| ~ Ray Campion rationalizing his crimes to Dante. |
Ray Campion is the main antagonist of the Criminal Minds episode "The Performer". He is the greedy, ruthless manager of has-been rock star Paul "Dante" Davies who manipulates an obsessed fan into committing a series of murders to promote Davies' new album.
He was portrayed by Eddie Jemison, who also portrayed Ephraim Bratt in Goosebumps, Mickey Duka in The Punisher, and Stan Perkins in Justified.
Biography[]
Campion discovered Goth rock musician Paul Davies, who performed as his vampire stage persona Dante, and builds up his career until he becomes a platinum-selling rock star, which also makes Campion rich. Eventually, however, Davies' fans tired of his vampire act and flashy stage antics, and his record sales declined. Davies, too, grew bored of being "Dante", and started abusing drugs and alcohol, which also hurt his sales. Desperate to keep the gravy train going, Campion came up with a plan: to orchestrate a series of vampiric murders and use them to promote Dante's latest album, The Liar, by writing the title on the victims' bodies in their own blood.
To that end, he approached Gina King, an obsessed, mentally ill fan who had written Dante letters begging to be his "vampire bride", and convinced her that Dante could make her a vampire if she killed for him. The murders began on Halloween night. At Campion's direction, King blindsided her victims and strangled them, and then made two puncture wounds in their throats postmortem and used the blood to write on their bodies postmortem.
"The Performer"[]
Following Dante's latest concert, Campion tells King to kill Dante fan Melody Gladford. The following week, he has King murder Brooke Dorison after Dante gives a press interview. Finally, he tells her to kill her best friend and fellow Goth, Tera Ferris, after a promotional party in which Dante had given a half-hearted performance. Despite her delusions, Gina feels remorse for these murders, particularly Tera's, so Campion promises her she can stop. Nevertheless, he manages to manipulate her into killing one more woman, Erin Hickman.
The FBI's Behavioral Analysis Unit (BAU) is called in to investigate the murders, and profile the killer as a solitary, socially inept man suffering from a mental illness that motivates him to drink human blood. They briefly consider Davies their chief suspect, believing that he has become lost in his "Dante" persona, but they eventually discover that the killer is a woman.
Agent Jennifer Jareau interviews Tera's friends to find out more about the Goth scene she hung out in, and eventually talks to King, whose nervousness when talking about Tera makes Jareau suspicious. Meanwhile, agent Spencer Reid discovered the obsessive, violent love letters King had written to Dante on the rock star's website, and deduces that she is the killer.
Panicked by Jareau's questions, King calls Campion and begs for help. Campion goes to her house to calm her down, but when Jareau shows up at her door, Campion knocks her out with a blow to the head with a shovel. He then tells King to kill her as well, needing to cover their tracks. Jareau regains consciousness, however, and arrests them both; when Campion tries to attack her, she gives him a taste of his own medicine by hitting him over the head with a shovel, knocking him out. Campion later tries to put all the blame on King, and then tells a horrified Dante that he was merely trying to "fix" his flagging career.
Both Campion and King are both imprisoned for the murders.
