~ Speltzer before attacking Melanie Garrett.

Ray Speltzer is a supporting antagonist in season seven of Dexter.

He was portrayed by Matt Gerald, who has also portrayed Lyle Wainfleet in Avatar, Zandar in G.I. Joe: Retaliation, Liebo in xXx: State of The Union, and White Power Dave in All Hail the King.

Biography[]

Past[]

Ray Speltzer was born to an unnamed father and mother. At some point in time, his parents divorced and his mother began having sex with many different men. Her room was right next to his, so he heard everything, making him both resent and desire her.

He grew up to hate women, and began killing them by trapping them in an elaborate maze and bludgeoning them with an axe while wearing a helmet styled to resemble a minotaur. By the time of the episode, he has murdered two women.

Dexter[]

Buck The System[]

Ray first appears when Dexter Morgan takes out a file on him to show his sister Debra that his "code" of killing murderers who got away with it is necessary. He gathers evidence to show her that Ray is dangerous to the public.

Meanwhile, Ray is with his girlfriend, Melanie Garrett. He begins kissing and touching her, and makes her believe that he is taking her to his room to have sex. Once her guard is down, however, he overpowers her and takes her to his basement, where he has constructed an elaborate death maze.

Following a hunch, Debra goes to Ray house to keep an eye on him. When Debra sees bright flashing lights and hears loud music from his house, she goes to investigate and kicks the door down once she hears Melanie screaming. She eventually finds Ray and he manages to knock her down and her gun away.

Just as he is about to kill her, Dexter saves her by knocking him out with a wooden plank. Debra then finds Melanie viciously beaten to death. Ray wakes up while they are distracted and escapes.

Run[]

Some time later, the Miami Metro Police Department is informed that Ray has been arrested; it takes four officers to hold him down. Sergeant Angel Batista interrogates him first, playing on his quickness to anger, until Debra steps in. When she implies that Ray was sexually aroused as a child by his own mother, he flies into a rage and incriminates himself in killing Melanie, as well as saying that he wishes he had killed Debra when he had the chance. Debra then leaves, believing she has enough evidence to convict him.

However, a video is soon leaked showing police officers arresting Ray without reading him his Miranda rights and hitting him, and he is released on a technicality. Dexter decides to take Ray out permanently and goes to Ray's impounded RV to make a kill room, but Ray returns unexpectedly and the two fight until Ray knocks Dexter out.

Dexter wakes up in an abandoned building made into another one of Ray's death mazes. He finds an envelope with a single word on it, "run". He then sees an eerily calm Ray with an axe slowly walking towards him. Dexter flees to the nearest room, which is filled with mannequins and a strobe light that makes Dexter disoriented. Ray nearly kills Dexter when he confuses a pole with a horned helmet on it for Ray, but Dexter manages to tackle and pin him. Ray throws Dexter off of him and disappears thanks to all the strobe lights and mannequins obstructing him. Dexter then finds a staircase with another sign encouraging him to go further down into the building, but he instead goes up to the roof, narrowly escaping Ray by grabbing onto a nearby truck that drives away.

Ray appears again at Melanie's funeral, taunting Debra that he got away with murder. Later that night, Dexter goes to the cemetery where Ray works and purposely lets Ray spot him and leads him to an open grave with a note at the end of a shovel that simply reads "stay". Ray is distracted long enough for Dexter to knock him out with another shovel that breaks to form a stake. Dexter then takes Ray down to the crematorium.

When Ray wakes up strapped to a table, he realizes what is going on and angrily yells out, only for Dexter to mock him as he mocked Debra. Dexter then stabs Ray in the heart, and cremates his body.

Trivia[]

  • Ray Speltzer is the only antagonist in the entire series to actually scare Dexter, shown when he wakes up in Ray's maze and sees his message "Run". At first, Dexter says to himself that he runs from no one, until he sees Ray approach him wearing the bull mask and carrying an axe, then realizes he most likely wouldn't be able to win a one on one fight with him even with his advanced training.
  • Ray may be a reference to real life serial killer H.H. Holmes, as both built death mazes in their homes with the worst parts of them being built in their basements.
