~ Merrett Frey describing Raymund's murder of Catelyn Stark. |
Ser Raymund Frey is a minor antagonist in the A Song of Ice and Fire novel series. He is the eleventh son of Walder Frey and the sixth from his marriage to Amarei Crakehall. He is married to Lady Beony Beesbury and has seven children: Robert, Malwyn, Sarra, Serra, Cersei, Tywin, and Jaime Frey.
Raymund is infamous for his role in the Red Wedding, in which he murdered Lady Catelyn Stark, the widow of the late Lord Eddard Stark and the mother of Robb Stark, the King in the North. Catelyn’s murder by Raymund led to the events that resulted in her revival as the vengeful Lady Stoneheart.
Biography[]
At the Twins, Raymund Frey was introduced to Catelyn Stark while he was sitting in the great hall of the castle and drinking with his family, which includes his elder brother Hosteen Frey, his half-brother Lothar Frey, his goodbrother, Lord Lucias Vypren, the latter’s son, Ser Damon Vypren, and members of House Haigh.
During the Red Wedding, Smalljon Umber, the son of the Greatjon, bludgeons Ser Raymund across the face with a leg of mutton, but is then killed by Northmen under the command of Lord Roose Bolton. After Roose murders King Robb Stark, in which he stabbed him in the chest, Catelyn Stark, Robb’s mother, who watched her son’s death with her own eyes, kills Walder Frey’s half-nephew Aegon "Jinglebell" Frey, in retaliation.
Though the Freys had intended to keep her alive as a hostage, Catelyn, seeing her son murdered in front of her by Lord Bolton, began having a hysterical fit from a mixture of grief and shock, and she claws at her own face with her fingernails in an act of madness while letting out uncontrollable laughter.
The Freys, appalled by this, realized that Catelyn has gone mad and Ser Raymund Frey mercy kills her by slitting her throat so as to end her misery. In act of mockery of House Tully’s funeral customs, the Freys stripped Catelyn’s body naked before dumping it in the Green Fork. This ultimately backfired when three days later, Catelyn’s body was founded by Nymeria, the direwolf of Arya Stark, who drags the corpse from the river. As Arya was dreaming of her direwolf at that time, her ability to see through Nymeria’s eyes allowed her to realize that her mother is dead, leaving Arya devastated and she became deeply depressed.
Shortly after being brought out of the river, Catelyn’s body was discovered by Lord Beric Dondarrion and the Brotherhood without Banners. Beric would then sacrifice his own life to resurrect Catelyn through the Kiss of Life, resulting in her revival. Unlike in her previous life, Catelyn, now known as Lady Stoneheart and completely devoid of all humanity, developed a strong thirst for vengeance against those responsible for the Red Wedding and the deaths of her family, including the Freys.
