You make me sound like a monster. I'm not turning people into anything, I'm fixing humanity's weaknesses!
~ D.A. Sinclair explaining his motives to William.
Did you know this experiment started out as a way to reanimate dead tissue-- To create life where there was none? I wanted a Nobel Prize-- I wanted to reunite grandmothers and loved ones. I wanted to do good. Little did I know what my studies would lead me to. What doors I would blow open with my research. Where I sought to create life I succeeded in creating death. You know, Newton discovered gravity by accident. What I have created is not merely a process with which to reanimate life-- but it is the ultimate killing machine.
~ D.A. Sinclair's motive rant in the comic continuty.
Debbie: What are those things?
Cecil: Dead soldiers... serving their country one last time, thanks to that monster over there.
~ Cecil Stedman explaining the ReAnimen to Debbie Grayson.

The ReAnimen are supporting characters in the Image Comics series Invincible and its animated adaptation of the same name.

They were, originally, the dead corpses of various individuals enhanced beyond human condition by D.A. Sinclair via cyborgization. Originally, the ReAnimen were made as a means to do good: as a way to reunite the dead with their family members and loved ones, however, Sinclair quickly realized the potential of them as weapons.

After his defeat at the hands of Invincible, D.A Sinclair was secretly offered a position in the Global Defense Agency by its director Cecil Steadman himself in exchange of his loyalty. Rehabilitated and now armed with practically limitless resources and bodies at his disposal, D.A. Sinclair built a stronger and perfected version of his ReAnimen out of ethically provided and donated deceased military bodies as an instrument of justice.

History[]

Background[]

The initial ReAniman was a tipsy college student named Doug Cheston, who was seized by Sinclair and turned into a cybernetic zombie. He battled Invincible and almost triumphed until he removed his helmet, exposing his real face. Appalled by his transformation, the cyborg took his own life in a condition of depressive insanity.

Three others, including Rick, who is William's ex-boyfriend, participated in the abduction of William to transform him into another ReAniman. Invincible battled all three, which almost led to his demise, until William managed to assist Rick in escaping Sinclair's influence and overcoming the other two. Cecil and the G.D.A. took all three away in the hopes of reversing their modifications.

Used by The GDA[]

During his time in G.D.A. custody, Sinclair produced three more ReAnimen. Cecil stated that they were "Dead soldiers. Serving their country one last time" Their technology could keep Omni-Man at a distance, having previously matched Invincible's power. All three ReAnimen battled against Omni-Man, managing to hold their position for some time. Nevertheless, Omni-Man quickly dispatched them—decapitating one, crushing the skull of another, and tearing the third apart before inserting a probe into its exposed insides. This elicited revulsion from everyone in the GDA and frustration from Sinclair regarding the ruin of his inventions, as he broke a keyboard before being escorted out.

Once Omni-Man departed from Earth, Cecil instructed Sinclair to begin developing thousands of enhanced ReAnimen as a response to the Viltrumites.

Anissa's Arrival[]

Sinclair would remain employed by the G.D.A. and Cecil, assigned with the goal of developing stronger ReAnimen that might be able to compete with or overcome the Viltrumites. Cecil reached out to Sinclair during his tasks when he was informed of the Viltrumite Anissa's arrival by Invincible. Sinclair was focused on the ReAnimen and was irritated by Cecil's interruption, who insisted on asking how many ReAnimen were prepared for deployment, intending to utilize them against Anissa. Although he was initially puzzled, Sinclair promptly clarified that none of the ReAnimen were prepared and that they had settled on a timetable.

Helping the Guardians[]

During the conflict with Doc Seismic, the ReAnimen, along with Darkwing II, arrive to assist the Guardians of the Globe in defeating Doc Seismic and his army.

Turnabout[]

Upon learning that the ReAnimen and Darkwing II belonged to the G.D.A, Invincible confronted Cecil regarding the matter. Nevertheless, Cecil countered with combative strategies, including dispatching a legion of ReAnimen after Invincible to compel his compliance.

After Cecil disclosed that he had placed a sonic device in his head, Invincible rushed to the Guardians' HQ to ask for assistance from his allies. Soon after Invincible showed up, Cecil and the ReAnimen came as well, trying to make him yield. Upon seeing the scenario, a number of the Guardians decided to help Invincible and started battling the ReAnimen. Invincible and the Guardians fought against waves of these creatures and succeeded in defeating all of them while deactivating Cecil's device as well. Cecil attempted to rationalize his behavior, but this incited a response from Invincible, who threatened Cecil and asserted that he was finished working for him.

After this incident, multiple Guardians began tidying up their HQ from the chaos left by the battle, which included the remains of vanquished ReAnimen. Nonetheless, the experience led several of them to feel disenchanted with Cecil and his methods, like employing the ReAnimen, ultimately opting to leave, while some decided to remain.

Accusing Cecil[]

When Invincible discovered a strange device monitoring him and his family, he quickly deduced that it was connected to Cecil and the G.D.A. Invincible charged into the Pentagon to face his former boss and confronted the ReAnimen, defeating many before being overwhelmed by sonic emitters and captured. When Cecil disclosed that the surveillance equipment was not his, the ReAnimen allowed Invincible to leave, but he departed after assuring Cecil that this was not over.

Invincible War[]

The ReAnimen join the fight when malevolent versions of Invincible strike. Throughout the battle, they succeed in eliminating multiple variants.

