Biography[]

Ramses II is the son of Pharaoh Seti and the brother of the Princess (the Pharaoh's daughter). The Princess adopted a male infant that was floating in a basket up the river. Unknown to her, this infant was the son of a Hebrew slave couple who placed him in a basket up the river to prevent him from being killed as Seti ordered all boy infants of the Hebrew and Jewish slaves to be murdered to prevent a possible rebellion. The Princess named him Moses but growing up, Ramses did not hold any affection for his adopted nephew despite spending so much time together. However, when Moses becomes a teen, he is reunited with his biological brother Aaron, who explains his true heritage. Amidst this revelation, Moses ends up inadvertently murdering a slave overseer and is banished for doing so. Moses soon finds a new home in Midia where he soon marries. Seti soon dies and Ramses ends up inheriting the throne and becomes an even vicious and crueler Pharaoh than Seti ever was. He also soon marries and has a son.

However, Moses is forced to return to Egypt when the God of the Israelites visits him and tasks him with freeing the Hebrew and Jewish slaves. Returning to Egypt, he bestows the power of God to Ramses, who is less than impressed and rather than adhere to his demands, decides to spite Moses by doubling down on the Jewish people's workload. Despite this, Moses does not falter to Ramses and begins unleashing a bunch of plagues on Egypt courtesy of God (with such highlights as turning the Nile River into blood, making frogs invade the land, the dust becoming lice, a mixture of creatures including gnats swarming the city and wild animals including peacocks, zebras, wolves, elephants, hippos, rhinos, snakes, scorpions, crocodiles, tigers, bears, lions, leopards, cheetahs, giraffes, foxes, vultures, falcons, ravens, ostriches, owls, and eagles destroying everything, livestock became diseased, boils on the Egyptians, fire and hail on the city, locusts eating the crops, and darkness and brimstone on the city of Egypt). In spite of all this, Ramses refuses to release the slaves and upon Moses coming to him to demand once again to obey God's command, Ramses refuses and when Moses states that God will punish all of Egypt by killing the firstborns, Ramses retaliates by threatening to kill Moses if he sets foot in his house again.

Ultimately, God follows through on his threat and kills every newborn of the Egyptians (the Hebrews and Jewish were spared because they adhered to God's instructions to put lamb's blood on their doorframe to spare themselves) and soon, God even kills Ramses' son. Calling for Moses, a grieving Ramses tells him that he will finally set the Israelites free, wanting nothing more to do with them. However, after the Hebrews, Jewish, and Moses leave, Ramses sees that releasing them has caused their crops to die and herds to be unsupervised. Deciding that it was foolish of him to release the slaves, Ramses rallies his guards and they set out to recapture and kill the Hebrews, who are staying by the enormous Red Sea. Just as they reach them however, Moses manages to call on God to part the Red Sea so that the Hebrews can pass by and also use a giant pillar of fire (that the Hebrews and Jewish have been following since they left Egypt) to block Ramses and his guards from catching up to them. However, when the pillar of fire goes out, Ramses calls out to attack the Hebrews just as they make it to the other side of the Sea. However, Moses calls on God to stop parting the Red Sea and thus, the Red Sea is put back into place but with the cost of wiping out the Pharaoh's entire army.

Ramses is spared though because before he could join his army, his stagecoach hit a rock and broke and caused him to fall out. He can only watch in horror as his entire army is destroyed. After the sea is back to normal, Ramses sadly sees the debris of his fallen soldiers eventually walks back to Egypt, completely broken-up and finally seeing that he was no match for God's wonders.

After that, he does not appear for the rest of the movie, as Dathan takes over as the main antagonist for the rest of the film.

Trivia[]

  • Alfred Molina seems to give Ramses an American accent rather than his usual British. This was most likely done to avoid comparisons to Moses and Rameses from The Prince of Egypt, as Moses spoke with an American accent (as he was played by an American actor the late Val Kilmer) while Rameses spoke with a British accent (as he was voiced by a British actor Ralph Fiennes) and the Moses and Ramses in the 2007 Ten Commandments are voiced by an American actor (Christian Slater) and British actor (Alfred Molina) respectively as well.
  • Alfred Molina and Christian Slater voiced both Ramses and Moses respectively in a recording booth together.
