“ | Well, if it isn't the three dorketeers! | „ |
~ Randy Betancourt to Nate, Francis, and Teddy. |
Randy Betancourt is one of the two main antagonists (alongside Gina Hemphill-Toms) of the comic strip and novel series Big Nate. He is an enemy to Nate Wright, Francis Pope, Teddy Ortiz, and various others in the series.
Randy seems to resent majority of the students at P.S. 38. In the novels, he is shown to be angry because of his poor grades and troubled family, however in other adaptions of the series, he still has poor grades, but it isn't confirmed whether or not that is the reasoning for his temper against fellow students.
Roles[]
He serves as a major antagonist in the comic strip and a minor antagonist in Big Nate: In a Class By Himself, Big Nate Goes for Broke, and Big Nate Lives It Up, one of the two main antagonists (alongside Gina Hemphill-Toms) of Big Nate Strikes Again!, the secondary antagonist of Big Nate Flips Out, an overarching character of Big Nate on a Roll and Big Nate in the Zone and the secondary antagonist of Big Nate Blasts Off.
Appearance[]
Randy is taller than most students his age, and has brown hair. He often wears an orange, red or white t-shirt with long sleeves and a pineapple on it, blue jeans and black shoes with white shoelaces. He also has one of the taller-sized heads in the comic strip.
Personality[]
“ | You made me look like a fool in the lunchroom, scrub! It's payback time! | „ |
~ Randy Betancourt to Nate Wright. |
Randy is a mean, selfish and generally snobby school bully who commonly picks on students at P.S. 38. He often loses his temper, and lash out at Nate with violence. Randy has also been shown to get Nate in trouble with the teachers, and often get him in detention sometimes for things he didn't do. He also will break the rules when mass amounts of people wouldn't know about it, like when he stole a lemon square from the bake sale and blamed it on Nate, or when he tried to shoplift a My Little Pony comic book from Gordie's store. Randy gets very embarrassed in these instances as he is also very self sensitive, and wants to have a good reputation. He makes people afraid of him to make him seem powerful. Nate claims Randy's posse are only in it, because they are scared of Randy.
Biography[]
Comics[]
In the comics, Randy has always been a mean person and is to this day. However, on later occasions, Randy has shown to be more insecure. Here are a few instances of Randy's biography out of the many years the comics have been printed.
On January 16, 2011, Francis goes up to Randy acting kindly by asking him how he was, and Randy wedgied Francis leaving him angered.
On September 11, 2011, Nate is building a sandcastle and Randy says that when Nate's done, he will knock it over. Nate claims he won't knock it over and later builds a sandcastle resembling the twin towers. Randy gets surprised and presumably doesn't want to knock it over, otherwise he would be re-enacting the events of the 9/11 disaster.
From July 30, 2012 to August 18, 2012, Randy taunts Nate about how he's going to "crush" them at the baseball match they are about to play, and Nate points out they have Chester on their team, who is really good. Coach Calhoun says that Chester is sick, so Nate panics. Randy then taunts Nate about how Kim won't hit a home run and that their best pitcher is playing, but Kim still hits a home run. Later, Randy calls Chad a butterball and "chubby" and says that it will be really easy to be score a home run. He strikes out first, and tells his team members it was too slow. He then strikes out again. Randy is angry and yells that he will send the baseball back down Chad's throat. He hits it really hard back at Chad, who catches it, which comes as a surprise to Nate's team and they congratulate Chad. The reader's don't get to see Randy's reaction to this, but we can guess he would be really angered and annoyed.
From May 22, 2017 to June 17, 2017, Randy gets caught shoplifting by Nate who is working as an intern at Klassic Komix. Randy claims he isn't so Nate tackles him to the ground. When Gordie comes, he tries to see proof that Randy did do it, and Randy shows him that there is nothing in his jacket. However Nate finds My Little Pony: Pinkie Pie Keeps a Secret in his sleeve. Randy explains how he wanted to get his cousin a present and didn't have any money. Later, Randy tries to make Nate promise not to tell anyone, but Nate won't do it. So he bribes him that he won't bully him if he keeps it a secret, which Nate agrees too. But he then finds out everyone already knows about the incident, and he shoves Nate saying that the deal's off.
From December 16 2019 to December 28 2019, Randy gets cast by DeeDee as Scrooge in a Christmas Carol Stage Play to replace Chad who was too cheerful. Randy keeps getting annoyed at himself for messing up his lines, and can't act well, being unable to portray emotions in the scenes. Five minutes before the show starts Randy gets stage fright and refuses to go on, so DeeDee forces him too.
Novels[]
“ | The last thing I need is MORE counselling. | „ |
~ Randy Betancourt muttering to himself. |
In the novels, Randy is an antagonist in the first few books, but gets reformed in Big Nate: Blasts Off.
