“ | ...The battle is over, I see. I do solemnly swear to every living being and every living soul. Now cometh the age of the stars. A thousand year voyage under the wisdom of the Moon. Here beginneth the chill night that encompasses all, reaching the great beyond. Into fear, doubt, and loneliness... As the path stretcheth into darkness. Let us go together. My dear consort, eternal. | „ |
~ Ranni addressing the Tarnished in the Age of the Stars ending. |
Ranni the Witch, also known as Renna, is the tritagonist of the 2022 video game Elden Ring. She is a four-armed witch that happens to be the demigod daughter of Radagon and Rennala, making her the sister of Radahn and Rykard. Interestingly enough, she also happens to be an Empyrean, in spite of not being born from a single god.
Unlike the other demigods, Ranni doesn't have any interest in seeking a Great Rune and seizing control of the Lands Between. Instead, she has her own agenda entirely different from the Shattering and has intentions of having the Tarnished assist her.
She is voiced by Aimee-Ffion Edwards.
Personality[]
Ranni is an enigmatic individual with ulterior motives that aren't entirely known initially. Aside from Morgott, she is the only other demigod that is not interested in the conflicts of Shattering, though this is primarily because of having other plans in mind.
What is known is that she detests the Golden Order and everything that represents it, as the Golden Order has been using her as a pawn and been doing everything in their power to keep her under their will. It is later revealed that Ranni desires to replace the Golden Order in favor of her own where the souls are not bound to the Erdtree and Greater Will, but instead free to live their own path in a world of darkness.
Ranni also does not seem to care much about her family, particularly her brothers and father as she intended to have Tarnished overthrow her father from the throne and have Radahn be slain so that the restraints he placed on the stars will be removed, in order free her power. The only family she truly cares for is her mother, Rennala, so much that when the Tarnished attempted to kill her, she intervened in the battle and faced the Tarnished with an illusion of Rennala.
For the most part, Ranni presents herself in a stoic and calm manner. Likewise, when the Tarnished is first introduced to her, she greets them as such in formal manner. She is prone to get flustered, however, as shown in her dialogue when Tarnished finds her as a miniature doll in the Ainsel River. Should the Tarnished continue to be in service of her and fulfill her requests, she begins to warm up to them. In the Age of the Stars ending, Ranni refers to the Tarnished as her "lord" and her "dear consort", showing that she has not just acknowledged them as being Elden Lord, but also fully acknowledged their own spouse by her side.
Quotes[]
“ | This way, Tarnished. May I have a word? A pleasure to meet thee, Tarnished. I am the witch Renna. I'd heard tell of a Tarnished hurtling about atop a spectral steed. And upon looking into the matter, the talk, I surmise, is of thee. Thou'rt posesssed of the power, no? To call forth the spectral steed named Torrent. | „ |

“ | Indeed, I am the witch Ranni. I stole a fragment of the Rune of Death, and used it to forge the godslaying black knives through fearsome rite. I did it all. | „ |
~ Ranni when questioned about of her role in the Night of the Black Knives by the Tarnished. |
“ | Upon my name as Ranni the Witch. Mother's rich slumber shall not be disturbed by thee. Foul trespasser. Send word far and wide. Of the last Queen of Caria, Rennala of the Full Moon. And the majesty of the night she conjureth. | „ |
~ Ranni during the second phase of Rennala's battle. |
“ | I thought I might expound a little further... Upon the order I envision. Mine will be an order not of gold, but the stars and moon of the chill night. I would keep them far from the earth beneath our feet. As it is now, life, and souls, and order are bound tightly together, but I would have them at great remove. And have the certainties of sight, emotion, faith, and touch... All become impossibilities. Which is why I would abandon this soil, with mine order. | „ |
