“ | Crown Bearer. How wonderful to finally speak. You have come far. Further than they know. Crown Bearer, judge of what is right and wrong, absolute is your word. Their duty is to follow. They offer you their loyalty and devotion. It is not enough. I can feel their SIN seep from their souls. Harvest it, gather it, USE IT. Lead them into depravity, into the stinky mud of vile repudiation. Their Sin is yours. Absolve them, exculpate them, deliver them. I gift you these tools for the task. They say that Sin is for gods to judge... do not forget that here, YOU. ARE. THEIR. GOD. Their souls are for yours to damn and save. Go. I will never be far. | „ |
~ The Red Crown's first and (so far) only words to the Lamb. |
The Red Crown is the deuteragonist of the 2022 roguelike action-adventure game Cult of the Lamb. It is an enigmatic, crown-like entity once owned by The One Who Waits. Upon the Lamb's resurrection, it was gifted to the former by The One Who Waits, granting them magical powers to carry out his will in the mortal realm.
Initially just presented as an eldritch artifact, the Sins of the Flesh update revealed that the Red Crown has a will of its own.
Personality[]
Because of how little the player interacts with it, much of the Red Crown’s personality is shrouded in mystery. From what we know however, the crown has undying loyalty to its current owner. When first speaking to the Lamb, the crown gives them immense praise, outright calling them the god of their subjects, and willingly gives them the Mating Tent, Drum Circle, and Drinkhouse upgrades for their cult. The crown also stays with the Lamb instead of returning to its original master if the Lamb rebels against him, meaning it's only loyal to whoever its current bearer is. The crown wants its owner to gain as much power and dominion as possible and bend the world to their whims, and will do everything it can to assist them.
The Red Crown also seems to have perverted tendencies, as in an animated short it hypnotizes one of the Lamb's cultists to have him strip himself.
For the most part, The Red Crown seems content in allowing itself to be used as a tool, as at the least, it is sentient as its aware of its surroundings and dodging judgmental glances.
Biography[]
The Red Crown's origins are a complete mystery. All that's known is that, sometime in the past, it was found by Narinder and used by the latter to become the God of Death.
Following Narinder's (now known as The One Who Waits) imprisonment by his siblings, the Red Crown was given to multiple people so that they could serve as vessels to The One Who Waits and fight the Bishops of the Old Faith. None of these vessels succeeded, and they all perished (with the exception of Ratau, who however didn't complete his task).
Eventually, the Red Crown was given to the Lamb, who was able to create a big cult and defeat Leshy, Heket, Kallamar and Shamura.
The One Who Waits eventually demanded to have the Red Crown returned to him so that he could sacrifice the Lamb and free himself. In the bad ending, this is exactly what happens; in the good ending, however, the Lamb keeps the Red Crown, and fights off The One Who Waits, reverting him back into a mortal.
The Red Crown continues serving the Lamb throughout their adventures, until it finally decides to speak to its master, encouraging them to empower themself with their cultists' sins.
Fashion & Flesh[]
In this animated short, the Red Crown watches (alongside the Lamb, a frog cultist and a starfish cultist) as a fox cultist tries out various outfits. Getting displeased by what it sees, the Red Crown eventually sneaks away from its owner, turning itself into a snake and entering the tent where the fox is taking all the outfits from. There, it hypnotizes him, making him strip himself, which encourages the frog and starfish to do the same. When returning to the Lamb, the latter looks at it with an angry look, but the Red Crown innocently looks away.
