Buck, if I wanted an opinion from an a--hole, I'd ask my own. Got it?
~ Ray telling off Buck.

He was portrayed by Ewan McGregor, who also played Mark Renton in the Trainspotting duology, Tom Lincoln in The Island, Terry Blaine in Cassandra's Dream, Patrick McKenna in Angels and Demons, a possessing Overlook Hotel in Doctor Sleep and Black Mask in Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn).

Biography[]

Early life[]

Ray was the younger brother of real estate mogul Emmit Stussy. After his death, their father left them his valuable collection of rare stamps and his Chevrolet Corvette C3. It was planned that Ray would keep the stamps and Emmit the Corvette. However, Emmit manipulated him into trade the stamps for the car by convincing him that it would make him popular with girls. Emmit sells all but one of the stamps, and uses the money to build a successful business, Stussy Parking Lots, which earned him the nickname "The Parking Lot King of Minnesota".

Ray, meanwhile, got a menial job as a parole officer that paid so poorly that he was frequently dependent upon Emmit for money. This generated in Ray a deep resentment towards Emmit, whom he has since blamed for all his misfortunes.

At some point, he met Nikki Swango, a paroled ex-convict he had been assigned to take under his wing. The two began a passionate relationship. Ray saw Nikki as the only strength in his failed life, longing for the success that would allow him to spend the rest of his life by her side.

2010[]

Ray and Nikki were engaged in 2010. Ray attended, accompanied by Nikki, the anniversary party of his estranged brother, Emmit, and his wife, Stella, held at their residence in Eden Prairie, Minnesota. Ray met with Emmit privately during the party to discuss his plans with Nikki, telling him that he was going to marry her and needed money to buy her a wedding ring. Emmit, backed by his business partner and confidant Sy Feltz, explained to Ray that his business was not going well and he would not accede to his request. Ray then suggested that he return the last stamp from his father's legacy collection as a way of settling their differences once and for all, leading to a small argument. In the face of Emmit's constant refusals, Ray eventually withdrew with Nikki in disappointment.

On the way home, Nikki excitedly told Ray about an upcoming bridge tournament. Knowing that leaving the state would be a violation of her parole, Ray was initially hesitant, until Nikki explained that the prize for the winning pair would make him financially independent of Emmit, after which he agreed to be her partner in the competition and make moves in his work to facilitate Nikki's movements in and out of state if required.

Ray contacts Maurice LeFay, another parolee under his wing, with whom he has arranged to meet in a bar. Once there, he hires him to steal Emmit's stamp, taking advantage of the fact that he has suspended the analysis of the urine sample, offering to throw away the results if he manages to get hold of the stamp. Maurice accepts the deal, and receives Emmit's address from Ray. Unluckily, Maurice loses the address while under the influence of drugs, so he tries to remember it without success. After a while, he tries to contact Ray so that he can get Emmit's address again, but Ray is unable to answer his call, as he meets with Nikki at the bridge tournament she had told him about. Arriving in the town of Eden Valley, which he mistakes for Eden Prairie, Maurice stops at a local gas station and steals a phone book with addresses that match the one Ray had given him. Mistaking him with Emmit, Maurice ends up selecting the address of an "Ennis Stussy", an elderly alcoholic who also happens to be the stepfather of Gloria Burgle, the local police chief. Arriving at his address, Maurice breaks into Ennis' house, who is drinking and watching television, and murders him by suffocating him with glue, in order to make the job Ray has given him easier. After a long search, Maurice takes some random stamps, and leaves the place to meet Ray and give him what he asked for. The aforementioned Ennis' stepdaughter, Gloria, learns this after returning home for a present Ennis had given her son, Nathan Burgle, for his birthday. Accompanied by Nathan, she finds Ennis' lifeless body in front of the fridge, and asks Nathan to go back to his car, after which she immediately starts sweeping the house with a shotgun, without finding the culprit of Ennis' death and theft, Maurice. Gloria's ex-husband Ron Burgle, accompanied by his husband Dale, later arrive at the scene to take Nathan with them and allow him to spend the night away from the crime scene, leaving Gloria to watch as the paramedics take Ennis' body away.

