Biography[]
Cortez and his brother Esteban are the leaders of the Del Lobo Gang, an outlaw gang consisting mostly of Mexicans. He is wanted for murder and robbery in the State of Lemoyne, with bounties on his head in Rhodes and Saint Denis.
In the mission "A Quick Favor for an Old Friend", bounty hunter Sadie Adler asks John Marston to help her apprehend Cortez. The two head up to Painted Sky Ranch in Big Valley, where Cortez was recently spotted by an encyclopaedia salesman. Sadie finds the owner, Polish immigrant Wróbel, tied to a chair. Wróbel explains that Cortez is hiding in the barn and has been living on the ranch for several days. Meanwhile, John investigates the barn and is ambushed by Cortez, but quickly defeats and subdues him. Sadie then knocks Cortez out with her shotgun and confirms that he is indeed Ramon Cortez. John hogties him and they take him back to Rhodes on Sadie's horse to hand him over to Sheriff Harmon Thomas.
After jailing Cortez, Sheriff Thomas asks John and Sadie to help guard the jail until his deputies arrive to take Cortez to Saint Denis for execution. Some time later, a number of Del Lobos show up at the jail to demand Cortez's release. A gunfight ensues and John and Sadie manage to repel the Del Lobos, but during the shootout one of the Del Lobos manages to dynamite the wall of Cortez's cell, allowing him to make his escape. John and Sadie agree to hunt down Cortez again in return for a higher bounty.
After searching for several minutes, Sadie finds a campsite and realizes the Del Lobos are nearby. Observing from a vantage point on the Old Greenbank Water Mill, Sadie notices the Del Lobos are waiting for a boat and goes down to confront them while John provides sniper support. Once the Del Lobos are defeated, Cortez attempts to flee in a rowboat but is forced to row back into land by gunfire from John and is tied up. Several more Del Lobos attempt to rescue Cortez but are defeated and Cortez is once again taken back to Rhodes. Cortez is cut free of his bonds and handed over to the waiting deputies, who place him in a paddy wagon and take him to Saint Denis to be executed.
