Rayne Royce is a fictional character and major antagonist of the Channel 4 British soap opera drama Hollyoaks. She served as the show's secondary antagonist throughout 2023 before later appearing in January 2024 as the posthumous catalyst in her own titular storyline "Who Killed Rayne Royce?".
She was portrayed by Jemma Donovan.
Biography[]
Rayne Royce was born on 9th January 2000. She grew up to become a renowed social media influence and was also best friends with her childhood companion Lacey Lloyd. Together they shared a flat whilst studying at University, and Lacey subsequently became Rayne's 'assistant' when she became an influencer as well. It was then Rayne fell out with her estranged mother Piper Rayner due to the latter's opposition towards the former's career path. In 2023, Rayne arrived in Hollyoaks to find Lacey after learning that she had started her job there. The pair reunited and ended up moving into a house-share together.
Upon establishing her business with Lacey in the area and also settling herself at the same time, Rayne became acquainted with Romeo Nightingale; he was well received by her fans on her social media business. Soon enough they began dating a few times and started a relationship with each other, with Romeo even helping Rayne out with some of her promotional videos to the point of livestreaming various declarations of his love for her.
However, while it seemed as though as Rayne was friendly and respectful towards everyone around her, it soon turned out that she secrectly exhibits a rather sinister streak. This is first unveiled when she fell for a scam and ended up fundraising for a fake charity, which was eventually uncoverd later on. Then when Romeo tried to offer his support, Rayne lashed out at him and insulted his mother Donna-Marie Quinn when arguing with him about her career problems. Things later appeared to got worse when intimate photographs of Romeo and Rayne taken in the photobooth outside of The Loft some weeks earlier were leaked online. But it later turned out that Rayne was behind this in order to gain attention and sympathy online for her social media following; Romeo became unaware of what Rayne had done and she convinced him into forgiving her outbust earlier on.
Not long afterwards, Rayne began controlling Romeo to the point of isolating him from his family and closest friends - even lying to him about having a lump no sooner after his sister Juliet had died. It was then Rayne's emotional abuse towards Romeo later became physical when she shoved him into a glass table in a fit of rage. However, Rayne continued tricking Romeo into forgiving him and further turned him against his family when they began to grow apprehensive of their relationship; Romeo often sided with Rayne over his family as their efforts to make him see sense only distance himself even further. By then, Rayne became enemies with Romeo's love interest Peri Lomax when she deduced her true nature.
At somepoint, Rayne tells Romeo about her previous boyfriend Brent Taylor and claims that he committed suicide years ago. But then Peri began digging into Rayne's past with the help from Romeo's father James Nightingale and they soon tracked down Brent's mother Cheryl, who revealed to them that Brent was actually still alive. However, it turned out that Rayne was still in contact with Brent and she ordered him to kidnap Peri under the guise of reconciling with him. This seemed to work and Rayne continued to assert her control over Romeo by getting him to help in her plans on winning over social media manager Faye Fuller, such as planning a grand party at a manor.
In September 2023, the party took place and Rayne was on the verge of succeeding with her ambitions. However, Peri then reappeared with Brent and they exposed Rayne's true colors - with Peri having learned that Rayne had been controlling and abusing Brent in the same way she had been doing to Romeo. It was then Rayne's abusive nature was exposed as well when Peri outed her actions against Romeo, who finally stood up to Rayne after learning the extent of her character. Rayne then insulted everyone before going out for a walk. Among the people she insulted had included Lacey, who disowned her; Brent, who swore revenge on her; Peri, who also vowed to make her regret her actions; and James, who wanted retribution for his son's abuse.
Later on, Rayne is found dead in a swimming pool. It was then a murder investigation took place and the circuimstances behind her death remained unknown until the truth was finally revealed in January 2024. It was revealed that Romeo was the killer when Rayne confronted him on the pool that day. She blamed him for losing everything and tried to attack him, but he accidentally shoved her into the pool in self-defense; Rayne died after she drowned as a result.