Ray and Nikki return to Nikki's flat, with Maurice waiting for them from his car, happy after placing third at the end of the bridge tournament. The two decide to get into the bath together, unaware that Maurice is following them. Maurice finally decides to go into the bathroom to inform Ray that he got what he was looking for. Ray is happy to believe that Maurice has managed to get his hands on the stamp, but everything changes when he learns that not only has he stolen from the wrong man, but that the man was killed in the process. Enraged, he tries to attack Maurice, but Maurice pulls out a gun and threatens to pull the trigger on him or Nikki. Maurice immediately demands financial compensation from Ray or else he will turn him in to the police. Fortunately, Ray manages to kill Maurice as he leaves the building, and before he gets away with it, by pulling the air conditioner out of Nikki's flat, with Nikki's help. The air conditioner in question falls three stories onto Maurice, killing him instantly. In order not to arouse suspicion, Nikki calls the emergency services and reports what happened as if it were an accident, supported by the fact that she had already filed some complaints about the maintenance of her air conditioning support. Ray quickly leaves the scene on Nikki's recommendation, in case he is informed by the relevant authorities of what happened to Maurice, having him in his custody as his parole officer.

The day after the event, Ray accesses his work database from his office to confirm that Maurice's death is considered accidental, which it turns out to be. Relieved, he returns to Nikki to tell her, who immediately informs him of Burt Lurdsman, a small businessman interested in sponsoring their bridge career. Realising the enormous stress of Maurice's death, Nikki suggests to Ray that he make amends with Emmit in some way, which he accepts. Ray visits Emmit and the two have a chat outside Emmit's house. The two realise that they are looking to make amends, and the two agree to leave their differences in the past, shaking hands. Unbeknownst to Ray, Nikki used the situation as bait, breaking into Emmit's office to hit on a stamp, while Ray was distracted. Finding a drawing of a donkey in place of the stamp, Nikki perceives it as an insult to Ray, a misunderstanding, and writes Emmit an insulting message in her own menstrual blood, leaving her tampon on his desk. When Ray expresses his regret for the relationship he has had with Emmit over the years, Nikki mistakenly tells him that Emmit was insulting him, moving the stamp because he doesn't trust him, but what actually happened was that the cleaner on site had broken the frame by accident, after which Emmit had to move it to another location. Emmit, in the company of Sy, watches in disgust at what Nikki has done in his office, while Sy promises to take care of the situation. The next day, Ray meets Sy in a coffee shop, and Sy gives him twenty dollars, warning him that it will be the last thing he will receive from Emmit, who no longer intends to support him financially or speak to him after what happened the night before. Sy leaves the place and drives his car into Ray's, accidentally hitting a waitress's car in the process.

A few days later, Ray manages to impersonate Emmit and goes to the bank where the latter keeps his money, accompanied by Nikki. There he meets Buck Olander, a banker appointed by Emmit to handle his assets, and forces him to allow him access to Emmit's account and safe deposit box. After gaining access, Ray withdraws $10,001 and unknowingly disposes of the ashes of Emmit's family pet dog, and leaves with Nikki, infuriating Emmit and Sy.

Emmit shows up at Ray's apartment and offers a truce: he will give Emmit the stamp if Emmit gives back the money. Ray, refuses, however, having finally had enough of his brother's sanctimonious attitude. A scuffle ensues between the brothers in which the glass casing containing the stamp shatters, and the jagged edge cuts Ray's throat, killing him.

Trivia[]

  • He is the second main character to die in a non-finale episode of the series. The first was Floyd Gerhardt in the second season.
  • The conflict between Ray and his brother Emmit is an analogy to the biblical story of Esau and Jacob. Both Jacob and Emmit used persuasion in their respective stories to take a gift or good reserved for their brothers; Jacob, on the one hand, took advantage of Esau's hunger to snatch his birthright in exchange for a plate of lentils, while Emmit took the valuable collection of rare stamps originally bequeathed to Ray by making him believe that the Corvette would bring him luck with the girls. This same story is mentioned by V.M. Varga at some point in the series.
