Randy had later joined a therapy group for meteor-infected metahumans at the Isis Foundation hosted by Chloe Sullivan. Randy said the group was good for him because he didn't feel alone. Another member, Mary Pierson, insulted him and told them how people didn't like the meteor-infected and thought they were scum.
Around this same time, a mysterious serial killer began stalking the streets of Metropolis. Mary had been killed and the rest of the counseling group, including Randy, held a vigil at the place where she was killed. Having always wanted that kind of attention, Randy set himself up as a copycat. He attacked EMT Davis Bloome and Daily Planet photographer Henry James Olsen in an alley.
Clark Kent arrived and saw Davis stumbling out of an alley covered in blood and injured. Clark yelled asking where Jimmy was but Davis is pulled away by a fast-moving smoky shadow.
Clark tried to track the two of them down and saw a shadow choking Davis, but it flees at the sight of Clark. Jimmy came out of hiding and they looked for the creature together. When Clark's back was turned, the creature pulled Jimmy away behind some dumpsters, where another victim lays.
Clark saw the creature attack Jimmy and threw a large tire at him with incredible force and speed. Changing from his shadow form, the creature was revealed to be Randy. Randy was stopped by Clark Kent after he was knocked out and Jimmy took his photo. He was then taken into custody. After he was locked up, Randy was approached by Eva Greer, assistant to Tess Mercer, who noted that Randy had an alibi, for at least one of the murders that he claimed to be behind.
Something the police would soon uncover. She challenged him to say where they might find a nun's missing rosary with its onyx crucifix but Randy said nothing. Greer then gave Randy an offer to join a team of people like him, though its not known if he accepted.