In Big Nate: Strikes Again, Randy finds out he's a fleece ball captain and that Nate is too. He makes a remark about how he thought only people that were good at sports got to be captains. Nate opens his locker and the contents collapse on Randy. Then Principal Nichols finds out, and makes Randy clean it up. Everyone in P.S.38 starts talking about it, which makes Randy embarrassed. Nate assumes he's plotting revenge. Later, Nate finds Randy in the school-yard, and runs away, which leads to Randy chasing him. They run into Principal Nichols, so Nate tells him he was going to the computer lab to work on his Ben Franklin project. Randy claims he was doing the same thing, and Principal Nichols doesn't believe that they both have Ben Franklin projects, so he asks them "What was the name of the popular book that Ben Franklin published every year from 1732 to 1758?" and Nate immediately responds "Poor Richard's Almanack". He gets it correct so Nichols allows him to go into the computer lab, and makes Randy go back outside. Randy inspires Nate to make a Ben Franklin comic strip, and then to make "Poor Nate's Almanack" where he publicly claims that he will beat Randy's Fleeceball team at the finals. Soon after Randy is running around holding Chad's workbook and running away, teasing him. He runs straight into a table that Nate and Teddy are holding, and gets a "bloody nose", which he blames on Nate when Ms. Clarke comes. But Ms. Clarke saw him run into the table and gives Randy detention. Infuriated, Randy leaves, and as he does so, he mutters something about "tomorrow" to Nate. The next day, Randy yells at Nate about how it's "payback time", although with the injured nose it sounds like "baybag tibe". Randy hits a home run on the first pitch, and then hits it lightly to roll across the ground on the next pitch. He stomps hard on Nate's foot on purpose, claiming it was an accident.
In Big Nate: Goes for Broke, Randy loudly makes fun of Nate and DeeDee, but DeeDee says that he has no friends which angers Randy, so he takes Nates clothes from the male bathroom.
In Big Nate: Flips Out, Randy steals Mrs. Godfrey's camera and camera bag from Nate and refuses to give it back. He then checks inside it claiming it's a purse, to which Nate says it's not a purse. Coach John arrives, so Randy says it's an aeroplane and throws it far away. Later, Randy goes up to Francis and kicks his behind whilst making fun of his middle name. Nate suspects Randy stole the camera, so DeeDee goes up to Randy and faints looking around to see if she can find the camera. She can't because it's revealed he didn't and Nick Blonsky did. The next day, Nate sees Randy making fun of Francis' middle name again and attacks him. Mrs Czerwicki stops the fight, takes Nate away from Randy and punishes him by sending him to the principal's office. Later, Randy taunts Nate, Francis and Teddy about how his team with Gina will beat them at trivia. When trivia starts it's a tie for a long time, and Randy gets a sports question which makes him happy. It turns out to be about chess, so Randy is very confused, and he gets the wrong answer, leaving Nate to get one question right to win.
In Big Nate: Lives It Up, Randy starts making fun of Breckenridge's name, and is about to put his head in the toilet, until Nate tries to stop him. When he does so, a ceiling tile falls on his head causing the principal to come and Randy to run away. Near the end of the book, Randy is shown to be on Gina's scavenger hunt team, and Nate says Gina won't win because of it. Randy hears this and gets really annoyed at Nate, and later finds a suggestion box, for the thing to make the school a better place.
In Big Nate: Blasts Off, Nate runs into Randy, and Randy's about to punch him until Ruby comes, and then he stops and walks away. At the library, the next day, Nate throws all the stuff out of Nate's bag, and then wonders off. At lunch, Randy shakes up a soda can and it bursts out in Nate's face, so when Nate goes to the bathroom to get himself clean, he's there and Nate yells at him, causing Nichols to come in. Randy tells how Nate yelled at him and then leaves the bathroom. Nate's really mad at Randy afterwards, and makes an article for the school newspaper making fun of him, so Randy starts a fight with him soon after. When Nichols comes, Randy lies that Nate attacked him, and Ms Dempsey comes. She tells Nichols about how Randy is having troubles and generally bullies other students, so Nichols takes the boys to his office. He makes Randy tell the truth, tells him to do peer counselling with Nate and Gina and lets him leave. When at the peer counselling, Randy grumbles "The last thing I need is MORE counselling." to himself. Gina gets them to write how they feel about each other and Randy draws a hurtful cartoon about Nate like Nate did in the school paper. Gina makes it so that Randy and Nate are partners in the field trip next week. At the field trip, Randy admits that Nate is better at drawing then him and splits up the worksheet to make it go faster. Nolan starts beating Nate up later, and Randy comes to stop him to which Nolan responds "...that we'll settle this at the Mud Bowl!". The Mud Bowl is an ultimate frisbee match between schools. Nolan took Nate's paper, and Randy slumps onto a bench saddened about how they will get an F on the worksheet, and how he can't get another bad grade, so he can pass school and won't have to talk about with the counsellor. Randy then reveals how his parents split up and he moves between their houses each week. When they come back from the field trip, Nate throws a frisbee near Randy, who picks it up and throws it back. Nate sees how good he was at throwing the frisbee and asks him if he wants to be on his mud bowl team. However when on the team, Randy is shown to throw too hard, be rude and show-off. At the day of the mud bowl, Nolan yells at Randy how their team will win for the 37th time in a row, and Nolan's team does so until Nate switches with Randy, and Randy stops throwing to Ruby. It's a tie, and to break it, Randy throws to Nate and wins. By the end of the book, Randy and Nate are no longer enemies.
