Rally Mullan is a fictional character and major antagonist of the long-running ITV British soap opera Emmerdale. He appeared as a major antagonist in 2001 before becoming the main antagonist throughout 2002.

The character was portrayed by Seamus Gubbins.

History[]

Ray Mullan first came to Emmerdale towards the end of September 2001. It quickly transpired that he was a ruthless criminal who gained notoriety for his reputation as an illegitimate businessman and seasoned gangster.

When he arrived in the village, Ray arranged for both local hardman Cain Dingle and young farmer Andy Sugden to be kidnapped due to the fact they were in debt to him. It was then Ray had Cain beaten up as penance for being unable to meet the deadline of payment. Soon afterwards, Ray decided to settle himself and his illicit businesses in Emmerdale; so much so that he even managed to outbid fellow entrepreneur Rodney Blackstock for ownership of Mill Cottage.

By 2002, Ray had taken a romantic interest in barlady Louise Appleton and the pair steadily begun a relationship with each other. He soon develops a conflict with Louise’s love interest, Terry Woods, when the latter discovers Ray's true nature and the two compete against one another for Louise's affections; she ends up choosing Ray over Terry due to being blissfully unaware of Ray's nefariousness. During this time, Ray starts a business partnership with Louise's friend Charity Dingle - also Cain's estranged cousin - and her husband Chris Tate over transportation provided by Chris' family business called Tate Haulege. But they soon turn against Ray after finding out that he is harbouring illegal immigrants in some of their truck deliveries. Ray also makes an enemy out of Cynthia Daggert and her family over his attempts to evict them in order to expand his business plans. As such, Ray becomes involved in a dispute between his right-hand man Tony Bell and wayward mechanic Scott Windsor; the dispute ends with Ray killing Tony and covering up his murder after it becomes apparent that Tony's ambitions have threatened to expose Ray's criminal activities.

However, despite finding out that Ray is not who he seems to be, Louise continues to defend his character against those who resent him. This subsequently leads Ray to propose marrying Louise, but she turns him down. On Christmas Day 2002, however, Louise agrees to leave the village with Ray after she ends up getting stalked by an unknown assailant for months. Things run smoothly for Louise at first until she discovers that Ray has two cell phones, and that one of which has kept a voicemail that she left to her stalker prior to their departure. This discovery causes Louise to realize that Ray is the stalker all along. This in turn leads to her and Ray having a fight during their car journey, which ends when they suddenly crash into a viaduct; Louise is left unharmed, but Ray ie critically injured and is believed to have died from the impact.

It is then Louise rushes back to thr cottage and attempts to alert the authorities, but Ray suddenly arrives and stops Louise just before she can phone the police. An argument erupts when Ray admits to Louise that not only is he indeed the person who has been stalking her all along, but that he had recently murdered Tony to cover up his own crimes. Ray then attempts to prevent Louise from escaping him and claims that he would never hurt her. In that moment, though, Louise grabs a vase and smashes Ray with it; the result kills Ray as he falls down the stairs and ends up breaking his neck from the impact of Louise's attack on him.

The follow-up of Ray's death sees Louise telling Terry the truth after he discovers Ray dead, with the pair later going on to cover-up the circumstances behind his untimely demise. Ray's funeral takes place in January 2003, during which Louise meets his brother David at the service and subsequent will reading ceremony. Ray's torment soon impacts Louise during the breakdown og her subsequent romance with new boyfriend Matthew King. She later confesses the events of Ray's murder to policeman Martin Crowe, another of her dates, after he overhears Louise ranting about her past relationship with Ray. In 2007, when Terry later gets suspected in the murder of Matthew's father Tom King on Christmas Day 2006, Louise tries to comfort him by pointing out from a similar point of view that Ray "deserved to die".
