Ray McKenna is the overarching antagonist of A History of Violence, which is a miniseries for the BBC Medical Drama Casualty.

He is portrayed by James Foster.

Biography[]

Ray is the son of patient Irene McKenna, who was forced to wait outside in an ambulance due to overcrowding in the Accident and Emergency department at Holby City Hospital. He had tried to push for her to be seen by a doctor due to her bad condition, but was unable to due to the overcrowding. She was finally seen when she got worse, but she passed away, much to Ray's grief. Out of anger he brutally attacked young staff nurse Ryan Firth, badly injuring and nearly killing him. Ray was taken away by security and arrested by police, and swore revenge on the staff, which included doctor Stevie Nash.

Ray's brutal attack on Ryan caused major repercussions in the emergency department, with staff fearing for their safety due to the increased violence. Stevie especially was troubled by Ryan's threats, due to previously being attacked herself in the hospital. Although Ryan pulled through, the trauma of the attack left an impact on him and he quit his job at the hospital. Stevie began to push for better security to help the staff, which included them wearing body cameras.

A month following the incident, Ray was allowed day release from prison to attend his mother's funeral. But he used the opportunity to escape police custody, and arrived in secret at the department. He confronted Stevie when she was alone in a room and attempted to convince her to change her statement and that he didn't mean to attack Ryan. Stevie refused due to the actions Ray had caused, which caused Ray to have another meltdown and react angrily. Fortunately for Stevie, a police officer arrived and took Ray away and he was returned to prison.
