Fear is this world’s only true currency, Governor. And I am a WEALTHY man.
~ Red Eye in Invincible Universe Vol 1 9.

Red Eye is a supporting antagonist in the Image Comics series Guarding the Globe and Invincible Universe, as well as a minor antagonist in the animated adaptation of Invincible. He is a member of The Order and a drug kingpin in Brazil, who has the ability to fire heat beams from his eyes after encountering an extradimensional alien.

Biography[]

Background[]

Red Eye was originally a construction worker who, during a routine dig, uncovered an open hole. There, he encountered an extradimensional alien that possessed him, becoming the source of his powers and turning him into its vessel.

Guarding the Globe[]

Red Eye and other members of The Order meetup at the organization’s underwater base for plans to spread chaos across worldwide, where he was assigned to fight Japandroid, Best Tiger and Shapesmith in Janeiro, Brazil. Five days later, he takes part in the destruction of Paris, showing The Order what they're capable of when working together. When the Guardians of the Globe arrive, Red Eye fights Outrun and Pegasus.

Invincible Universe[]

Five months earlier in Rio de Janeiro, Red Eye confronts a man named Gustavo, who has been stealing drugs and money from his cartel. Red Eye admits he admires Gustavo’s bravery, but calls him a fool for stealing from the wrong person; himself. Despite Gustavo’s pleas, Red Eye kills him with his heat vision. A prison guard nearby warns Red Eye not to overdo it, mentioning rumors of a possible extradition to the U.S. While searching the house, they find a terrified boy hiding in a closet. The guard asks if he should kill the boy, but Red Eye tells him to spare the child.

Now under Red Eye’s care, Davi lives a luxurious life inside Boitata Prison, thanks to the city officials who profit from Red Eye’s drug money. During a meeting with Slaying Mantis, Davi offers him wine while Red Eye draws comparisons between the two of them, noting that they both became orphans at a young age. Red Eye speaks to Davi in Portuguese, which makes Slaying Mantis uneasy. Slaying Mantis then asks for help, explaining that they’re both wanted for their involvement in the destruction of Paris. He reveals he has a family now, hidden in witness protection as part of his deal with Cecil Stedman to help bring Red Eye down. Suddenly, Ms. Popper teleports Gary “Wolf-Man” Hampton into the room to attack Red Eye. Gary pauses when he sees Davi, and Red Eye takes the opportunity to blast him with a heat beam, injuring him. Ms. Popper manages to escape just in time. Enraged, Red Eye tries to hit Slaying Mantis as he flees, but misses. He orders the guard, Alvarez, to find him. Meanwhile, Red Eye watches over Wolf-Man and casually offers Davi the chance to keep him: both as a pet and a prisoner.

While Best Tiger and Claire Voyant infiltrate Red Eye’s prison with Slaying Mantis, Claire screams in pain as she’s hit by a psychic attack. Best Tiger rushes to her side, and she tells him she’s sensing static energy from the area. Ahead of them stands a massive vault door. Claire points out that whatever is behind it isn’t human. Best Tiger instructs Slaying Mantis to cut through a weak spot in the structure. Slaying Mantis uses his energy blade to slice it open, and Best Tiger follows up with a powerful punch, causing the structure to collapse. Inside, the trio discover a massive, otherworldly being not from Earth.

Claire becomes possessed by the extradimensional alien. Speaking through her, the alien reveals that it once discovered a way to travel between dimensions, but its own people feared its power and sabotaged the machine it had built. As a result, it was partially fused into the Earth’s bedrock, where it remained trapped for centuries. Eventually, Red Eye, working as a construction worker, unknowingly digs the alien, creating an opening in the rock. This event not only marked the beginning of Red Eye’s villainy, but also tied his power to the alien. Red Eye became the alien’s vessel of wrath, rising through the ranks to lead his own cartel and join The Order. With every life Red Eye took, the alien absorbed energy, slowly inching closer to escaping its prison.

Back in Rio de Janeiro, riots break out across the city as the governor arrives on the scene. She observes that the crowds aren’t protesting near Red Eye’s prison. Her assistant explains that it’s because the people live in fear of him. Suddenly, Red Eye blasts open the governor’s car, believing she has betrayed him. He drags her out and declares, “Let the people decide,” leaving her fate in their hands. The crowd clearly wants both Red Eye and the governor dead, but their fear of Red Eye keeps them from acting. Red Eye mocks the situation, saying he’s rich in fear, and that fear is the only currency that matters here. Despite Davi’s efforts to stop him, Gary reveals himself and tries to intervene, but he’s too late to save the governor, who is killed by Red Eye. Twenty-one minutes later, Slaying Mantis detonates the C4. Best Tiger manages to escape, but Alvarez is crushed in the explosion. As Red Eye charges up another heat blast, his power suddenly fades after the buried monster that sustained him has been sealed off. Gary grabs him, trying to take him into custody. But the crowd finally acts, trampling over Gary and swarming Red Eye, dragging him away while shouting “Death to Red Eye” in Portuguese.

Amazon adaptation[]

In the third season’s episode “This Was Supposed To Be Easy”, he is seen alongside other members when Machine Head becomes the leader of The Order.