On the first day, the ReAnimen eliminate Flaxan Invincible with the help of sonic emitters and brutally beat his remains until Cecil commands them to cease. On the second day, multiple ReAnimen are transported to where Invincible and an injured Atom Eve are, to confront Omni-Invincible and Veil Invincible, giving the G.D.A. time to take the two heroes to a hospital. The ReAnimen persist in battling the wicked variants, with a few of them managing to subdue Bulletproof Invincible and snap his neck.

Advent of Conquest[]

When Conquest arrived and started fighting Invincible, Cecil quickly understood the situation. He was understandably frustrated by the timing of the Viltrumite's arrival, especially since the world was still recovering from the devastation caused by the Invincible War. Cecil quickly headed to the laboratories where Sinclair and several other researchers were trying to transform the bodies of Invincible variants into ReAnimen. Unfortunately, none were prepared for this task because the bodies of the Invincible variants were significantly tougher and more challenging to work with than those of regular humans. According to Sinclair, cutting through their muscle tissue was akin to cutting through rock. This situation only added to Cecil's frustration.

After Invincible and Atom Eve defeated Conquest, Cecil checked in with Sinclair, who mentioned that it was not possible to hasten the conversion of the Invincible variants into ReAnimen. Cecil highlighted the strength of Conquest and expressed concern that his defeat would likely lead to more Viltrumites arriving, which Sinclair reluctantly agreed to. He then instructed Sinclair to complete the work on the Invincible ReAnimen as quickly as possible, regardless of the cost.

Viltrumite War[]

Following the Graysons joining the Coaltion, the ReAnimen were temporaily haulted as Omni-Man returned after war to declare it over.

Later Years[]

The ReAnimen would not have a promiment role in the series unless Invincible would arrive to the Pentagon and white Room, where Cecil showcased the new and improved ReAnimen.

When Robot began his new world order, he took Cecil and the Re-Animen imploding the Pentagon, along with the White Room.

While Sinclair joined Robot briefly, he along with the Immortal managed to stop Robot and used what was left of the ReAnimen to stop him.

Ultimately the ReAnimen were finally decommissioned, and were surpassed by Robot's volcanic drones.

Appearance[]

First Generation[]

In the comics, the first-generation ReAnimen appeared as heavily decomposed cadavers, driven solely by a variety of rudimentary cybernetics that were improvised from scraps and attached to their bodies. Most of their bodies, from the legs to the upper torso, were covered in these enhancements, while their non-dominant arm remained unaltered, presumably untouched by Sinclair. Their dominant arm was replaced by a three-fingered prosthetic that featured visible joints.

Their legs were replaced with black sleek, two-fingered athletic-like prosthetics, allowing them to run faster than even the fastest humans alive. The ReAnimen's heads were covered almost completely by a white helmet with a chin strap, which left the decomposed bottom of their face exposed. The helmet also had a small red optic lens, equipped with an interface to allow easier control on Sinclair's part.

In the Animated Series, the first generation ReAnimen instead take the appearance of their second generation counterparts.

Second Generation[]

The second generation of ReAnimen was still made with the same cybernetic equipment as their predecessors, albeit with a few improvements to accommodate for Sinclair's now living subjects. The helmet in particular was redesigned to have a wider optic lens, as well as the complete removal of the chin strap, presumably because the helmets were now attached to the user's head.

In the Animated Series, the second generation ReAnimen were made with GDA resources and took the appearance of their first generation counterparts.

Third Generation[]

After obtaining the limitless funding and resources from the GDA, the newest model of ReAnimen received a complete overhaul; the prospect of using living subjects was obviously completely discarded, in exchange for using the fresh bodies of fallen soldiers. The cybernetics now have a golden coloration instead of their previous silver, and they were present in both arms instead of just one. They have American flag decors on most of their cybernetics, as well as camouflage printing on their prosthetic legs, as to show respect for their service. Their helmets were now bolted to their head, and now they had an additional optic lens on their chins.

In the Animated series, they mainly keep the same appearance, but their necks are now covered by a black prosthetic "armor," much like the previous models.

Fourth Generation[]

The fourth generation of ReAnimen were made out of the fallen corpses of the fallen Alternate Marks at the aftermath of the Invincible War event. Although it was difficult for Sinclair and his team to even create equipment capable of cutting through Viltrumite flesh, they were eventually done after months of hard labor. The ReAnimarks were the most powerful iteration of the ReAnimen on-screen - in spite of looking relatively unenhanced on the surface, it's heavily implied that all of their robotic enhancements are underneath their skin, explaining their unnaturally buff physique.

Powers & Abilities[]

  • Superhuman Strength: ReAnimen have been shown to possess incredible strength, being able to cause major injuries against Invincible and subdue Omni-Man for a while.
  • Superhuman Durability: Multiple ReAnimen were capable of withstanding several blows from Omni-Man.
  • Superhuman Endurance: ReAnimen possess immense resistance to pain and stress, able to survive and continue fighting despite severe injuries due to their cybernetic parts unless significantly damaged.
  • Enhanced Speed: ReAnimen were comparable to Invincible and Omni-Man in terms of speed and reflexes.

Trivia[]

  • In the comics, Rick was actually the first living subject to be mechanically enhanced into a ReAnimen. This is changed in the TV Show, where the ReAnimen were always living subjects until Cecil's intervention.
  • The Reanimen are likely based on Prime Sentinels.
  • But they might be based on the Universal Soldier Group based on Universal Solider from 1993, as Cecil's variation are similar as the U.S group were deceased vietnam soldiers that were reanimated by the Government to perform Miltary tasks.
  • They are basically Necrobots with superpowers.
