Gentlemen, I do declare: The Factory is back in business!
„
~ Randolph Metzger
Randolph Thaddeus Metzger, AKA SCP-748-4, is an antagonist in the SCP Foundation series. He is a wealthy industrialist who controls the Lowell Factory, a Massachusetts subsidiary of the Factory, and later presides over a modern-day revival of the Factory after escaping containment.
Metzger, born in 1840 to German parents, was an affluent textile magnet who owned several textile mills. His most prominent mill was in Lowell, Massachusetts, where he employed 70% of the local population. The sixth wealthiest man in the world, he was widely celebrated in the United States for his rags-to-riches story and charitable works.
However, Metzger was hated by the organized labour movement because of his factories lack of safety regulations and the squalid conditions his workers lived in. This culminated in the Lowell Factory being bombed in 1895, killing 23 people. Six union leaders were blamed and hanged, but were likely innocent.
After the Lowell bombing, Metzger met a being named The Investor who offered Metzger an endless supply of raw materials in return for the sacrifice of his family and household servants. Metzger agreed and sacrificed his family and servants to The Investor before setting about restructuring the Lowell Factory to The Investor's will. He lured his workers back by claiming he had improved conditions and promising higher wages. Unknown to the workers, Metzger was restructuring the Lowell Factory to connect it to other factories controlled by The Investor through "Janus Doors", that were also used by the Alagaddans, and had been granted two machines by The Investor - the "M-Machine", which could transport any consumer goods Metzger wanted between factories, and The Crucible, which could transform anything into raw material. The workers, whose numbers grew daily, were forced to continue working 24 hours a day, every day, only stopping to eat meals containing drugs that would allow them to keep on going. When they eventually died from overwork their bodies would be fed into The Crucible, turning them into raw materials. Those who were spared this fate were taken by Metzger and lobotomized, skinned, plasticized and turned into Metzger's security force who would ensure the workers kept working.
In 1912, The Investor began planning a war for his unknown ends and directed Metzger to begin producing anomalous weapons for that purpose. Metzger happily agreed, describing it as a "most profitable venture". However, The Investor slowly began to sideline Metzger and he realized he was becoming obsolete as the Lowell Factory grew more efficient. Eventually, Metzger committed suicide in November 1915 by shooting himself in the head, leaving behind a suicide note reading "THIS WASNT WHAT I WAS PROMISED". The Investor then had his brain was extracted and placed inside a machine fed by the worker's lobotomized brains. Metzger used this to continue running the Lowell Factory and produce dangerous anomalous products until The Investor, realizing he was losing control, shut down the project and destroyed The Crucible and the M-Machine. Despite this, Metzger's security force continued to abduct people and turn them into more of them.
Suffolk Mill[]
Prior to being discovered by the Foundation, Metzger used a derelict textile factory called the Suffolk Mill as a testing site. Several Factory products were developed at the Mill, including a pickaxe which rendered the user incapable of feeling pain or exhaustion (SCP-4894, dismissed as "Failed" by higher-ups in 1889) and the anti-gravity field generator known as SCP-385. Anomalous incidents were reported at the Mill between 1979 and 1983, mainly unexplained noises and the appearance of rooms that were not part of the building. Seven staff members were eventually abducted in 1996 by entities working for Metzger (whom they referred to as "Mr. Randolf") and forcibly turned into brainwashed, barely-human workers using a rust-like substance. One of the workers was killed during the process, as their torso was discovered by a Foundation team investigating the anomalies at the Mill (known as SCP-6748). The fate of the other six is unknown, but it was mentioned that they would be shipped to Mr. Randolf "as soon as we find more subjects, unless he is proactive and finds them himself".
Containment[]
The Lowell Factory was uncovered in 1992 when the disappearances surrounding it came to the attention of the SCP Foundation. Searching the factory, they came across many anomalous items supplied by The Investor and distributed by Metzger, such as 500 radioactive rocking horses, 500 perpetually burning fur coats, 800 impossible-to-remove bowler hats that caused their wearers to expel wasps from their orifices and 200, 000 cigarettes that turned the consumer into a basking shark and made them explode. The Lowell Factory was designated SCP-748, the M-Machine SCP-748-1 and The Crucible SCP-748-2. Site-68 was established on the top floor of the Lowell Factory. At this point the Foundation were unaware of Metzger's continued existence, although they discovered his diary detailing his actions.
This would change in May 1996, when Foundation personnel retrieved a mass of bone and rust from the piping, causing a small flood which killed 11 personnel. In the aftermath of the flood, an aperture opened, revealing an extra floor. On this floor the Foundation discovered the brain machine, designated SCP-748-3, and the larger machine containing Metzger's brain, designated SCP-748-4. Dr. Paula Emerson interviewed Metzger, who bragged about how there were many more factories and claimed that his ultimate goal was "to take industry to its logical conclusion".
Escape[]
The Foundation were still unaware of Metzger's security force, who continued to operate. Over a period of months, they abducted and transformed all personnel at Site-68. They then requested Foundation equipment which they used to repair The Crucible and the M-Machine, and re-established contact with the rest of the factories, telling them to resume activity.
At an unknown time, Metzger's security destroyed Site-68, using the remains of the site for raw materials. The Foundation were unaware of this until 1999, when a number of anomalous items were sold 40 kilometres away from the site. Purchases resulted in 33 deaths and 23 serious injuries. An investigation by the Foundation came across Site-68 destroyed and heavily salvaged, and all 62 Site-68 personnel transformed into Metzger's security force. Nine Foundation agents were killed by Site-68 personnel before they managed to neutralize 12 personnel. The remaining 50 escaped and were designated SCP-748-5. After Metzger's escape, the Factory higher-ups closed the Suffolk Mill down on 27/12/1999 and moved everything to Metzger's location. Metzger then proclaimed the Factory to be "back in business".
Since then, similar influxes of anomalous materials to retailers have occurred worldwide. Audio recordings of Metzger communicating with the rest of the factories have been recovered, revealing that Metzger plans to remake the world into one of producer and consumer alone and anyone who refuses will be used as raw materials. They have so far been unable to contain the rapid expansion of Metzger's Factory.
Trivia[]
The image of Metzger is actually of Norwegian industrialist Christian Michelsen.
