Raymond Washburn is the secondary antagonist of the Spencer novel "Crimson Joy". Washburn is a copycat killer modelling off "Red Rose Killer" Gordon Felton, with the intention of killing his own wife and then taking credit for all the murders.

Biography[]

Little is revealed about Washburn. He had marital problems with his wife Emmeline, a schoolteacher, so he decided to murder her for wanting to leave him. He killed her akin to the Red Rose Killer's M.O.: tying her up while she's nude, shooting her through her vagina, and leaving a red rose between her breasts. When the police arrived, he put on an act of grief, shock, and needing to be caught in a detective's arms. As the police and Spencer saw through the obvious differences, they knew Washburn was guilty, but only of Emmeline's murder. However, after Washburn was arrested, he confessed to all the murders. Everyone knew he was lying, but the news picked up on the false confessions. So did Felton, who was furious and escalated his campaign by threatening his psychologist, Dr. Susan Silverman, who was coincidentally the girlfriend of Spencer, with a red rose in her home. Th e confessions didn't hold for Washburn, and he was only imprisoned for Emmeline's murder. Felton would also later be arrested, only to commit suicide in prison.
