~ Randall Tier to Hannibal Lecter

Randall Tier is a supporting antagonist in Season 2 of the TV show Hannibal.

Randall was a serial killer and unique murderer who desired to "become an animal", doing so by engineering a hydraulic exoskeleton fitted with a Cave Bear's skull and claws to maul his victims. He was originally treated by Dr. Hannibal Lecter in his youth and would later be responsible for the deaths of three people, who he tore limb from limb.

He was portrayed by Mark O'Brien, who also portrayed Alex Le Domas in Ready or Not.

Biography[]

When he was young, Randall Tier was a patient of Hannibal Lecter and became obsessed with becoming an animal. He later made a hydraulic exoskeleton with the skull of a Cave Bear and the claws of a Dire Wolf. Randall used the monster suit to maul and ravage his victims, his first victim being a trucker, who he ripped apart with the suit. His next victims were a couple.

Hannibal realizes that the killer is his former patient, Randall, who now works at a museum and stole the Cave Bear skull and the Dire Wolf claws to build his animal suit. Hannibal tells Randall that the FBI are beginning to figure out that he killed the three people and tells him what he can say when he is confronted.

Will Graham and Jack Crawford talk to Randall, who says that Hannibal told him to say, though Will and Jack aren't fully convinced that Randall isn't the killer. Randall meets up with Hannibal, who convinces him to break into Will's house and kill him.

Randall goes to Will's house and injures one of his dogs. Will leaves to help his dog and goes back inside, locking the door to keep Randall out. However, Randall jumps in through a window as Will turns off the lights. Randall attacks Will, resulting in Will breaking his neck in self defense. Will brings Randall's corpse to Hannibal's house, where Hannibal finds him at the dinner table.

Randall's remains placed on a skeleton.

Randall's remains placed on a skeleton.

Will and Hannibal dismember Randall's corpse before adding it to the skeleton of a cave bear. The upper part of Randall's head is placed on the skull, as well as the cave bear's limbs being replaced with Randall's. Randall's body parts on the skeleton are found by the BAU, who arrive to examine it along with Hannibal, Will, and Jack. An investigation on Randall's death begins. Randall's death would also begin to haunt Will.

Will keeps Randall's remains and the cave bear suit in his barn. Randall's remains were placed beneath pieces of meat in a locked freezer. However, Freddie Lounds searched through the barn and found the cave bear suit, as well as Randall's remains, which included his lower jaw.

Personality[]

Doctors told me the internal map of my body didn't match reality.
~ Randall Tier to Will Graham

Randall Tier is a quiet young man suffering from an identity disorder. He was formerly in the psychiatric care of Hannibal, who encouraged his penchants rather than help him repress them or find an healthier outlet.

Randall has engineering expertise and worked at the Natural History museum where he procured the parts for his animal suit.

Appearance[]

He was the second overall victim (the first being Garret Jacob Hobbs) of Will Graham, having murdered him with his bare hands following an attempt on his life (an event orchestrated by Hannibal). After being killed, he was displayed by Will at the museum he worked at, combined with his arms, legs and top half of his head with a animal skeleton.

Victims[]

  • An unnamed truck driver
  • An unnamed couple

Attempted[]

  • Will Graham

Trivia[]

  • Tier's name hints at his character, as "Tier" is German for "animal", and Randall an Old English/German name meaning "wolf shield".
