I know Kris... that's not what YOU want, innit? Freedom. That's what YOU want, chum, freedom! | „ |
~ Ramb to Kris, Chapter 3. |
“ | Don't bother, Kris. Ramb's already turned to stone a bit ago... He was a plug, but because you played with him like any other toy, it made him feel special. Might have given him a little bit of an ego, in fact... Always condescending to any plan, saying "what's best for Kris?" Couldn't get rid of him, so Tenna made him "work the stand"... Us from Card Castle fit in fine. Him? He never really belonged. His first day at this stand, he joked "how about the usual?"... no one laughed! Mixing drinks alone for himself, he wasn't allowed to handle the points... No one will shed a tear for him. Inside, he was probably stone already. | „ |
~ A Pippins talking about Ramb after he turns to stone |
Ramb is a minor character in Chapter 3: Late Night of the 2018 indie RPG Deltarune, serving as the deuteragonist of the Sword Route.
An employee of Tenna, he is the bartender of the Green Room stand and watches over keeping Kris's mother Toriel imprisoned. Despite this, he harbors no ill will towards Kris and actually wants the best for them. In the Sword Route, Ramb allows Kris to play what he claims are the "original versions" of Tenna's games, which are essential to getting the Shadow Mantle which greatly helps in defeating the Knight.
Biography[]
Background[]
Ramb was a power strip from the library that Kris took to their house. Due to being played with like any toy, he grew an ego and became obsessed with what's best for Kris, thus becoming an outcast in the eyes of the TV World's populace.
Chapter 3: Late Night[]
Ramb first appears in the pre-show area before the first Adventure Board, and asks Kris to catch up with him in the Green Room. He is later seen there, attending the bar at the top of the room. He gives the party a reward depending on their rank. If the player gets an S-Rank, he allows Kris backstage into the changing room where he tells them that the games Tenna had Kris play were actually modified versions, and that he has the original game. He lets Kris into a door where they can play the original versions of the games, kickstarting the "Sword Route".
During the chapter, Tenna is called by someone who tells him that Toriel was found near the purple cliffs, to which Tenna responds to not waste any time. Throughout the chapter, Tenna is repeatedly contacted through his antennas and called to check on Toriel's current status. It is later revealed that the mysterious someone Tenna was calling was actually Ramb, right before he quits his job.
If the player goes back to the Green Room after all of Tenna's staff have left him, Ramb is seen petrified with a Pippins next to him. The Pippins states how "no one will shed a tear" for Ramb and that he was disliked by the rest of Tenna's staff. Alternatively, if the player does Ramb's quest, he is only shown half-petrified in the secret game room, and after the Shadow Mantle's Holder is defeated Ramb disappears completely. The Ribbick in the room implies something - potentially the minigame Kris that walked out of the game - took Ramb's stone body.
Trivia[]
- Ramb seems to allude to the previous secret bosses, referencing both Jevil and Spamton and having similar traits to them:
- He has a speech quirk, his being his British accent.
- He's based off a "discarded" object, his being the old power strip Kris and Asriel took from the library and evidently don't use anymore.
- He seems to be based off a stage of grief, his being depression as he never seeks out freedom for himself, instead recognising that he's insignificant as a Darkner and doesn't have a chance of obtaining freedom for himself.
- It is possible that the Shadow Mantle's Holder, the "secret boss" of the chapter, is actually Ramb, considering he disappears after the holder is defeated and is the reason the player fights them in the first place. Additionally, it's possible that he could've used the last ounce of his strength to act as the secret boss, seeing as he was only half petrified.
- It's been theorised that the reason the Knight has a Shadow Crystal on itself was to transform Ramb into this chapter's secret superboss, only to arrive too late as he petrified.
- Although he is technically not an antagonist himself and actually wants the best for Kris, he is in charge for keeping Toriel imprisoned for Tenna and leads Kris into a disturbing sidequest where they meet The Shadow Mantle's Holder who tempts them into doing evil acts. It is uncertain whether Ramb is aware of the dark nature of the sidequest or if the minigame it takes place in was altered by someone else, making him ambiguously evil.
