~ Reconnaissance Dalek to the 13th Doctor while possessing Lin. |
The Reconnaissance Dalek is the main antagonist in the 2019 New Years Special, Resolution and the overarching antagonist in the 2021 New Years Special, Revolution of the Daleks in Doctor Who. It is a specially recon Dalek who arrived on Earth, and tried on several occasions to take over the planet for the Dalek Empire.
Like the majority of the Daleks of the 21st century, it was voiced by Nicholas Briggs, and was physically portrayed by Charlotte Ritchie, as well as Daniel Adegboyega, and Nathan Stewart-Jarrett.
Biography[]
A day to come[]
Through the extrapolations of the Matrix, the Time War-era Time Lords foresaw the encounters with the Reconnaissance Dalek in the Doctor's personal future. Though they regarded all future events they saw as merely theoretical, it was recorded in the Dalek Combat Training Manual in a chapter for section leaders. They attributed the "remarkable" feat of the Dalek having initially been defeated by primitive humans to it being unprepared for the overwhelming opposition that it faced, anticipating that they would not be so lucky were they to encounter one. Regarding the 2021 Dalek civil war, it came much to the concern of the Time Lords that a single Dalek was able to create a whole new mutant strain of the Dalek race without the advanced skills of Davros, the Dalek Emperor or the Cult of Skaro. As such, they began research into the genetic make-up of the Reconnaissance Daleks to further understand the extent of their abilities.
Arrival on Earth[]
The Reconnaissance Daleks were among the first Daleks to leave Skaro, and it was implied that the Reconnaissance Dalek was the very first to reach Earth. Arriving in England in the 9th century, the Dalek found itself facing an army of humans who were made of different kingdoms, who had banded together to face the greater threat.
While the Dalek caused tremendous losses, the humans "only just" managed to defeat the Dalek, trapping it in netting, and burning the casing. The Dalek was split into three, but to ensure it could not return, the three pieces were given to different Custodians, who took their piece of the mutant to different parts of the globe, where them and their descendants would guard it. However, the third Custodian never made it, as he was killed by an arrow in Yorkshire.
Resolution[]
12 centuries later, on 1st January 2019, the third Custodian was dug up by archaeologists Lin and Mitch who found also the third Custodian's piece of the Dalek. The third piece of the Dalek was inadvertently revived by UV light, Meanwhile, the current Custodians on Anuta Island and in Siberia notice something strange happening with their shrines as the pieces of the Dalek were summoned and merged back together with the third piece and the bagged object in Sheffield begins to expand and writhe, revealing that the Dalek has reawakened. The complete Dalek mutant lurked in the tunnels until it is found by Lin, which the Dalek attached itself onto her back.
At her home, the Dalek informed her that she was it’s puppet. Controlling Lin, the Dalek mutant forces her to access UNIT's archives so it can learn about Earth's capabilities and fulfil its purpose.
The Reconnaissance Dalek forced Lin to drive her car at over 100 miles to where parts from it's old casing was stored. After being pulled over by the police, the Dalek killed them and took the police car as it's vehicle. As the Thirteenth Doctor tried to scan it, the Dalek interfered, proving it to be a Recon Scout to the Doctor. At MDZ Research, the Dalek killed the security guard and retrieved a Dalek gunstick. The Doctor indirectly confronted it and bought time for the TARDISs systems to be rebooted.
After arriving at a farm, and disposing of the farmer, the Dalek rebuilt it's casing from memory, and relinquished control of Lin. Within it's casing, the Reconnaissance Dalek confronted the Doctor directly, vowing to summon the Dalek fleet to Earth. After a battle with the Army, the Dalek headed for GCHQ to contact the fleet, shutting off all comms power in the UK. At GCHQ, the Doctor and her fam managed to prevent the signal being sent, using a microwave oven to destroy it's primitive casing.
However, the Dalek took over Aaron Sinclair, and demanded that the 13th Doctor and her friends to use TARDIS to take it to the Dalek fleet directly and if they refused, the Dalek will kill and destroy Aaron. However, the Dalek was tricked into being taken to a supernova, with a vacuum corridor ready to drag the mutant into space from Aaron's back. However, the Dalek was determined to take Aaron with him, until Ryan managed to save his father who fought off the Dalek's control while his son pulled him to safety, and the Dalek was sucked from the TARDIS into the supernova, being vaporized.
Revolution of the Daleks[]
Resurrection/Cloned[]
While one account held that Giles of the Preternatural Research Bureau was dispatched to pick up a broken microwave and a battered casing in Sheffield on New Year's Day,
The Recon Dalek's destroyed casing was retrieved by agents of Jack Robertson. The casing was used to create Defence Drones, Machine had very similar appearance to the metal casing created by the Reconnaissance Dalek and were predominantly black and silver in colour. The Defence Drones were adorned with blue lights, including a blue eyestalk lens, as well as a blue light within their grating sections. In addition, the Defence Drones' base units featured less sense globes than the Reconnaissance Dalek's scrap casing, as their casings had black layered panelling around the bottom of their base units.
