Ray Carroll is a minor antagonist in Season 2 of the Netflix original series Stranger Things.

He was portrayed by Pruitt Taylor Vince, who also played Glen Fogle in Justified.

Biography[]

Ray served three tours in the Army Medical Corps during the Vietnam War before being honorably discharged in 1969. After his discharge he began working at the Hawkins National Laboratory under Dr. Martin Brenner, experimenting with psychokinetic children who were birthed as part of the MKUltra program and kidnapped from their parents. Ray was in charge of administering ECT treatments. He was also apparently responsible for maintaining discipline among the test subjects, as a flashback showed him tormenting Kali Prasad, subject number Eight, with an electric cattle prod.

In 1974, Terry Ives broke into the facility to recover her missing daughter Jane, who was subject number Eleven. She was captured before she could retrieve her daughter and Brenner ordered her strapped down and subjected to electroshock therapy to keep her from talking. At Brenner's order, Ray turned the voltage up to 450 before electrocuting Terry until her brain was damaged beyond repair, leaving her in a permanent vegetative state only able to repeat a certain series of words over and over.

Ray eventually left Hawkins and moved to Illinois with his two daughters. He was later made a target for revenge by Kali/Eight, who had formed a gang after escaping Hawkins in order to take revenge on those responsible for the experiments.

Stranger Things[]

In November 1984, Kali's gang was able to track down Ray with help from Jane/Eleven, who was able to locate him using her psychic powers. The gang broke into Ray's Illinois apartment while he was watching TV at night and, while the rest of the gang ransacked the place looking for valuables, Eleven and Kali confronted Ray for what he had done at Hawkins. Kali showed Ray a vision of their younger selves to remind him of what he did to them before she beat him with her gun and Eleven telekinetically threw him into a wall.

Ray pleaded with them to let him go, insisting he had only been following orders. When Kali ignored him he tried to bargain for his life by offering to tell them where Dr. Brenner was, revealing he had survived being mauled by the Hawkins Demogorgon the previous year. This also failed, as Eleven could simply find him with her powers if he was still alive, and, at Kali's urging, Eleven began psychically strangling Ray. However, before she could finish him off, she noticed a photo of his daughters and couldn't bring herself to deprive them of their father, deciding to spare him. Frustrated, Kali tried to shoot him herself but Eleven used her powers to disarm her. At this point the police arrived at the apartment, having been called by Ray's daughters when they heard the gang breaking in, and they were forced to make a hasty getaway, leaving Ray alive.
