For our sins in our past life we have been brought back in the form of our enemy. That gives us their size, their strength, the speed. And with our training, that's a pretty potent mix.
~ Quaritch to his troops.

Recombinants, also known as Recoms or Project Phoenix, are fully sentient avatar bodies that are embedded with the electronic memories of humans, who are created and in service of the Resources Development Administration and serve as the secondary antagonists of the 2022 film Avatar: The Way of Water, the second installment of the Avatar franchise.

The recoms, with their Navi-bodies can engage in the natural terrain of Pandora much better than the human operatives of RDA, and thus the first unit brought online were deceased soldiers of the SecOps, notably Miles Quaritch and Lyle Wainfleet.

History[]

Background[]

In case you haven't figured it out yet, you're Colonel Miles Quatrich. Only younger, taller, bluer... and not nearly as good-looking. In two hours, I fly a mission against the Navi's stronghold. The powers that be thought it prudent that I do this backup just in case. And if you are watching it, well... It means that I did get my ticket punches. Hey, Parker... just what the hell am I supposed to say now?... Anyway, the idea... Is to get the minds of the saltiest on world operators. Yeah, like Corporal Wainfleet over there... and you're humble narrator into recombinant bodies. You're a recom now, Colonel... loaded with my memories and my charm. What you won't remember is my death because it hasn't happened yet and it ain't gonna.
~ Quaritch recording his final message before the Battle of the Tree of Souls.

Most, if not all, recombinants were backed up from the memories of the SecOps before they went to fight in the Battle of Tree of Souls. Among these were colonel Miles Quaritch, head of security at Hell's gate, corporal Lyle Wainfleet, as well as as privates Sean Fike and Zdinarsk.

Arrival on Pandora[]

Well whatever happened, if you're any clone of mine, you'll be looking for some payback. And Jake Sully would be at the top of that list. Remember kid, a marine can't be defeated. Oh, you can kill us but we'll just regroup in hell. Semper fi.
~ Human Quaritch to his future recom-self.

The first recombinant-unit, which consisted of a dozen "resurrected" SecOps soldiers who died in the Battle of Tree of Souls (including Miles Quaritch and Lyle Wainfleet) arrived on Pandora a year after RDA re-established their presence on the moon with their new headquarters at Bridgehead-city. The team was tasked by General Frances Admore, the new head of RDA-operations, to hunt down Jake Sully and his allies who were attacking RDA-transports. Since the recoms were Na'vi, the could operate in the terrain of Pandora much better than humans soldiers, and were not seen as foreign by the fauna.

First attempt at Jake Sully[]

Colonel Quaritch and Wainfleet led their troops the floating Hallelujah Mountain of Pandora, were Sully was speculated to have been hiding with his allies. On the way they found the old remain of human-Quaritch, the team learning that he had died at the hands of a Na'vi. The team would then come across several young Na'vi, who happened to be the children of Jake Sully (Lo'ak, Tuk and Kiri) as well as a teenaged human boy named Spider. The soldiers took the children as hostages, hoping to lure Sully out, but they underestimated Sully and his mate Neytiri, who ambushed the team during the night.

The recombinants lost Warren, Sean Fike, Walker, Brown and Zhang in this ambush and Sully managed to save all of his children. Still, Quaritch managed to capture Spider and bring him back to Bridgehead-city.

Recruiting Spider & taming ikrans[]

All right, listen up. Jake Sully has gone underground, don't matter wherever he is we'll find him and his batshit crazy wife too. To do so, we go Na'vi. Full tilt all the way. That means we eat Na'vi, we ride Na'vi, think Na'vi.
~ Quaritch to Wainfleet, Zdinarsk, Ja, Lopez, Mansk & Prager.

