You make me sound like a monster. I'm not turning people into anything, I'm fixing humanity's weaknesses!
~ D.A. Sinclair explaining his motives to William.
Did you know this experiment started out as a way to reanimate dead tissue-- To create life where there was none? I wanted a Nobel Prize-- I wanted to reunite grandmothers and loved ones. I wanted to do good. Little did I know what my studies would lead me to. What doors I would blow open with my research. Where I sought to create life I succeeded in creating death. You know, Newton discovered gravity by accident. What I have created is not merely a process with which to reanimate life-- but it is the ultimate killing machine.
~ D.A. Sinclair's motive rant in the comic continuty.

The ReAnimen are supporting characters in the Image Comics series Invincible and its animated adaptation of the same name.

They were, originally, the dead corpses of various individuals enhanced beyond human condition by D.A. Sinclair via cyborgization. Originally, the ReAnimen were made as a means to do good: as a way to reunite the dead with their family members and loved ones, however, Sinclair quickly realized the potential of them as weapons.

After his defeat at the hands of Invincible, D.A Sinclair was secretly offered a position in the Global Defense Agency by its director Cecil Steadman himself in exchange of his loyalty. Rehabilitated and now armed with practically limitless resources and bodies at his disposal, D.A. Sinclair built a stronger and perfected version of his ReAnimen out of deceased military bodies as an instrument of justice.

Appearance[]

First Generation[]

In the comics, the first generation ReAnimen appeared to be heavily decomposed cadavers mobilized solely by the plethora of rudimentary bolted cybernetics improvised from various pieces of scrap attached to their bodies. The cybernetics covered most of their body down from their legs to their upper torso - the only part not enhanced by Sinclair was, presumably, their non-dominant arm. The ReAnimen's dominant arm was also replaced by a three-fingered prosthetic with visible joints.

Their legs were replaced with black sleek, two-fingered athletic-like prosthetics, allowing them to run faster than even the fastest humans alive. The ReAnimen's heads were covered almost completely by a white helmet with a chin strap, which left the decomposed bottom of their face exposed. The helmet also had a small red optic lens, equipped with an interface to allow easier control on Sinclair's part.

In the Animated Series, the first generation ReAnimen instead take the appearance of their second generation counterparts.

Second Generation[]

The second generation of ReAnimen was still made with the same cybernetic equipment as their predecessors, albeit with a few improvements to accommodate for Sinclair's now living subjects. The helmet in particular was redesigned to have a wider optic lens, as well as the complete removal of the chin strap, presumably because the helmets were now attached to the user's head.

In the Animated Series, the second generation ReAnimen were made with GDA resources and took the appearance of their first generation counterparts.

Third Generation[]

After obtaining the limitless funding and resources from the GDA, the newest model of ReAnimen received a complete overhaul; the prospect of using living subjects was obviously completely discarded, in exchange for using the fresh bodies of fallen soldiers. The cybernetics now have a golden coloration instead of their previous silver, and they were present in both arms instead of just one. They have American flag decors on most of their cybernetics, as well as camouflage printing on their prosthetic legs, as to show respect for their service. Their helmets were now bolted to their head, and now they had an additional optic lens on their chins.

In the Animated series, they mainly keep the same appearance, but their necks are now covered by a black prosthetic "armor," much like the previous models.

Fourth Generation[]

The fourth generation of ReAnimen were made out of the fallen corpses of the fallen Alternate Marks at the aftermath of the Invincible War event. Although it was difficult for Sinclair and his team to even create equipment capable of cutting through Viltrumite flesh, they were eventually done after months of hard labor. The ReAnimarks were the most powerful iteration of the ReAnimen on-screen - in spite of looking relatively unenhanced on the surface, it's heavily implied that all of their robotic enhancements are underneath their skin, explaining their unnaturally buff physique.

Trivia[]

  • In the comics, Rick was actually the first living subject to be mechanically enhanced into a ReAnimen. This is changed in the TV Show, where the ReAnimen were always living subjects until Cecil's intervention.
