Rauthvangi, later known as the Mad Monk "Rotwang", is an unseen supporting antagonist in the 2020 action role-playing fantasy video game Genshin Impact. He is the scholar hailing from Khaenri'ah in Universitas Magistrorum, who caught the sight of the "Pitch-Black Elysium" in a mirror and highly desired to harness it for power, delving for forbidden knowledge, which leads to his expulsion from the Universitas Magistrorum and exile. In his exile, Rauthvangi doesn't succumb to the curse of the wilderness as fellow exiles. He then traveled to Nod-Krai and eventually reached the gate towards the Pitch-Black Elysium, believing himself to be chosen for opening the path to the Abyss beyond the skies. He later joined the court of Belyi-Tsar, the previous Cryo Archon and influences him to sought rebel against the Heavenly Principles for his own cause.
History[]
Rauthvangi lived in Khaenri'ah during Eclipse Dynasty, under the rule of King Irmin. He was a novice monk who once attended the Universitas Magistrorum when he caught the sight of the "Pitch-Black Elysium" in a mirror. In which, he became obsessed for harnessing it. Later on, he delves with the forbidden knowledge, which described to be destructive towards the world and was used by the Khaenri'ahns to defy the rule of the world under the Heavenly Principles. He was tried by the court and was sentenced into expulsion and exile, presumably under the orders of King Irmin. During on trial, Rauthvangi never once defended himself, as his heart was preoccupied with the Profane Power of the Abyss. Though he has a blood of the outlanders, Rauthvangi doesn't succumb to the curse of the wilderness and becoming Hilichurls, like the other exiles once they went aboveground. And thus, he believed that he was chosen to open the path of the Abyss beyond the skies.
He wandered the nations as a travelling scholar for years, for searching pitch-black Elysium. He couldn't find the said substance despite found the oldest records, until he arrived at to Nod-Krai, which was underdeveloped at the time. He found the path of Elysium and is determined to open its gate. He then travelled to Snezhnaya and achieves the highest position as the advisor of Belyi Tsar, the previous Cryo Archon, under the name "Rotwang" because of his exceptional mastery of alchemy and astrology. Due to the earned favored position of him by Belyi Tsar, other nobles privately called Rotwang a "Mad Monk" and there are many rumors surrounding him, such as surviving the assassination attempt by a jealous rival, who tried poisoning him. Other rumors have claimed that he summoned the soul of a noble's deceased wife even though the noble publicly denounced his research.

- Rauthvangi's naturalized name, Rotwang is taken after C.A. Rotwang, the main antagonist of the 1925 Science Fiction Novel by Thea von Harbou and 1927 Science Fiction Film by Fritz Lang, Metropolis.
