“ | What's better than a devil you don't know? A devil you do. | „ |
~ Raphael's famous quote |
Raphael, also known as the Devil, is one of the three main antagonists (alongside the Absolute and Enver Gortash) of the 2023 fantasy video game Baldur's Gate III.
He is the son of Mephistopheles, the arch-devil duke of Cania, and a powerful and manipulative cambion with grand ambitions to unite the Nine Hells under his rule and become the Archdevil Supreme. To achieve his ambitions, he uses the heroes of Baldur's Gate so they could accomplish his plans on getting the Crown of Karsus so he could gain enough power to take the Nine Hells and later on, the entire world.
Depending on the player's choice, you can either be his ally if you aid him in his goals, or if you oppose against him, he will serve as one of the player's arch-enemies, as well as the arch-enemy of Gale Dekarios of Waterdeep. He's also the arch-enemy of both Hope Hearthflame and Yurgir.
He is voiced by Andrew Wincott.
Appearance[]
In his human form, Raphael takes the form of a handsome middle-aged man with brown hair and white-tanned skin. In his true form, He has brighter red skin with dark red hair, thick and decorative horns, burning orange eyes, and a set of pointed wings with visible membranes, similar to that of a bat.
In his main attire, he wears regal clothing, which consists of a black, red, and gold jacket with a white frilly undershirt and marching band buttons, grey pants, and dark brown boots.
Personality[]
Raphael, like any other devils and cambions, is a highly arrogant and power-hungry individual with grand ambitions. Despite his position being more powerful and higher, Raphael always desires for more power, with his greatest desire to become the supreme devil of all the Nine Hells. To that end, Raphael will do anything to ensure he accomplishes his goals, no matter how many lives he may ruin in the process. He's incredibly narcissistic to the point of having slept with incubus who took the youthful form of himself and is very smug and confident about his plans, believing that the party will become desperate to the point of coming to him for assistance. He's also a firm believer in order, and as such, he desires to be in control of everything. Raphael is very controlling towards people, and is a heavily sadistic as well, as he often loves manipulating people and luring them into desperate measures, making deals with them and crushing their hopes. This is even more evident when in the House of Hope, most of his inhabitants who made deals with him are seen to be broken and crazy, due to Raphael's actions. His sadism is more noted, as he tends to torture and inflict terror on people for no other reason.
As a devil, Raphael is incredibly cunning, intelligent and manipulative, as he carefully schemes his next move without warning. Case in point, he was able to manipulate events which led to his desire result of gaining Yurgir into his service, regardless of the player convinces Yurgir to either kill himself or join forces with him. He's also heavily charismatic, as his charming looks and smooth-talking can easily sway others to his bidding and tend to tempt people to accept the deals that go in his favor. Raphael is also very willing to lie to the party about his motives, as he wishes to lure them into a false security of trust and desires to end the Blood War in the Nine Hells and unite them, when in reality, he merely wishes to conquer as many worlds as possible. This makes him even more dangerous and unpredictable, as he tends to be one-step ahead of the player and their party.
However, Raphael suffers from three major flaws that make him predictable: His arrogance, ambitions, and desire for control. Due to his power, Raphael is too overconfident in himself and believes the party stands no chance against him, and that they would be desperate to accept his deal. This proves to be his downfall, as the party can decide to break into the House of Hope and steal the Orphic Hammer, which leads to chaos into his home, something that upset Raphael greatly. He also didn't take account of Yurgir betraying him should the player convince him to side with the party against Raphael. And finally, his ambitions, which was his biggest downfall as he revealed his true intentions and the location of the Orphic Hammer, giving the party the chance to find a way to break into the House and refusing Raphael's deal. Had he not been too confident and ambitious, Raphael would've succeeded in his goals.
Trivia[]
- The name Raphael means "Gods heals" in Hebrew, and is also shared with a heavenly archangel of the same name, which is ironic giving his characteristics as a literal devil.
- Raphael has an Incubus called Haarlep with whom he regularly sleeps. Haarlep looks like a perfect copy of Raphael. If asked, the Incubus reveals that Raphael is horrible in bed, which can be mentioned to him later on and angers him immensely.