The Defence Drones are robotic, and were designed to reflected in their weapons platforms, which featured a gunstick that shot water, and a gas emitter in place of the traditional manipulator arm. They could also emit a sound wave at a high frequency, used to irritate rioters and force them to disperse.
The Defence Drones function as assistance to police and security services, Robertson 3D printed thousands of drones over the course of a year, which were rolled out across the nation at borders and national landmarks including Great Britain.
Remnants of the Dalek, stuck in the broken and battered casing, were later collected by scientist Leo Rugazzi to create a new lifeform, unknowingly allowing a new race of Daleks to be born. Rugazzi's original new Dalek mutant was the very same Recon Scout, in mind as well as in body; the Doctor observed that "Dalek consciousness can live within the tiniest fragment of their DNA."
Conquest[]
The Dalek took control of Rugazzi's infrastructure, and made all the necessary orders and purchases to manufacture a vertical farm in Osaka, where it began cloning itself using liquidising the human workers to create them. Using ultraviolet light, the clones of the Reconnaissance Dalek all teleported into the Defence Drones. As the Dalek secretly altered the non-weaponised designs of the Defence Drones, each one is now a fully armed, they begin to kill the humans, the Dalek started invading, with intent to use Earth as a base to take over the universe. In order to stop it, the Doctor sent the Dalek's original reconnaissance signal into the Time Vortex and summoned Death Squad Daleks.
Responding to the signal, the Death Squad Daleks detected the Defence Drone Daleks on Earth and dispatched thousands of troops to investigate. On a bridge in Bristol, squads from both sides converged and the Death Squad Daleks saw them as Defence Drones claimed to be Dalek, the Death Squad Daleks incorrect them due to them having their Dalek traces merge with human DNA, although the Defence Drones insisted that they mutated to survive. The Death Squad Daleks declared the Defence Drones impure and that the Dalek Race must have purity and they needed to be exterminated. Although the Defence Drones attempted to defend themselves, they were no match for the more advanced Death Squad Daleks and were quickly exterminated.
Death[]
Teleporting aboard the Dalek saucer via spatial shift, the original Recon Scout clone insisted that it was the last remains of the Recon Scout and that it had completed the original's mission and given its life for the Dalek cause. Although the original Recon Scout clone insisted that it could be purified, the Death Squad Daleks denied its request and exterminated it with their blasters, destroying the Recon Scout once and for all.
Legacy[]
The Time Lords believed that the Reconnaissance Dalek was the first Dalek to arrive on Earth from the Daleks' timeline. Indeed, the Thirteenth Doctor recognised the reconnaissance scouts as the "first out from Skaro". After an initial campaign, the Daleks waged the first invasion of Earth in the 2150s.
Appearance[]
The Dalek itself had green skin, except for a small part of the brain visible (distinguished as being red), and was much larger than the average Dalek mutant. It also appeared to have more tentacles that were longer, and it appeared much more squid/octopus-like creature.
The original Dalek casing, as seen in an ancient scroll depicting its appearance during the Battle of Hope Valley, appeared to resemble a bronze Dalek.
The reconstructed casing that the reconnaissance scout Dalek made for itself while possessing Lin was made from scrap metal from Dinkle's farm, and spare parts of the Dalek's original casing. The final result was a rusted casing that the Thirteenth Doctor dubbed "Junkyard Chic". The base unit was similar to those of most Dalek casings, except for the two front rows of sense globes, and two at the backside, which were larger than the rest, while all of them could be pulled back to reveal extremely explosive missiles. The weapons platform was a metallic grey and appeared to have been attached by screws. The gunstick was a pipe while the manipulator arm resembled a metal claw instead of a sucker arm. The grating section, which was notably shorter than on regular Daleks, featured a pair of metal rings; part of the inner grating section would light up red when the Dalek spoke. The dome was slightly diffrent from normal Daleks' domes with dust and rust covering it, and the eyestalk was slightly different from the general eyestalk, while the vision-field while appearing blue from the outside did not alter the vision colour for the Daley inside. The luminosity dischargers appered covered by small metallic pieces.
When it was resurrected/cloned, it had the same casing as the other Defense Drone Daleks.
Abilities[]
Without any casing, The Reconnaissance Dalek can attach itself to the back of any human and control them as it’s host similar to a parasite.
With it’s casing, The Reconnaissance Dalek has weapons and the same abilities as the other Daleks.
