Randy Adderson is one of the Socs in the book and in the 1983 movie The Outsiders. He is Bob Sheldon's best friend before becoming friends with Ponyboy after the incident. He also appears in the book, That Was Then, This Is Now, where he is a hippie who feels guilty about the class division of Greasers and Socs.

He was portrayed by Darren Dalton in the film.

Appearance

Randy has brown curly hair. Randy wears clothes like most Socs, Dress Pants and a buttoned jacket with a button-up shirt. Like Bob, Randy is good-looking to a lesser extent, taking heavy pride in his appearance.

Personality

Before Bob's death, Randy acted like a typical Soc. He had a high attitude and saw all greasers as white trash while also being as reckless as Bob. Though, it is possible that he did this out of conformity given what happens later on. After Bob's death, Randy comes to his senses and starts to feel remorseful for his actions. He becomes a much nicer person and even befriends Ponyboy. That said, the events left him feeling bitter as he knows that even if the Greasers won the rumble, it wouldn't do anything but keep the feud going . That said he eventually redeems himself for his involvement in the inccident, befriending Ponyboy and even becoming trustworthy to the point that Darry let him visit Ponyboy while the former was recovering from his injuries. He even tries to help Ponyboy realize that everything that happened wasn't his fault until Darry had to ask him to leave after Ponyboy becomes anxious.

Profile

Movie Drive-In

Randy is first seen with Bob Sheldon in Bob's Mustang. He and Bob get infuriated to see Greasers Ponyboy, Johnny, and Two-Bit befriend their girlfriends, Cherry and Marcia. As a fight was about to break out, Cherry and Marcia cool the tensions by going with their boyfriends despite knowing it wasn't the best idea.

The Park

Randy, still with Bob and now drunk, sees Ponyboy and Johnny alone in the park. Seeing as no one would help them at the hour of 2 AM, they confront the two, drunk. Bob comments saying that Greasers are White Trash, in which Ponyboy responds by saying that Socs are white trash with Mustangs and other nice things. The Socs then chase the two greasers, catching up to them quick. Randy catches Johnny and beats him down, but then helps Bob drown Ponyboy after Ponyboy shows that he was capable of retaliation. Johnny pulled out his knife and killed Bob, which caused Randy and the others to run away

Talk With Ponyboy

Randy goes to talk with Ponyboy way later in the story after Ponyboy returns from running away. Randy apologizes and reflects on the situation with Ponyboy, showing his remorse. (In the book, Randy even said that “greasers will still be greasers and Socs will still be Socs” before adding, “Sometimes I think it’s the ones in the middle that are really the lucky stiffs.”)

Randy was the only known Soc to not participate in the rumble aside from Cherry and Marica. Later, he visits Ponyboy to see how he was doing. They talk with Randy trying to reassure him that he wasn't at fault. Darry, however, makes him leave because he knew Ponyboy wasn't ready to talk about what happened. This is the last time Randy appears during the novel.

Trivia

  • Randy is the only one of the Socs to appear in That Was Then, This Is Now.
