“ | Ray, as he insisted we call him, was different. He couldn’t have been much older than 30, and he let his brown hair grow long – not by today’s standards, I suppose, but it would have sent any of the crew-cut authoritarians into a red-faced rage. He was friendly and approachable, but didn’t seem like he was trying to be our friend. He was easygoing and smiled a lot. But there was something in his eyes that made me wary of trying to take advantage of him. | „ |
~ Ronal Sinclair on Raymond Fielding. |
Raymond Fielding is a minor antagonist of the Rusty Quill horror podcast The Magnus Archives.
He was a young Catholic man and a servant of the godlike entity known as the Web in the late 60s and early 70s. As part of a wider plan of his master, he took over the paranormal house on Hilltop Road, turning into a halfway house for children, who he would sacrifice to his deity. He was notably the temporary guardian of Agnes Montague, who disrupted his plans.
Appearance[]
Raymond Fielding was a young man, appearing in his mid-twenties when he died. He looked approachable and had longish brown hair and a clean-shaven face.
Personality[]
Raymond gave off a likeable impression, and generally seemed like a kind, friendly, and trustworthy person. This wasn't entirely a facade, but he also didn't seem to genuinely have any benevolent feelings towards anyone around him and kept to himself. He seemed to have no problem sentencing his children to horrific fates after raising them for years, but also didn't seem to feel any particular malice towards any of them and never showed any signs of sadism. He was extremely Catholic, but also fully devoted to the Web, and the only time he showed anger was when he had difficulty serving his master.
Biography[]
Raymond was presumably indoctrinated to the way of the web at a young age by his father, Alfred, who left him the house when he died, linking his soul to it. With the support of the local Catholic Church, which he was an active member of, Raymond turned Hilltop Road into a foster home for troubled children.
Using the power of the Web, Raymond ensured the obedience of the sometimes-dangerous children he raised, subtly hypnotizing them to prevent them from leaving or openly defying him, while generally letting them do what they wanted otherwise. When they came of age, he would take them down to the basement, where he made them eat a special apple. The apple would slowly kill them while infesting their bodies with baby spiders, who would eventually rip out of them and into the world.
At some point in time, Raymond was contacted by the Cult of the Lightless Flame, who wanted him to raise their messiah, a young and powerful girl named Agnes Montague. For unknown reason, Raymond agreed, and took Agnes into his house, acting as a father to her. However, Raymond was betrayed by Agnes when she showed a child in his house named Ronald Sinclair what was happening in the basement. Agnes freed Ronald from Raymond's hypnotism for long enough for the boy to escape. This seemed to have started a conflict between Raymond and Agnes, and he was eventually immolated by her, although she kept his hand.
Raymond's soul remained attached the house, although he was unable to do anything with it. In the early 2000s, he met Ivo Lensik, a man working to rebuild the house, and hinted to him how to kill Agnes. Lensik did end up killing the young woman, but no one ever saw Raymond again.
Powers and Abilities[]
Due to being an avatar of the Web, Raymond seemed to be in possession of a subtle kind of hypnotism. He was capable of influencing the actions of his children without them noticing, although if he needed them to do something, he was able to completely override their free-will. Despite this, he was not nearly as powerful as Agnes Montague, who was easily able to counteract his control.