Spider Socorro refused to break under the torture of General Ardmore, and Quaritch managed persuade her to use a more civil way of getting close. It turns out that Spider was actually the human-Quaritch's son with another deceased SecOps-member, Paz Socorro, and the colonel had grown compassionate to the boy. Quaritch managed to manipulate Spider into joining him and the surviving recombinants back to forrest as a field advisor and translator, since the boy was fluent in the language of na'vi.

Quaritch new strategy was to become the enemy: the recombinants were to eat, walk and even talk like the na'vi, as well as use the wildlife to their benefit. This started by taming ikrans, the flying mount of the na'vi. The recoms and Spider climbed to Banshee Rookery, with the original plan being to tranquillise the creatures and then bond with them, but when Spider mocked the soldiers by stating that teenaged na'vi used their bare hands, Quaritch decided to go the natural route. In the end he and his team managed to bond with the ikrans and flew back to Bridgehead-City.

Teaming up with Cetacean Operations[]

Ardmore and Quaritch found out that Jake Sully was hiding in the reefs of Pandora, so the recombinants teamed up Cetacean Operations, who were hunting the whale-like tulkun in the Oceans on the moon with a massive ship called the Sea Dragon. The captain of the Sea Dragon, Mick Scoresby, was not happy with recombinants taking over his ship and operation, but he had no choice in the matter.

Quaritch, the remaining recombinants as well as a squad of human soldiers traveled across the islands of Metkayina reef, terrorising different Na'vi villages for information about Sully and his family. As this led to no conclusions, Quaritch decided to draw out the enemy by killing the tulkun near the reef: the Metkayina-clan had a close relationship with the creatures and would be angered if they were killed so close to home. If they delayed war, the Sullies would also come out of hiding.

The recoms witnessed Scoresby and his team killing the tulkun Roa and her newborn calf. Roa happened to be spirit-sister of Ronal, the tsahìk of the village that was hiding the Sullies. The death of Roa and her calf angered the Metkayina, who wanted to go to war with the RDA, but Jake told them they would have to warn the tulkun first about the tracking the humans could do.

Capturing the Sully Children again and fighting the Sullys and the Metkayina Clan[]

The recoms managed to capture Lo'ak and Tun, two of Jake Sully's children as well as Tsireya, the daughter of Tonowari, the clan leader of the Metkayina and held them hostage on the SeaDragon. When Jake Sully and the Metkayina arrived, Quaritch demanded over the radio for Sully to surrender himself or the children would die. Sully decided to comply, but the surrender was stopped when the Payakan, on the tulkun, attacked the SeaDragon. This led to the Metkayina to attack the RDA forces and an enormous battle erupted in the shallow seas of Pandora.

During the battle Mick Scoresby, the captain of the SeaDragon, several soldiers & SeaDragon crew as well as the recombinant versions of Ja & Lopez perished. The SeaDragon itself was also damaged by Spider Socorro and the captured Na'vi-children were rescued by Neteyam. Despite the big losses, the recoms managed to gun fatally wound Neteyam while he was evacuating the children and Tuk & Kiri was recaptured.

While the Sullys regrouped nearby to mourn the death of Neteyam, Quaritch once again demanded Jake to surrender himself for the sake of Tuk and Kiri. The recoms as well as remaining soldiers and crew regrouped as well, waiting for the the counterattack. During Sully's attack Neytiri's the Zdinarsik and Prager are killed, alongside several human soldiers, while Wainfleet and Mansk were knocked out and left to an unknown fate. The remaining humans were quickly killed by Neytiri's wrath, with Quaritch remaining. Quaritch let the children go when Neytiri threatened Spider, but told Sully he would never let them live in peace. The two began to fight while SeaDragon started to sink into the sea, both eventually losing consciousness underwater.

Aftermath[]

Both Sully and Quaritch were saved by their children: the former by Lo'ak and the latter by Spider, who dragged the recom to shore. After walking up, Quaritch begged his son to come back, but Spider returned to the Sully's. Quaritch was approached by his ikran, which he mounted and left the battlefield, likely back to Bridgehead.
