To sell out your friends and save your own ass? It's despicable! That's one ride I would have loved to have been along on!
~ Ray Curto's ironic statement about betrayal.

Raymond "Buffalo Ray" Curto is a supporting antagonist in the HBO Television Series The Sopranos.

He is a caporegime of the DiMeo Crime Family in New Jersey and is revealed to be a long-time informant for the FBI and is also clever enough to manipulate and use his charm to make himself look innocent to the rest of his fellow mobsters.

He was portrayed by George Loros.

Biography[]

Buffalo Ray is introduced in the first season and is a seemingly loyal member of the DiMeo Crime Family, but it is later revealed that he has been working as an informant for the FBI for many years. This dual life makes his character particularly intriguing, as he manages to maintain his position within the Mafia while secretly providing information to law enforcement.

Season 2[]

Ray Curto makes his first appearance in the episode "House Arrest." He is present at a meeting with Tony Soprano and other members of the family. At this point, his role as an informant is not yet known to the audience.

Season 3[]

In the episode "Another Toothpick," Ray is seen attending a barbecue at the Soprano household. He interacts with other mobsters, maintaining his facade as a loyal capo. His role as an informant is revealed in the episode "Army of One," where he is shown meeting with FBI Agent Robyn Sanseverino. This revelation adds a layer of tension to his character, as the audience now knows he is betraying his criminal associates.

Season 4[]

Ray continues to provide information to the FBI. In the episode "For All Debts Public and Private," he is seen talking to Agent Sanseverino about the internal dynamics of the Soprano crew. He appears briefly in the episode "Eloise," attending a meeting with Tony and other capos. His role as an informant adds an element of suspense to these scenes, as viewers are aware of his double life.

Season 5[]

In Season 5, Ray's appearances are less frequent, but he continues to act as an informant. In the episode "Rat Pack," he is seen at a sit-down with Tony and other mobsters. His interactions are always underlined by the tension of his secret betrayal. In the episode "All Due Respect," Ray is shown meeting with the FBI again, providing them with valuable information about the inner workings of the DiMeo Family. More importantly, Ray has a birthday party with the rest of his gangster friends with him presenting his manipulative nature with it also being revealed that he was born in December of 1929.

Season 6[]

Ray Curto's storyline comes to an end in the episode "Members Only." He is seen driving his car while talking to Agent Sanseverino on the phone. Suddenly, he suffers a heart attack and dies behind the wheel. His death is significant because it means that the FBI loses a key informant within the Soprano organization. Ray Curto's character is a fascinating study of duplicity and survival. His ability to navigate the dangerous waters of organized crime while secretly working with the FBI showcases the complex and often contradictory nature of individuals involved in such high-stakes environments. His sudden death in Season 6 serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictable nature of life in the Mafia.

Trivia[]

  • Of all known FBI informants on The Sopranos, Ray Curto was by far the most compliant. Not only willing to disclose critical information on Tony and his crew, which he planned to verify in court, but even offering to wear a wire himself without the FBI ordering him to do so.
